Whispers of the Ancients

Today, Hans-Peter and I embarked on an adventure that felt like stepping back in time, a pilgrimage into the heart of ancient Greece. It wasn't just about seeing historical sites; it was about feeling the echoes of the past resonate within the present. Delphi has a way of doing that, of making you feel connected to the millennia that have unfolded on this very soil.

Our day began, as most do here at the Hermes Delphi Hotel, with a delightful breakfast at the hotel restaurant. There's a certain charm to starting the day with a view of the rolling hills, a quiet anticipation of the day's discoveries brewing with every sip of coffee. Fuelled and ready, we set off to explore one of Delphi's most intriguing sites: the Corycian Cave.

The drive to the cave was an experience in itself. The winding roads snaked through the mountains, each turn revealing breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. As we ascended Mount Parnassus, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and earth. I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence, knowing that this mountain was once considered sacred, second only to Olympus in the ancient world. Mythology says that Deukalion and Pyrrha landed their ark on its peak during the deluge.

Reaching the Corycian Cave felt like arriving at a hidden sanctuary. The entrance, tucked away on the mountain's southern slopes, was unassuming, almost secretive. As we stepped inside, a cool, damp air enveloped us, a stark contrast to the bright sunlight outside. The cave's interior was vast, with stalactites and stalagmites creating an otherworldly landscape. It was easy to imagine the Corycian nymphs, the mythological nature spirits, making their home here.

Exploring the cave, I couldn't help but reflect on its history. This place has been sacred since the Neolithic era, a refuge and a place of worship for centuries. During the Persian attack in 480 B.C., the locals sought shelter here, its narrow entrance easily evading invaders. The cave is composed of two central caverns with a narrow tunnel that extends deep into the mountain. The first chamber measures roughly 90 by 60 meters, with a height of about 50 meters.

The echoes of ancient footsteps and whispered prayers seemed to linger in the air, a reminder of the enduring power of belief and the human connection to the sacred.

After our subterranean adventure, we were ready for a hearty lunch. We drove back towards Delphi and stopped at Tavern DION, a charming spot known for its traditional Greek cuisine. We savored classic dishes like moussaka and lamb chops, each bite bursting with flavor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the staff friendly and attentive. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning exploration.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in a bit of modern Delphi. We strolled through the town, soaking in the sights and sounds of contemporary Greek life. The shops were filled with local crafts and souvenirs, tempting us with their vibrant colors and intricate designs. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, a memento of our time here.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we found ourselves drawn to Agora Cafe. This modern cafe boasts a large porch with an expansive view, offering a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. We settled into comfortable chairs, ordered a couple of cocktails, and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of orange, pink, and purple. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect end to a day filled with history, adventure, and culinary delights.

For dinner, we ventured to Iniohos Taverna, a local favorite known for its authentic Greek dishes. The taverna was bustling with locals and tourists alike, the air filled with laughter and lively conversation. We ordered a selection of mezes, small plates of traditional Greek appetizers, and shared them family-style. Each dish was a burst of flavor, a testament to the simple yet delicious ingredients of Greek cuisine.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Delphi is more than just an archaeological site; it's a living, breathing town with a rich history and a vibrant culture. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, where ancient ruins stand alongside modern cafes, where the echoes of the oracle mingle with the laughter of locals.

Tomorrow, we plan to continue our exploration of Delphi, visiting the Ancient Stadium and the Sikyonian Treasury. We'll also be sure to stop by Poseidon Workshop, a local shop known for its unique crafts and souvenirs. I'm particularly excited to see the Ancient Stadium, where athletes once competed in the Pythian Games, second in prestige to the Olympic Games.

Before heading back to the hotel, we took a final stroll through the town, the air now cool and still. The stars twinkled above, casting a magical glow on the ancient ruins. It was a moment of profound peace, a feeling of being connected to something larger than ourselves. As we walked, Hans-Peter and I talked about the day's adventures, sharing our favorite moments and reflecting on the incredible history of this place. Back at the Hermes Delphi Hotel, I journaled about the day and started to plan out our adventures for the following day. I think I'll need to remember to buy sunscreen tomorrow, as I forgot to pack it and the sun can be quite strong, even in December. What a wonderful adventure!

I am so glad that we decided to come to Delphi for our 11-day trip. It has been so fulfilling to explore the culture and history of this remarkable location. I am also glad to have Hans-Peter by my side, as always. He is such a wonderful travel companion. I am already looking forward to our next adventure together!

Thinking about our daughter Emily, I know she would love exploring the Corycian Cave. She has always been fascinated by mythology and ancient history. Perhaps we can plan a trip together sometime soon. I know Hans-Peter would enjoy that as well. It's important to cherish these moments and share them with loved ones.

Until tomorrow, auf wiedersehen!
