Day 10: Delving Deeper into Hida's Soul: Museums, Wisdom, and Evening Reflections
Explore Hida's cultural heart: Uncover local history, crafts, and serene evenings in Shirakawa-go on a solo journey through Japan.
A Day of Discovery in Hida
Today was all about immersing myself in the local culture and history of the Hida region. As my trip nears its end, I felt a strong desire to delve deeper into the area's heritage, beyond the stunning landscapes and traditional architecture. I wanted to understand the spirit of the place, and today’s itinerary promised just that.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Arai. As usual, the spread was a delightful mix of Japanese and continental options, providing the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. I savored the last few days of this routine, knowing that back in Brno, it would be back to my usual quick coffee and a piece of toast.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to the Museum Hida. This museum is part of the larger Hida Earth Wisdom Center, a complex dedicated to showcasing the region's cultural and artistic heritage. The museum itself is a tribute to the master craftsmen of Hida, known as *Hida no Takumi*. I learned that these craftsmen were so skilled that they were historically exempt from taxation, their expertise being deemed essential to the region. It was fascinating to see the evolution of their craft over centuries, from ancient shrine and temple construction to modern furniture design. I was particularly impressed by the collection of Hida-made chairs. Apparently, Hida is the largest producer of chairs in Japan, and the museum had around 100 examples on display. What was even better, I could sit in all of them! It was a great way to experience the comfort and design firsthand.

The journey of cultural exploration is a path to understanding not just the history of a place, but also the soul of its people.
After spending a couple of hours at Museum Hida, soaking in the rich history of craftsmanship, I ventured over to the Hida Earth Wisdom Center itself. This center is more than just a museum; it’s a general-purpose facility aimed at revitalizing the Hida region. I discovered that the center hosts a variety of events, from conventions and exhibitions to concerts and conferences. There's even a restaurant and meeting rooms. The architecture of the center is quite striking, with a roof designed to mirror the Hida mountain range. Inside, I found a panorama picture of Hida that was 16 meters wide. It gave me a fantastic overview of the region's topography.

Lunch was at Kita no Sho, a charming restaurant that I had been looking forward to. I opted for a traditional Hida beef set meal, eager to taste the local delicacy once more. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, a testament to the region's culinary prowess.

In the evening, I decided to check out Koshiyama, a local bar. I was curious to experience the nightlife in Shirakawa-go and perhaps mingle with some locals. Koshiyama turned out to be a delightful spot, blending a cozy atmosphere with a touch of local charm. I enjoyed a glass of local sake, savoring the smooth taste and reflecting on the day's discoveries. The bar was filled with locals, and I managed to strike up a conversation with a few of them. They were curious about my travels and shared some interesting insights about the region's culture and traditions. It was a wonderful way to end the day, connecting with the local community and gaining a deeper appreciation for their way of life.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, the village was quiet and peaceful under the starlit sky. The traditional Gassho-style houses looked even more enchanting in the soft moonlight. I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had here in Shirakawa-go. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of discovery and self-reflection.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my trip, and I plan to make the most of it. According to the itinerary, I will be visiting Garyu Park and Gyokusenin Maru Garden. I am also planning to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Ichihi before heading back to Tokyo. I am looking forward to exploring these final destinations and capturing some lasting memories of this beautiful region. I am also planning to have breakfast at Yamamotoya, lunch at Shiraogi and my last dinner in Japan at Hakusuien.
As I prepare to leave Shirakawa-go, I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia. This village has captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and warm, welcoming people. I know that I will carry the memories of this solo adventure with me for years to come. It has been an enriching experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have explored this hidden gem of Japan. And who knows, maybe Jana and Maximilian would enjoy this place as well, I should definitely consider bringing them here next time.
It’s time to rest now, to recharge for one last day of exploration. Good night from Shirakawa-go!
P.S. I really need to remember to buy that travel adapter when I get back to Brno. It would have been so useful on this trip!
