Geiranger's Embrace: A Day of Awe and Wonder
Today was all about soaking in the majestic beauty of Geirangerfjord. The crisp air, the towering cliffs, and the promise of breathtaking views – it was a day tailor-made for adventure with my family. I was excited to explore more of this UNESCO World Heritage site, and share these experiences with Jana and Maximilian.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Fiskekaka Geiranger. I had heard so much about their traditional fishcakes, and I was eager to try this local delicacy. The reviews online were promising, highlighting the crispy catfish and fresh veggies. It was a small, cozy place, and the fishcake was indeed a delightful taste of Norway. Maximilian, surprisingly, loved it too, which is always a win! Jana opted for a lighter fare, but even she admitted the aroma of the fishcakes was tempting. I even bought a few extra, thinking they might make a good snack later on.

Fueled up, we headed to the Geiranger rock view point. The drive itself was stunning, with the fjord shimmering below and the mountains rising dramatically around us. It's truly a landscape that takes your breath away. The viewpoint was easily accessible, and offered several vantage points for capturing the perfect photo. Of course, I made sure to snap plenty, trying to capture the immensity of the fjord and the play of light on the water. Maximilian was fascinated by the boats dotting the fjord, imagining them as tiny toys in a giant bathtub.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
After the viewpoint, we decided to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the Geiranger-Herdalen Landskapsvernområde. This protected landscape area promised a unique fjord and mountain experience, and it certainly delivered. We took a leisurely walk, enjoying the tranquility of the mountains and the fresh, clean air. It was a welcome escape from the more crowded tourist spots. The landscape was rugged and beautiful, and I could see why UNESCO considers this area one of the most beautiful fjord landscapes on the planet.

For lunch, we stopped at Låna Bistro. The online reviews mentioned a charming restaurant with a sunny outdoor seating area, and that sounded perfect. While the bistro was indeed charming, the weather was a bit too chilly to sit outside, so we opted for a cozy table indoors. Jana and I enjoyed some traditional Norwegian fare, while Maximilian, ever the picky eater, settled for a simple but satisfying meal. I later found out that Låna Bistro was formerly known as Friaren Bistro, so it seems it has quite a history.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at Made in Fjords Horno. I was on the hunt for some authentic Norwegian souvenirs, and this place seemed to fit the bill. The shop offered a variety of locally crafted items, including leather goods made from 'Old Norwegian Short Tail Landrace'. I ended up buying a beautiful leather wallet for myself and a small wooden toy for Maximilian. Jana found a lovely hand-knitted scarf, perfect for the chilly weather. It was nice to support local artisans and bring home a piece of Norway with us.

As evening approached, we made our way to Berserk Bar & Grill for dinner. The name itself intrigued me, and I was curious to see what kind of 'rustic and genuine food experience' they offered. We shared some stories about the origin of the word Berserk. Maximilian was particularly fascinated by the idea of Viking warriors and their strength. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the food was delicious. I opted for a grilled fish dish, while Jana tried a vegetarian option. Maximilian, of course, went for the burger. We all left feeling satisfied and content.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Djupvatnet and Ørnesvingen Viewpoint. I'm particularly excited about Ørnesvingen, with its promise of stunning views of the Geirangerfjord and the Seven Sisters waterfall. We'll also have breakfast at Geiranger Brygge, lunch at Låna Restaurant & Bar, and dinner again at Geiranger Brygge. And perhaps, if time allows, we'll stop by Geiranger Bryggeri for a taste of local brew. It sounds like another day filled with adventure and breathtaking scenery. I am glad Jana and Maximilian are here with me to share these wonderful experiences in Norway.
As I sit here, reflecting on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Geirangerfjord is a truly special place, and I feel so fortunate to be able to experience its beauty with my family. It's moments like these that make all the planning and travel worthwhile. And who knows, maybe tomorrow I'll even remember to pack that raincoat I forgot!
