A Day of Fjords, Falls, and Paddles

Today was nothing short of spectacular, a true immersion into the heart of Norway's Geirangerfjord. The crisp air, the majestic landscapes, and the thrill of adventure made it a day to remember. Even though the sun sets early this time of year, we packed in as much as possible, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at CaféOlé, a charming spot right in the heart of Geiranger. The café, open from 9 AM to 4 PM, was bustling with fellow travelers eager to start their day. Jana and Maximilian enjoyed freshly baked pastries, while I opted for a strong coffee to prepare for the day’s adventures. It's a cozy retreat, perfect for fueling up before exploring the majestic surroundings.

After breakfast, we set off to witness the famed Seven Sisters waterfall. As we approached, the sight was simply breathtaking. Even in November, with the water levels dependent on snow thaw and precipitation, the sisters cascaded down the cliffs with an ethereal beauty. The legend says that the Seven Sisters were all unmarried, and the waterfall on the other side of the fjord has been called The Suitor after several unsuccessful attempts to court the sisters. Maximilian was fascinated by the story, imagining the sisters dancing playfully down the mountain.

Next on our itinerary was Storsæterfossen waterfall, and the plan was to hike behind it! The drive to Westerås Farm, about 3.5 kilometers south of Geiranger, was scenic in itself. The weather in Geiranger in November is very cold with temperatures between 32°F and 37°F, so warm clothes were a must. From the farm, the hike was moderately challenging, with a steady climb. The trail was well-maintained, and even in late November, it was manageable with our hiking boots.

As we ascended, the views of Geirangerfjord became increasingly stunning. The anticipation of walking behind the waterfall kept us motivated. The final stretch involved a narrow, rocky path hugging the cliff, and soon we were standing behind the curtain of water. The sound was deafening, and the spray was incredibly refreshing. Maximilian was thrilled, feeling the power of nature up close. I managed to capture some photos, though keeping the lens dry was a challenge! The hike, about an hour each way, was well worth the effort.

After our invigorating hike, we were ready for lunch. We headed to the Grande Fjord Hotel, where we had a delightful meal at their restaurant, Hyskje. The restaurant offers modern Scandinavian style gastronomy while overlooking the beautiful Geiranger Fjord. The short-travelled food is very important for them and almost everything you find here is local produce from the area around Geiranger and made from scratch with passion. Jana and I savored the local flavors, while Maximilian enjoyed a hearty portion of traditional Norwegian fare. The panoramic views from the restaurant added to the experience, making it a perfect midday break.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that bring you closest to nature's raw power and beauty.

With the afternoon still ahead, we decided to try something completely different: kayaking on the Geirangerfjord. We chose Geiranger Adventure Kayak centre for our adventure. Despite the chilly weather, the center provided us with appropriate gear to keep us warm and dry. The fjord was serene, and paddling through the calm waters offered a unique perspective of the towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls.

Our guide led us towards the Seven Sisters waterfall, providing interesting facts about the fjord and its wildlife. Paddling through the fjord, surrounded by great mountains and roaring waterfalls, was an amazing experience. The highlight was a unique view of the Gjaerdefossen Waterfall and Eagle Bends. Maximilian was a bit hesitant at first, but he soon got the hang of it, enjoying the gentle rhythm of the paddles and the stunning scenery. The Seven Sisters waterfall is located a short paddling distance from Geiranger harbor.

As the day drew to a close, we were ready for a relaxing dinner. We opted for Naustkroa Restaurant, known for its traditional Norwegian cuisine. The cozy atmosphere was perfect for unwinding after a day filled with activities. I enjoyed a hearty portion of local fish, while Jana savored a vegetarian dish. Maximilian, of course, went for the classic Norwegian meatballs. It was a satisfying end to a perfect day.

To cap off the evening, we made a brief stop at Berserk Bar & Grill. This bar offers a rustic and genuine food experience. While Maximilian enjoyed a warm drink, Jana and I sampled some local beers. The bar was lively, with fellow travelers sharing stories of their Geiranger adventures. It was a great way to soak in the local atmosphere before heading back to our cozy accommodation.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the Geirangerfjord with my family. The combination of natural beauty, thrilling activities, and local hospitality made it a truly unforgettable day. Even in November, the fjord offers a unique charm, with fewer crowds and a serene atmosphere.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Geiranger rock view point and the Geiranger-Herdalen Landskapsvernområde. We'll start our day with breakfast at Fiskekaka Geiranger, followed by lunch at Låna Bistro. For dinner, we're considering returning to Berserk Bar & Grill, given our positive experience tonight. We also plan to visit Made in Fjords Horno for some local souvenirs.

As I write this, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Geirangerfjord has exceeded all my expectations, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. Until then, good night from Norway!
