Day 4: Lost in the Cradle of Gold

Today was nothing short of magical as we fully immersed ourselves in the wonders of Choquequirao exploring. After days of trekking, the 'Cradle of Gold' finally revealed its secrets, leaving me in awe of the Inca civilization's ingenuity and resilience. The crisp mountain air, combined with the stunning views, made every moment feel like a dream. I was excited to explore every nook and cranny of this ancient city, eager to uncover its mysteries and connect with its rich history.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kusikuy Restaurante. What a delightful way to fuel up for a day of exploration! I opted for the traditional Peruvian breakfast of eggs, fresh bread, and a strong cup of coffee. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it the perfect start to our adventure. It reminded me of the comforting breakfasts James makes back home in Toronto, though this one had a distinct Peruvian flair.

With renewed energy, we set off to explore the extensive ruins of Choquequirao. Known as the 'sister city of Machu Picchu', Choquequirao is believed to have been an important administrative and ceremonial center of the Incas, built in the 15th century. Its strategic location high in the mountains allowed it to control trade routes between the Cusco region and the jungle. The site sprawls across 6 square kilometers, though only about 30% has been excavated, making it a truly adventurous experience.

Wandering through the terraces, temples, and plazas, I couldn't help but marvel at the Incas' architectural prowess. The precision with which they constructed these structures, using locally sourced limestone and granite, is simply astounding. Daiva and I explored the ceremonial center, which was once reserved for the elite, accessed through a single, tightly controlled doorway. I could almost picture the ancient rituals that took place here, centered around the solstices and the flow of ceremonial water through the stone channels.

One of the highlights was seeing the famous llama terraces, where 24 white llamas are carved from stone on the side of the mountain. These unique features added a whimsical touch to the already breathtaking scenery. The views overlooking the Apurimac River were simply spectacular, stretching as far as the eye could see. I took countless photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the landscape, but no image could truly do it justice.

To walk through Choquequirao is to step back in time, connecting with the ingenuity and spirit of the Inca civilization.
We spent hours exploring different sectors of the city, including the residences, warehouses, and farming terraces. It's incredible to think that this city was built around the same time as Machu Picchu, serving as a vital link between Cusco and the Amazon jungle. Some believe it was designed as an agricultural hub for the cultivation and distribution of coca leaves, a sacred plant to the Incas.

For lunch, we stopped at Chull's - Peruvian Cuisine & Craft Beer, a delightful spot that offered a taste of modern Peruvian gastronomy. I decided to try the aji de gallina, a creamy chicken stew that was absolutely divine. It paired perfectly with one of their local craft beers, adding a refreshing touch to the meal. The friendly service and cozy atmosphere made it a memorable dining experience.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of Choquequirao, venturing into some of the less-visited areas of the site. It felt like we were discovering hidden gems around every corner, each with its own unique story to tell. I imagined what life must have been like for the people who once inhabited this city, their daily routines, their hopes, and their dreams. It was a humbling experience, connecting with the past in such a profound way.

In the late afternoon, we made a stop at Artesanias Maki, a charming little shop that showcases the work of artisans from all over Peru. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant textiles and intricate handicrafts, each piece reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the country. I picked up a few souvenirs for Eglė, knowing she would appreciate the unique artistry and craftsmanship.

As the day drew to a close, we gathered for dinner at Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz. The restaurant is known for its unique Franco-Peruvian cuisine and cozy atmosphere. I opted for one of the vegan options clearly labeled on the menu, a delicious rocoto potato pie. The over-the-top decor and vibrant atmosphere made it a fun and memorable dining experience.

After dinner, as we sat around the campfire, sharing stories and reflecting on the day's adventures, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Choquequirao had exceeded all my expectations, offering a glimpse into the past and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the world. The weather in September is ideal for trekking, with minimal rainfall and clear skies. The moderate temperatures during the day and cool nights made for comfortable hiking conditions.

Tomorrow, we plan to hike Cerro Choquequirao, hoping to get a panoramic view of the entire complex. I am also looking forward to visiting Taywa for breakfast, SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT for lunch and Inka Wasi Restaurant Cusco for dinner. I am also keen to unwind at LIMBUS RESTOBAR. This trek has been an amazing experience, and I am excited for what tomorrow will bring.
