Adieu, Barcelona!

As our Barcelona adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible memories we’ve made as a family. Today was all about embracing the unexpected, from wandering through a historical labyrinth to conquering the heights of Tibidabo. It’s amazing how a single day can encapsulate the essence of a trip, leaving you with a bittersweet feeling of satisfaction and longing.

Our final day began, as most of our days have, with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant H1898. Located in our hotel, it was incredibly convenient, and the quality of the food and service was consistently excellent. Maximilian was particularly fond of the pastries, and Jana enjoyed the fresh fruit selection. I appreciated the strong coffee, which prepared me for the day's adventures.

With our bellies full, we set out for our first destination: Parc del Laberint d'Horta. A bit off the beaten path, this park promised a unique experience. Getting there involved a short metro ride and a pleasant walk through a quieter part of the city. I must admit, navigating the metro still feels like a small victory each time, a testament to my improving (though still far from perfect) sense of direction.

The Parc del Laberint d'Horta is Barcelona's oldest garden, and it truly felt like stepping back in time. The park's centerpiece, of course, is the hedge maze. Maximilian was immediately excited, and we plunged into the labyrinth with enthusiasm. It was a delightful challenge, filled with dead ends and moments of disorientation. I found myself relying on my (admittedly limited) orienteering skills, while Jana and Maximilian opted for a more whimsical approach, choosing paths seemingly at random. After a few wrong turns and plenty of laughter, we finally reached the center, victorious!

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

Beyond the maze, the park offered serene gardens, sculptures, and fountains. It was a tranquil escape from the bustling city, a place to slow down and appreciate the beauty around us. We explored the neoclassical and romantic gardens, admiring the intricate landscaping and the peaceful atmosphere. Maximilian, ever the curious explorer, was fascinated by the koi pond, spending a good amount of time watching the colorful fish swim about. The park wasn't overly crowded, making it even more enjoyable. It was a welcome change from some of the more tourist-heavy spots we'd visited earlier in the trip. I'm glad we took the time to discover this hidden gem; it provided a perfect blend of fun and relaxation.

After our labyrinthine adventure, our appetites were calling, so we headed to Musiu for lunch. This Italian restaurant came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance, with a small terrace perfect for enjoying the pleasant weather. We started with the focaccia bread, which Maximilian devoured in record time. Jana and I shared a pasta dish, while Maximilian opted for a simple pizza. Everything was delicious, and the service was friendly and efficient. It was a satisfying and relaxing meal, just what we needed to recharge for the afternoon.

Our final major stop in Barcelona was Tibidabo, a mountain overlooking the city, topped with an amusement park and a church. Getting there was an adventure in itself, involving a combination of funicular and bus rides. The views along the way were stunning, offering panoramic vistas of Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea. As we ascended, the anticipation grew, and Maximilian was practically bouncing with excitement.

Tibidabo Amusement Park is one of the oldest in the world, and it had a charming, vintage feel. It wasn't as flashy or modern as some amusement parks, but that was part of its appeal. The rides were a mix of classic and quirky, and the atmosphere was festive and fun. Maximilian, of course, wanted to try everything. We rode the Ferris wheel, which offered breathtaking views of the city below. We braved the roller coaster, which was surprisingly thrilling, and we spun around on the carousel, laughing as we went. One of the unique attractions was the Avió, a replica of the first aircraft to fly from Barcelona to Madrid. It was a bit rickety, but the views were incredible, and the experience was unforgettable.

Beyond the rides, Tibidabo also boasts the Sagrat Cor church, a stunning neo-Gothic basilica that dominates the mountaintop. We took some time to admire the architecture and the intricate details of the church. The views from the top of the church were even more spectacular than from the amusement park, offering a truly panoramic perspective of Barcelona. It was a fitting place to reflect on our time in this beautiful city.

As the day wound down, we made our way back down Tibidabo, exhausted but happy. For our final dinner in Barcelona, we decided to try LABALABUSTA, a Middle Eastern restaurant known for its tapas. The restaurant had a vibrant and lively atmosphere, and the menu was filled with tempting options. We ordered a selection of tapas to share, including hummus, falafel, and various grilled meats. The food was flavorful and delicious, and the service was attentive. It was a perfect way to end our culinary journey through Barcelona.

To cap off our last night, Jana and I decided to sneak away for a quick drink at TWO SCHMUCKS, a bar known for its creative cocktails. It was a bit of a splurge, but we figured we deserved it after a long day of exploring. The bar had a hip and edgy vibe, and the bartenders were true mixologists. I ordered a Schmucks Vesper, while Jana opted for a more fruity concoction. The drinks were expertly crafted and delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and fun. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to Barcelona's vibrant nightlife.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel a sense of melancholy. Our Barcelona adventure is coming to an end, and tomorrow we'll be heading back to Brno. But I know that the memories we've made here will last a lifetime. We've explored ancient streets, marveled at architectural wonders, indulged in delicious food, and, most importantly, spent quality time together as a family. These are the moments that I cherish, the experiences that make life so rich and rewarding.

Barcelona, you've been good to us. Thank you for the sun, the sights, the flavors, and the memories. Until next time!

Tomorrow, we fly back home. It will be good to be back in Brno, but a part of me will always remain in Barcelona. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for every moment.
