A Day Amongst Champions and Treasures

Today was a day of ascending to new heights, both literally and figuratively, as Hans-Peter and I delved deeper into the heart of Delphi. It's remarkable how this ancient site continues to reveal its secrets, layer by layer, with each step we take. From the thrill of imagining roaring crowds at the stadium to the quiet reverence inspired by the Athenian Treasury, Delphi has a way of making you feel connected to the past.

Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at the Amalia Hotel Delphi. Fuelled by strong coffee and a selection of pastries, we set off to conquer the Ancient Stadium of Delphi.

The walk itself was invigorating, a winding path leading us higher and higher above the sanctuary of Apollo. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers – a welcome contrast to the bustling streets of Berlin.

As we approached the stadium, its grandeur slowly unfolded before us. Built into the natural slope of the mountain, it’s a truly impressive sight. I could almost hear the echoes of cheering crowds and the pounding of feet on the track. Hans-Peter, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the structural design, noting how the north side was carved directly into the rock while the south side was supported by a walled terrace. It's ingenious, really, a testament to the ancient Greeks' understanding of engineering and their deep connection to the landscape.

The Ancient Stadium of Delphi, perched high above the sanctuary, offered a tangible link to the athletic spirit of the Pythian Games.

We climbed the stone steps, imagining the athletes who had competed here centuries ago. The stadium, dating back to the 5th century BC, was later renovated in the 2nd century AD by Herodes Atticus, a wealthy Athenian who added the stone seating and the monumental arched entrance. It’s quite something to stand on the same ground where these ancient games took place, feeling a sense of continuity with the past. I pictured the runners, their determination etched on their faces, the chariots thundering around the track, the victors crowned with laurel wreaths. It was a powerful experience, connecting us to the human spirit of competition and the pursuit of excellence.

To truly understand a place, you must walk in the footsteps of those who came before you.

After spending a good part of the morning at the stadium, soaking in the atmosphere and taking countless photos, we made our way back down towards the sanctuary of Apollo, our next destination being the Athenian Treasury.

This was a building constructed by the Athenians to house votive offerings made by their city and citizens to Apollo. As we approached, its elegant Doric architecture stood out against the backdrop of the Delphic landscape. Built of Parian marble, it gleamed in the sunlight, a testament to the wealth and power of ancient Athens.

The Athenian Treasury is located along the Sacred Way, the path that leads to the Temple of Apollo. It’s impossible not to be moved by the history that permeates this place. The treasury was built around 490 BC, likely to commemorate the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon. Hans-Peter pointed out the intricate friezes that once adorned the building, depicting scenes from the lives of Hercules and Theseus. These sculptures, now housed in the Delphi Archaeological Museum, would have been a powerful statement of Athenian identity and their place within the Greek world.

Standing before the Athenian Treasury, I was struck by the thought of all the treasures it once held – spoils of war, dedications to the gods, and symbols of Athenian pride. It served not only as a place to safeguard these items but also as a statement of Athens' power and influence. It was a way for the Athenians to display their civic pride and prosperity to the other city-states and to show the gods that they deserved their favor. It’s fascinating to consider how these ancient societies used architecture and art to communicate their values and aspirations.

For lunch, we ventured to Tavern DION, a local restaurant known for its traditional Greek cuisine.

It was a delightful experience. I opted for the moussaka, while Hans-Peter enjoyed the pork souvlaki. The portions were generous, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The owner even surprised us with a complimentary dessert of baklava and homemade yogurt – a perfect ending to a satisfying meal. It’s these small gestures of hospitality that make traveling so rewarding.

After lunch, we strolled through the streets of Delphi, eventually finding ourselves at Michailou, a charming shop that sells locally crafted goods.

I was on the hunt for a special souvenir to remind me of our time here, and Michailou didn't disappoint. The store was filled with beautiful ceramics, textiles, and jewelry, each piece reflecting the rich culture and history of Greece. I finally settled on a hand-painted plate depicting a scene from ancient Delphi – a perfect memento of our journey.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Taverna Gargadoyas for dinner.

This family-run eatery is tucked away from the main tourist area, offering a more authentic and intimate dining experience. We shared a selection of traditional Greek dishes, including gyros, lamb chops, and a fresh Greek salad. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Castalia Spring and the Corycian Cave. I'm particularly excited about the Corycian Cave, as it's said to have been a sacred place dedicated to the nymphs and Pan. It’s a bit of a hike to get there, but I have a feeling it will be well worth the effort. We might even stop by the Miami Lounge Bar for a drink in the evening.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this ancient and beautiful place with my beloved Hans-Peter. Delphi has a way of transporting you back in time, allowing you to connect with the past in a profound and meaningful way. It’s a journey of discovery, not just of ancient history but also of the human spirit.

I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.

Good night from Delphi!

P.S. I almost forgot to mention – I realized today that I had forgotten my universal power adapter! Luckily, Hans-Peter had packed his, so we were able to charge our devices. A minor crisis averted! And I really could have used my reusable water bottle today during our hike. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
