Day 2: Arezzo's Artistic Heartbeat: Medieval Masterpieces and Roman Echoes
Discover Arezzo's rich history through its medieval art, ancient amphitheater, and delightful Tuscan cuisine, a perfect family adventure.
Echoes of the Past in Arezzo
Today, Arezzo revealed its historical layers, a fascinating blend of medieval artistry and ancient Roman heritage. It was a day of discovery, wandering through museums and ruins, each holding a piece of this Tuscan town's captivating story. Jana, Maximilian, and I immersed ourselves in the local culture, seeking to understand and appreciate the artistic soul of Arezzo.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the HOTEL RESIDENCE LE CORNIOLE. Fortified, we set off to explore the artistic treasures of Arezzo, starting with the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art.

I was particularly excited, having read about its extensive collection, and eager to share this experience with my family. Maximilian, ever curious, was already peppering me with questions about knights and castles.
The National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art is housed in the Palazzo Bruni Ciocchi, a stunning Renaissance palace itself a work of art. As we walked through the rooms, Jana and I admired the paintings, sculptures, and artifacts that chronicled Arezzo's artistic evolution. Maximilian, surprisingly, was captivated by the medieval sculptures, especially a fierce-looking St. Michael Archangel. I found myself drawn to the works of Giorgio Vasari, a local artist whose contributions to the Renaissance were immense. The museum offered a comprehensive overview of the region's artistic legacy, and I made a mental note to delve deeper into Vasari's life and works.
Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
Leaving the museum, we headed towards San Domenico, a Gothic-style church known for housing a crucifix painted by Cimabue.

The church, with its simple yet imposing facade, exuded an atmosphere of reverence and history. Inside, the Cimabue crucifix was a sight to behold. The emotional depth conveyed in the artwork was striking, a testament to Cimabue's skill and the religious fervor of the time. Jana, with her background as a librarian, appreciated the historical context of the piece, explaining to Maximilian the significance of Cimabue's work in the evolution of Italian art. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of the crucifix, knowing that no image could truly do it justice.
After San Domenico, we ventured to the Roman Amphitheatre of Arezzo, a reminder of the town's ancient roots.

The amphitheater, though partially in ruins, still evoked a sense of its former grandeur. I imagined the gladiatorial contests and public spectacles that once took place here, a stark contrast to the peaceful atmosphere of present-day Arezzo. Maximilian, with his active imagination, was thrilled by the idea of gladiators and chariot races, running around the ruins as if he were part of the spectacle. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon, and we spent a good hour exploring the amphitheater, soaking in the history and enjoying the Tuscan sunshine.

As evening approached, our thoughts turned to dinner. Based on my research, I had a few restaurants in mind, each offering a taste of authentic Tuscan cuisine. We decided to try Osteria dei Mercanti.

The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. We started with some local appetizers, including crostini and bruschetta, followed by hearty pasta dishes. Maximilian, surprisingly adventurous, even tried a bite of my wild boar ragu. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the overall experience was delightful.
After dinner, we strolled through the streets of Arezzo, enjoying the evening ambiance. We stumbled upon La Clandestina, a cozy bar known for its cocktails.

While Jana and I enjoyed a glass of local wine, Maximilian sipped on a non-alcoholic beverage, enjoying the lively atmosphere. It was the perfect end to a day filled with art, history, and culinary delights.
As I reflect on our second day in Arezzo, I am struck by the town's ability to seamlessly blend its medieval and Roman past. The National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art, San Domenico, and the Roman Amphitheatre each offered a unique perspective on Arezzo's rich history and artistic heritage. And the delicious Tuscan cuisine, enjoyed at Osteria dei Mercanti, added another layer to our cultural immersion. It's experiences like these that make traveling with family so rewarding, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Santa Maria della Pieve, Palazzo dei Priori, and the Fondazione Ivan Bruschi - Casa Museo dell'Antiquariato Ivan Bruschi. I'm particularly looking forward to visiting the Santa Maria della Pieve with its unique architecture. And of course, sampling more of Arezzo's culinary offerings at Il Cantuccio, Buca di San Francesco and Ristorante LaPieve. We might also check out La Bottega del Cuoio, a local leather shop, for a unique souvenir.
I'm also making a mental note to replace the sunglasses I forgot to pack. The Tuscan sun is quite strong, and I definitely need them for our outdoor explorations. I’m also hoping we won’t need the umbrella I forgot, but better to be prepared.
Until tomorrow!
