Nature's Embrace and City Views
Today was a delightful blend of natural beauty and stunning vistas here in Urbino. After several days immersed in the architecture and history of this Renaissance city, Hans-Peter and I decided to explore a different side of Urbino, one that offered tranquility and a fresh perspective. It was a day filled with the simple joys of discovering hidden gems and appreciating the picturesque landscapes that surround this enchanting place.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bar Victoria. I must admit, their cappuccino has become a morning ritual I look forward to each day. With pastries in hand, we set off towards the Botanical Garden of the University, a place I was particularly excited to visit. As someone who finds solace and inspiration in gardens, I was eager to see what this hidden oasis had to offer. I remember when Emily was little, we had a small garden in our backyard in Inverness, and those moments tending to the plants were some of the most peaceful I can recall.
The Botanical Garden, known as Orto Botanico Pierina Scaramella, is a charming green space maintained by the University of Urbino. For a mere euro, one can enter this tranquil retreat. Established in 1806, the garden is divided into three terraces along the hillside where Urbino sits. The first terrace, the Hortus simplicium, was renovated in the early 1900s and features a small pond with aquatic plants. It’s a serene spot, perfect for a moment of reflection. I was particularly fascinated by the medicinal plants cultivated here, arranged in flower beds bordered by boxwood, each grouped according to their properties. It was like stepping back in time to when these gardens were essential for studying the healing properties of plants. Hans-Peter, ever the architect, was captivated by the design and layout of the garden, noting how cleverly it was integrated into the natural slope of the land.

The true beauty of Urbino lies not only in its architectural wonders but also in its ability to harmonize art and nature.
As we strolled through the garden, we admired the various trees, including the holm oak, maple, ailanthus, cypress, and ash. The garden also boasts a greenhouse, built in 1813, which houses plants that cannot withstand the winter cold. It's amazing to think that this garden, which started with 2,731 species back in 1812, continues to be a place of learning and beauty. I felt a sense of peace wandering through the pathways, a welcome respite from the bustling city. It reminded me of the botanical gardens back in Berlin, though on a smaller, more intimate scale. It’s these little pockets of nature that make a place feel like home, no matter where you are.
After our rejuvenating visit to the Botanical Garden, we decided to head to the Urbino viewpoint. The climb was a bit steep, but the reward was well worth the effort. As we ascended, the terracotta rooftops and winding streets of Urbino gradually unfolded beneath us. From this vantage point, the city looked like a painting, with the Ducal Palace standing proudly amidst the sea of red tiles. The rolling hills of the Marche region stretched out into the distance, creating a breathtaking panorama. The air was fresh and crisp, and the sun cast a golden glow over the landscape. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why we love to travel and explore new places. Hans-Peter, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the various landmarks, sharing his knowledge of the city's history and architecture. He’s always been my personal tour guide, adding depth and context to our adventures.

Before lunch, we popped into Ceramiche Artistiche Urbino, a charming shop that embodies the artistic spirit of Italy. I was immediately drawn to the beautifully crafted ceramics, each piece telling a story of Urbino's rich artistic heritage. The shop was filled with colorful plates, vases, and decorative items, all meticulously hand-painted with traditional designs. It was hard to resist buying something, but I managed to restrain myself, knowing that we still had several days of travel ahead. However, I did make a mental note to return later in the week for a special souvenir. Perhaps a small, hand-painted bowl to remind me of our time in this enchanting city.

For lunch, we indulged in a delightful meal at La Trattoria del Leone' di Lucarini Mauro. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic ambiance, and the aroma of traditional Italian cuisine filled the air. We ordered a selection of local specialties, including handmade pasta with truffle sauce and grilled vegetables. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true taste of the Marche region. As we savored each bite, we watched locals and tourists alike mingling and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge after our morning adventures. I even tried my hand at ordering in Italian, much to the amusement of Hans-Peter, who always encourages me to practice my language skills.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through the city, soaking in the sights and sounds of Urbino. We wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the Renaissance architecture and the charming details that make this city so unique. We passed by the house of Raphael, a reminder of Urbino's artistic legacy. The city was alive with activity, students chatting, artisans working in their shops, and tourists snapping photos. It was a vibrant tapestry of daily life, a glimpse into the heart and soul of Urbino.
Dinner at Portanova Ristorante in Urbino was the perfect end to a perfect day. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a range of traditional Italian dishes. We started with a selection of antipasti, followed by fresh seafood and homemade pasta. The food was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. As we dined, we reflected on our day, appreciating the beauty and tranquility we had found in Urbino's natural spaces. It was a day that reminded us of the importance of slowing down, taking in the scenery, and savoring the simple pleasures of life. I felt grateful for these moments, for the opportunity to explore new places with my beloved Hans-Peter, and for the memories we were creating together.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Parco della Resistenza and the Teatro Comunale D. Bramante. I am particularly looking forward to the park, as I have heard it offers more stunning views of the city. And perhaps, if we have time, we'll treat ourselves to a drink at MaiSenza Lounge Bar. Until then, I’ll cherish the memories of today, a day of botanical beauty and panoramic perfection.
As I sit here in our cozy hotel room, penning these thoughts, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Urbino has a way of capturing your heart, of drawing you in with its charm and beauty.
