A Day Among Medieval Marvels

Today, I was completely transported back in time as I explored the medieval heart of Arezzo. The ancient stones whispered stories of centuries past, and every corner revealed a new treasure. It was a day of architectural wonders, artistic discoveries, and culinary delights, all experienced with my wonderful family by my side.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the HOTEL RESIDENCE LE CORNIOLE. Jana had prepared a delicious spread of fresh bread, local cheeses, and strong coffee, fueling us for a day of exploration. Maximilian was particularly excited, armed with his travel journal and a brand-new set of colored pencils, ready to document every fascinating detail he encountered. As we set out, the Tuscan sun painted the rolling hills in a golden light, promising a perfect day for uncovering Arezzo's secrets.

Our first stop was the magnificent Santa Maria della Pieve. This church is one of Arezzo's most iconic symbols, and it's easy to see why.

The intricate façade, with its five-arched lower level and three levels of loggias, is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Each column and capital is unique, a testament to the skill and artistry of the medieval craftsmen. As we stood before it, I couldn't help but marvel at the history etched into every stone. Santa Maria della Pieve has stood here for centuries, witnessing countless events and transformations.

Inside, the church was equally impressive. The nave and two aisles soared upwards, creating a sense of reverence and awe. Light streamed through the mullioned windows, illuminating the ancient frescoes and sculptures. I found myself particularly drawn to the lunette above the central portal, a bas-relief depicting the Praying Madonna with Angels, signed by Marchionne. It was a beautiful example of medieval artistry and devotion. Maximilian was fascinated by the bell tower, known as the Tower of a Hundred Holes, pointing out each opening with excitement. Jana, with her librarian's eye, appreciated the architectural details and the way the church blended Romanesque and Gothic styles.

As we wandered through the church, I felt a deep connection to the past. It was a reminder that Arezzo is a city steeped in history, where every building has a story to tell. It's incredible to think that this church has been a focal point of the community for over a thousand years, a place of worship, celebration, and solace. The church is documented as early as 1008. It was the stronghold of the city's struggle against its bishops. After the bishops built the Cathedral and palace, Santa Maria della Pieve was renovated with the façade and the apse. The interior was remade in Gothic style in the 13th century.

Leaving Santa Maria della Pieve, we made our way to the Palazzo dei Priori, Arezzo's town hall. This imposing building, constructed in the 14th century, stands proudly on Piazza della Libertà, a testament to the city's power and prestige. As we approached, I was struck by the palace's grandeur. Its mighty keep, complete with Ghibelline merlons, dominated the skyline, a reminder of Arezzo's medieval past. The building has been the seat of Arezzo's government since 1333. It was built to house the supreme magistracy of the free commune and later the main jurisdictional and administrative bodies.

History is not just a collection of dates and facts; it is a living, breathing entity that shapes our present and guides our future.

Inside, the Palazzo dei Priori was a treasure trove of art and history. We explored the 16th-century courtyard, with its elegant arcade and loggias, and admired the numerous frescoes, statues, and architectural elements that adorned the walls. Maximilian was particularly fascinated by the large clock that had been moved to the tower from Santa Maria della Pieve in the 15th century. Jana, meanwhile, was captivated by the Sala dei Matrimoni, with its grand stone fireplace and frescoes by Teofilo Torri.

As we wandered through the palace, I couldn't help but reflect on the events that had unfolded within its walls. From the deliberations of the city's leaders to the celebrations of its people, the Palazzo dei Priori has been at the heart of Arezzo's history for over six centuries. It's a place where decisions have been made, laws have been enacted, and the fate of the city has been shaped. It was renovated between 1454 and 1472 by Domenico del Fattore and Bartolomeo Serragli. In 1572, Alfonso Parigi the Elder designed the three-order internal loggia facing south.

After immersing ourselves in the history of the Palazzo dei Priori, we decided to take a break for lunch. Following some online research, we opted for Il Cantuccio, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with exposed brick walls and rustic wooden tables. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by hearty bowls of ribollita and pappa al pomodoro. Maximilian, surprisingly, devoured his pappa al pomodoro, declaring it the best soup he'd ever tasted. I enjoyed a glass of Chianti Classico, savoring the rich, fruity flavors. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we continued our exploration of Arezzo, heading to the Fondazione Ivan Bruschi - Casa Museo dell'Antiquariato Ivan Bruschi. This unique museum, housed in the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, is a testament to the life and passion of Ivan Bruschi, a renowned antiquarian and the founder of Arezzo's famous antiques fair. The Ivan Bruschi Foundation was established to be a reference point for the cultural and economic sector of the town of Arezzo. Ivan Bruschi decided to make his home and collection public before his death.

As we stepped inside, we were immediately transported to another world. The museum was filled with a fascinating collection of art and antiques, ranging from ancient artifacts to Renaissance masterpieces. Each room was a treasure trove of curiosities, reflecting Bruschi's eclectic tastes and his deep appreciation for beauty and history. Maximilian was enthralled by the displays of ancient weapons and armor, while Jana was drawn to the exquisite textiles and ceramics. I was particularly impressed by the numismatic collection, which included coins and medals from various periods and cultures.

The Casa Museo dell'Antiquariato Ivan Bruschi is more than just a museum; it's a window into the soul of a man who dedicated his life to art and antiques. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the beauty of the past and discover the stories behind the objects. The Palace of the Capitano del Popolo is one of the most imposing medieval buildings in Arezzo. The museum is a place of cultural meetings, social events and the salon of the Antiques Fair, established in 1968.

After immersing ourselves in the world of Ivan Bruschi, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. We strolled along Corso Italia, Arezzo's main street, browsing the shops and soaking up the atmosphere. I was on the lookout for a special souvenir to remind me of our trip, and after some searching, I stumbled upon La Bottega del Cuoio, a leather shop. The shop was filled with the rich aroma of leather, and I was immediately drawn to the handcrafted bags, belts, and wallets. After much deliberation, I chose a beautiful leather journal, perfect for recording my travel experiences.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a final culinary experience. We chose Ristorante LaPieve, drawn in by its elegant ambiance and its proximity to the Santa Maria della Pieve church. The restaurant's location in the historic center added to its charm, and we were delighted by the rustic-chic decor and the warm, inviting atmosphere. We enjoyed a memorable dinner, savoring traditional Tuscan dishes with a modern twist. I opted for the tagliatelle al cinghiale, a hearty pasta dish with wild boar ragout, while Jana chose the grilled sea bass, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Maximilian, surprisingly adventurous, tried the panna cotta al caramello e pistacchi and loved it. The service was attentive and professional, making our dining experience truly special.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore Arezzo with my family. We had discovered so many treasures, both big and small, and had created memories that would last a lifetime. From the architectural marvels of Santa Maria della Pieve and Palazzo dei Priori to the artistic wonders of the Fondazione Ivan Bruschi, Arezzo had captivated us with its beauty and history. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visits to the Monument of Francesco Petrarca, the Passeggio del Prato, and the Gāius Cilnius Mæcēnās National Archæological Museum, I am excited to see what other secrets this charming Tuscan city has to reveal. And perhaps an evening Moscow mule cocktail.
