A Fjord's Welcome

After a long journey from Brno, with a stopover in Oslo and a connecting flight to Ålesund, we finally arrived in Geirangerfjord. The crisp, cold air hit us as we stepped out of the car, a stark contrast to the cozy warmth of our home. The adventure has begun, and I couldn't be more excited to share our experiences in this breathtaking corner of Norway with you all.

Our first day in Geirangerfjord was nothing short of spectacular, a feast for the senses that left Jana, Maximilian, and me utterly captivated. The journey itself was an adventure, flying from Brno to Oslo and then connecting to Ålesund. Maximilian, bless his heart, was a trooper, even though the travel was long. From Ålesund, we rented a car, and the drive to Geiranger was a scenic prelude to the main event. The roads wound through landscapes that looked like they were painted by the gods themselves, a mix of autumnal hues clinging on before winter fully takes hold. I did forget the raincoat, though, but I will get one tomorrow.

Our initial stop was at Flydalsjuvet. The viewpoint is easily accessible by car, which was a relief after our long day of travel. The panoramic view of Geirangerfjord took our breath away. Even in late November, the landscape held a stark beauty, the deep blue waters of the fjord contrasting against the snow-dusted peaks. Maximilian was thrilled, running around the viewing platforms, trying to capture the perfect photo with my camera. Jana and I simply stood there, soaking in the view, a silent acknowledgment of the majestic beauty surrounding us.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views come after the most challenging climbs.

Next on our list was, of course, the iconic Geirangerfjorden itself. We drove along the winding roads that hugged the fjord, stopping at several points to take in the scenery. The Seven Sisters waterfalls, though not as vigorous as in the spring, still cascaded down the cliffs, a testament to nature's enduring power. We learned that some winter cruises still operate, offering a unique, less crowded experience of the fjord. Though we didn't opt for a cruise today, it's definitely something to consider for a future visit.

To delve deeper into the region's history and culture, we visited the Norwegian Fjord Centre. The center is a wealth of information about the fjord's formation, its unique ecosystem, and the people who have called it home for centuries. Maximilian particularly enjoyed the interactive exhibits, especially the children's section where he could explore the geology of the fjords through games and displays. I found the exhibit on the local flora and fauna fascinating, learning about the resilient plants and animals that thrive in this harsh environment. Jana was captivated by the exhibits detailing the history of fjord farming and the ingenuity required to survive in such a remote location.

For lunch, we stopped at Brasserie Posten. The restaurant is housed in the old post office building, adding to its charm. The menu featured local and seasonal ingredients, with a focus on sustainability. I opted for a traditional Norwegian dish, while Jana enjoyed a fresh seafood platter. Maximilian, predictably, chose the fish and chips, which he declared were the best he'd ever had. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a perfect spot to relax and refuel after a morning of exploring.

In the afternoon, we had a delightful lunch at Westerås Restaurant. Perched high above Geiranger, the restaurant offered panoramic views of the fjord and surrounding peaks. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, blending rustic charm with modern touches. We savored local dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. Maximilian was fascinated by the farm animals, especially the sheep and goats. It was a memorable experience, combining culinary delights with breathtaking scenery. It is only open during the summer season, though.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a quick stop at Joker Geiranger. We needed to stock up on a few essentials, including snacks for Maximilian and some local delicacies to try later. It's always interesting to see what local products are available, and Joker Geiranger didn't disappoint. We picked up some local cheeses and cured meats, perfect for a late-night snack.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurant Olebuda. It was a charming spot in the pedestrian street, offering a cozy atmosphere and a diverse menu. I was looking forward to tasting some authentic Norwegian cuisine, and the restaurant didn't disappoint. The service was excellent, and the food was delicious. Maximilian enjoyed a hearty burger, while Jana and I savored traditional Norwegian dishes. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Geirangerfjord.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the incredible experiences we'd had. From the stunning views at Flydalsjuvet to the immersive exhibits at the Norwegian Fjord Centre, every moment was filled with wonder and awe. The local cuisine tantalized our taste buds, and the friendly locals made us feel welcome. Geirangerfjord had truly cast its spell on us, and we couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Seven Sisters waterfalls up close, hike to Storsæterfossen, and perhaps even try our hand at kayaking. I am especially looking forward to the kayak adventure!

Until then, good night from Geirangerfjord!
