Day 7: A Day of Serenity and History in Urbino
Explore Urbino's serene Chiesa di San Bernardino and the historic Fortezza Albornoz, embracing the city's rich culture and panoramic views.
Whispers of History and Panoramic Views
Today, Urbino revealed another layer of its captivating charm. Hans-Peter and I set out to explore two significant landmarks, each offering a unique perspective on this Renaissance city. From the tranquil Chiesa di San Bernardino, a stunning Renaissance church in Urbino, Italy, showcasing exquisite art and historical significance, to the commanding Fortezza Albornoz, a Renaissance fortress in Urbino, Italy, surrounded by beautiful parkland, it was a day filled with historical insights and breathtaking vistas.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Bar Canasta, a cozy bar offering a delightful selection of beverages in a friendly atmosphere. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for a day of exploration. Sipping my cappuccino, I couldn't help but feel grateful for these moments of tranquility amidst our travels. Hans-Peter, ever the early bird, was already sketching in his notebook, capturing the quaint atmosphere of the café. I made a mental note to try and find a similar café back in Berlin; it would be lovely to have a little piece of Urbino with us when we return.
With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to the Chiesa di San Bernardino. The church is located a short drive from the city center, nestled amidst rolling hills that offered a stunning approach. As we walked through the doors, a sense of calm washed over me. The interior, bathed in soft light, was adorned with beautiful frescoes and intricate altars. The architecture was a beautiful example of Renaissance design, simple but elegant.

I was particularly moved by the peaceful atmosphere of the church. It felt like a sanctuary, far removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Hans-Peter, with his architect's eye, was fascinated by the structure and design of the building. He spent a good amount of time examining the details, occasionally whispering observations about the use of light and space. I found myself reflecting on the history of the church, imagining the countless prayers and moments of contemplation that had taken place within its walls over the centuries.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places.
After soaking in the serenity of Chiesa di San Bernardino, our next destination was the Fortezza Albornoz. Perched atop the highest point of Monte di San Sergio, the fortress offered panoramic views of Urbino and the surrounding countryside. The climb was a bit steep, but the reward was well worth the effort. As we reached the top, we were greeted by a vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The rolling hills, dotted with charming villages and verdant fields, created a tapestry of breathtaking beauty.

The fortress itself is a testament to Urbino's rich history. Built in the second half of the 14th century, it served as a defensive structure, protecting the city from invaders. Over the centuries, it underwent several destructions and reconstructions, each leaving its mark on the fortress's architecture. Today, it houses the Bella Gerit Museum, which showcases archaeological finds and war equipment from the 14th to 16th centuries.
Exploring the Fortezza Albornoz felt like stepping back in time. I could almost hear the echoes of soldiers marching along the ramparts and the clang of swords in battle. Hans-Peter, always keen to learn more about military history, was engrossed in the museum's exhibits. He spent a considerable amount of time examining the reproductions of firearms and reading about the fortress's strategic importance.
As we stood on the fortress walls, gazing out at the stunning landscape, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. Urbino, with its rich history and artistic heritage, had truly captured my heart. It was a privilege to experience this city's beauty and to learn about its fascinating past. I thought back to our daughter Emily, and imagined her sketching these views as part of her art degree. She would have loved this.
For lunch, we decided on Ristorante Il Castello. Tucked away on a side street near the Ducal Palace, this traditional Italian restaurant exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere. We were seated in the garden, surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle murmur of other diners. The menu featured a variety of local specialties, and we opted for the fresh tartufo dishes, eager to savor the unique flavors of the region. The pasta was cooked to perfection, and the tartufo added a rich, earthy note that was simply divine. Hans-Peter, never one to shy away from a hearty meal, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He declared it one of the best lunches he had had in a long time.

In the evening, we ventured out to Ristorante Pizzeria Locanda Del Blasone for dinner. The restaurant, recommended by a local we met earlier in the day, promised an authentic taste of Urbino cuisine. We were not disappointed. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the menu featured a variety of traditional dishes. I opted for the passatelli with porcini mushrooms and truffle oil, while Hans-Peter chose the tagliata al sale grosso with rosemary. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and the portions were generous. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

After dinner, we strolled over to Art Café Urbino for a nightcap. The bar, known for its creative cocktails and relaxed ambiance, was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. We settled into a comfortable corner, ordered a couple of drinks, and reflected on our experiences. The day had been a whirlwind of history, culture, and culinary delights, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share it with Hans-Peter.

As we sipped our drinks, we discussed our plans for tomorrow. According to the itinerary, we'll be visiting the Scalinata del pozzo della polenta and the Museo Lapidario. I'm particularly excited about the Scalinata; I've seen pictures of it, and it looks absolutely stunning. The Museo Lapidario, with its collection of ancient stones and inscriptions, should offer another fascinating glimpse into Urbino's past. We also plan to visit Rosita's, a local shop known for its unique crafts and souvenirs. It will be a good opportunity to pick up a few gifts for our friends and family back home.
