A Day Among Athletes and Offerings

Today in Delphi was a beautiful blend of physical prowess and spiritual devotion. Hans-Peter and I spent the day exploring the remnants of a civilization that valued both the body and the soul, a balance I find particularly inspiring as I navigate this new chapter of my life. It's funny, isn't it? How places like this make you reflect on your own journey.

Our day began, as always, with a delightful breakfast at the Hermes Delphi Hotel. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Ancient Stadium of Delphi. The crisp December air nipped at our cheeks as we climbed the path leading to the stadium, but the stunning views of the surrounding valley were more than worth the effort.
Standing on the ancient track, I could almost hear the roar of the crowd and the thud of athletes' feet. It's remarkable how well-preserved the stadium is, a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the ancient Greeks. Hans-Peter, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the design and construction of the stadium, noting how it was built into the natural slope of the hill to maximize seating. He explained how the tiered stone seats, added in the 2nd century AD by Herodes Atticus, could accommodate around 6,500 spectators. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to witness the Pythian Games, held every four years in honor of Apollo, right here in this very spot.
The Ancient Stadium of Delphi is more than just a historical site; it's a place where the echoes of athleticism and cultural expression still resonate.

After soaking in the atmosphere of the stadium, we made our way to the Sikyonian Treasury. This site is a bit more complex, as it represents different phases of construction and dedication. The treasury was originally built to house offerings to Apollo, a testament to the wealth and power of the city-state of Sikyon. Hans-Peter and I discussed the various interpretations of the treasury's history, including the theory that it was rebuilt after the fall of the tyrant Cleisthenes.
What I found most intriguing was the story of the earlier structures that once stood on this spot: the tholos and the monopteros. The tholos, dating back to around 580 BC, was a circular building with a colonnade of Doric columns. The monopteros, built around 560 BC, featured a frieze decorated with scenes from mythology. It's amazing to think that these structures were replaced by the treasury we see today, each layer telling a different chapter of Sikyonian history.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Poseidon Workshop. It's a charming little shop that specializes in handcrafted jewelry and souvenirs. I was particularly drawn to the intricate necklaces and bracelets, each reflecting the artistry and traditions of Greek craftsmanship. Hans-Peter, on the other hand, was fascinated by the handmade chess sets. We ended up buying a beautiful silver pendant for our daughter, Emily, a small token to remind her of our adventures in Greece. I remember when she was a little girl, she was so fond of chess, perhaps I should have bought a chess set instead!

For lunch, we chose Taverna Gargadoyas, a longstanding family establishment in Delphi's Old Town. The taverna is known for its traditional Greek recipes and generous portions, and it certainly didn't disappoint. We shared a plate of grilled pork chops, giant beans in tomato sauce, and tzatziki, savoring each bite as we watched the world go by. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was hearty and delicious – exactly what we needed after a morning of exploring.

As evening approached, we made our way to PHIVOS Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We started with a selection of traditional Greek appetizers, followed by grilled lamb steaks for Hans-Peter and fresh tuna for me. The food was cooked to perfection, and we thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and attentive service. It reminded me of some of our favorite restaurants back in Berlin, cozy and comforting.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by how Delphi manages to blend its ancient past with its modern present. The echoes of athletes and worshippers still resonate in the stones of the stadium and the treasury, while the warmth of Greek hospitality shines through in the local shops and restaurants. It's a place that nourishes both the body and the soul, a perfect destination for anyone seeking a deeper connection to history and culture.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the European Cultural Centre of Delphi and the Museum of Delphic Festivals. I'm particularly interested in learning more about the modern interpretation of Delphi's cultural heritage and how it continues to inspire artists and thinkers today. We might even pop into Melopoleio for a drink in the evening, if we are not too tired.
As I sit here writing, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this remarkable place with my beloved Hans-Peter. These are the moments that make life so rich and meaningful, the memories that we will cherish for years to come. And who knows, maybe one day we'll return to Delphi with Emily and share these experiences with her, passing on our love for history and culture to the next generation. I must remember to buy her a chess set! Perhaps from the Poseidon Workshop...
