Claire's Historical Journey to Luxor
Day 14: Farewell, Luxor: Reflections on an Egyptian Adventure
Bidding adieu to Luxor after 14 days of historical exploration, felucca rides, and vibrant cultural experiences in the heart of Egypt.
A Fond Farewell to Luxor
As my two-week adventure in Luxor draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I’ve had in this ancient city. From exploring magnificent temples to navigating the Nile on a traditional felucca, every moment has been filled with wonder and discovery. It’s hard to believe that tomorrow I’ll be heading back to Berlin, leaving behind the warm Egyptian sun and the echoes of pharaohs.
My final day began, as many others have, with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant El-Kababgy Luxor. The view of the Nile was as captivating as ever, and the fresh Egyptian flavors were the perfect way to start the day. I savored every bite of the *feteer meshaltet*, a flaky pastry that has become a personal favorite, while watching the city slowly wake up. It’s these simple moments, enjoying local cuisine and soaking in the atmosphere, that I find myself cherishing the most.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the Temple of Thoth (Qasr El-Aguz). Tucked away near Medinet Habu, this temple offered a more intimate and less crowded experience than some of the larger sites. As I wandered through the ancient structure, I couldn't help but marvel at the well-preserved carvings and vibrant colors that adorned the walls. It was fascinating to learn about Thoth, the god of wisdom and knowledge, and to imagine the rituals that once took place within these sacred walls. The temple, though smaller in scale, held a unique charm and provided a peaceful escape from the bustling city. It was a reminder that even in a place as rich in history as Luxor, there are always hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

The journey of a lifetime is not measured in miles but in moments.
After immersing myself in the temple's serene atmosphere, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at the Fair Trade Center. I always appreciate the opportunity to support local artisans and find unique, ethically sourced souvenirs. The center was a treasure trove of handcrafted goods, from beautifully embroidered textiles to intricate jewelry. I ended up purchasing a lovely cotton scarf and a set of hand-carved wooden figurines, knowing that my purchases would directly benefit the talented individuals who created them. It’s important to me that my travels contribute positively to the communities I visit, and supporting fair trade initiatives is one way I can do that. I even found a small papyrus scroll with hieroglyphics that I thought Emily might like.

For lunch, I ventured to El Tawab Restaurant & Coffee Shop, seeking a taste of local flavors in a casual setting. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and the aroma of grilled meats filled the air. I opted for a selection of *mezze*, including hummus, baba ghanoush, and falafel, accompanied by warm pita bread. The food was simple but delicious, and the lively atmosphere made for an enjoyable dining experience. It was a great opportunity to observe locals going about their day and to feel a part of the vibrant tapestry of Luxor.

As the afternoon sun began to cast long shadows, I embarked on a memorable felucca ride with Sayed felucca Luxor. Gliding along the Nile, with the gentle breeze in my hair, was the perfect way to reflect on my journey. The felucca, with its traditional sails, offered a peaceful and authentic experience, a stark contrast to the modern world. The sun began its descent, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. The ancient temples along the riverbanks were bathed in a golden light, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. It was a moment of pure magic, one that I will forever cherish.

This trip, being solo, has allowed me to reflect on many things. My career as an English teacher in Berlin has afforded me opportunities to meet people from all walks of life, each with their own unique stories and perspectives. It's a career I wouldn't trade for anything. Teaching, like travel, broadens the mind and enriches the soul. I thought of Hans-Peter back in Berlin, probably tending to his architectural models, and smiled. I knew he would be eager to hear all about my adventures. Maybe next time, I can convince him to join me. Although he isn't as much of a history buff as I am.
The felucca ride was more than just a scenic tour; it was an opportunity to connect with the timeless beauty of the Nile and to appreciate the rich history that surrounds it. As the sun dipped below the horizon, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences I’ve had and a sense of peace knowing that I had made the most of my time in Luxor.
For my final dinner, I chose King Dude II Restaurant & Bar, seeking a lively atmosphere and a mix of Egyptian and international cuisine. The restaurant was buzzing with energy, and the friendly staff made me feel welcome. I decided to try the *koshari*, a traditional Egyptian dish made with rice, lentils, pasta, and a spicy tomato sauce. It was a hearty and flavorful meal, a perfect representation of the local cuisine. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. I had explored ancient temples, sailed on the Nile, and immersed myself in the local culture. I had truly made the most of my time in Luxor.

Before heading back to the Sonesta St George Hotel Luxor, I took a leisurely stroll along the Corniche, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city at night. The air was filled with the aroma of street food, the sound of laughter, and the gentle lapping of the Nile against the shore. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a final opportunity to embrace the magic of Luxor.

As I prepare to leave this enchanting city, I am filled with a mix of emotions. I am sad to say goodbye to the warm Egyptian sun, the ancient wonders, and the friendly faces I’ve encountered along the way. But I am also filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences I’ve had and the memories I’ve created. Luxor has captured my heart, and I know that I will carry a piece of it with me wherever I go.
Tomorrow, I embark on my journey back to Berlin, eager to share my stories and photos with Hans-Peter and Emily. I know that this adventure will stay with me for a lifetime, inspiring me to continue exploring the world and seeking out new cultural experiences. Luxor, thank you for the memories. Until we meet again.
I'm already planning my next historical adventure, perhaps somewhere in Greece or Italy. The world is full of ancient wonders waiting to be discovered, and I can't wait to see what awaits me.
And so, with a final glance at the star-studded Egyptian sky, I bid adieu to Luxor, carrying with me the echoes of pharaohs and the warmth of Egyptian hospitality. Until next time, dear Luxor, you will forever hold a special place in my heart.
