Echoes of the Past

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Cusco's history and culture. I wanted to understand the stories behind these ancient stones, to feel the pulse of the Inca civilization, and to witness how their legacy continues to shape the city today. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and a profound connection to the past.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at El Tupay Restaurant. The elegant setting, reminiscent of a bygone era, was the perfect start to a day dedicated to history and culture. I savored a traditional Peruvian breakfast, fueling up for a day of exploration. The vaults and original paintings gave the room an old-fashioned feel. It was a delightful, high-end, gourmet dining experience. It was a perfect way to start my Sunday before heading out to explore the Inka Museum.

The Inka Museum was my first stop, and it was truly captivating. Housed in the Admiral's House, a beautifully restored colonial building built upon Inca foundations, the museum offered a comprehensive overview of Inca history and culture. The Casa del Almirante (Admiral's House) was built in the early 17th Century on Inca foundations. I was particularly fascinated by the displays of mummies, intricate metalwork, and pottery. Each artifact told a story, painting a vivid picture of life in the Inca Empire. The museum is an interesting one and allows the visitor a good insight into how the Inca lived, worked the land and survived and adapted with the Spanish invasion.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

After immersing myself in Inca history, I ventured to the Museo de Arte Precolombino, known as MAP. This museum offered a different perspective, showcasing pre-Columbian art from various cultures across Peru. The displays were thoughtfully curated, highlighting the artistic achievements of these ancient civilizations. The building itself was a work of art, with its beautiful colonial architecture and tranquil courtyard. I found myself particularly drawn to the ceramics and textiles, marveling at the skill and artistry of the ancient artisans. The Museo de Arte Precolombino is known as MAP, where art and pre-Colombian culture merge seamlessly.

Next on my itinerary was a stroll down Calle Loreto, a narrow street lined with perfectly preserved Inca walls. As I walked along this historic street, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the ingenuity and precision of Inca stonemasonry. The walls, part of the ancient Amaru Cancha, the palace of the Inca Huayna Capac, stood as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Inca civilization. Calle Loreto is known as Intikijllu which means Alley of the Sun. The street serves as an example of how the Inca urbanism was arranged by means of large courts limited by stone walls.

For lunch, I decided to try Yaku Restaurant, drawn in by its promise of authentic Peruvian cuisine using organic and local ingredients. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. I savored every bite, appreciating the fresh flavors and the artful presentation. The restaurant emphasized using organic and local products from their farm in the Sacred Valley. I ordered the local trout and it was amazing. The presentation is absolutely beautiful!! Every plate looked like like an art piece!

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping. I visited TEXTILES POMATAYLLA, a charming shop that showcases traditional Andean textiles. I was captivated by the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of the weavings. Talking with the shop owner, I learned about the history and significance of these textiles, each telling a unique story of the Andean people. I ended up purchasing a beautiful handwoven scarf as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of my time in Cusco. The lady from the shop provided us with great customer service, explained and helped us so much. Everything you can find in this shop is hand made and beautiful.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Marcelo Batata Restaurante for dinner. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with a blend of friendly, upscale, and romantic. I enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Peruvian dishes, savoring the flavors of the Andes. The rooftop terrace offered stunning views of the city, providing the perfect backdrop for a memorable evening. Reflecting on the day, I feel a deeper connection to Cusco and its rich heritage. I am also looking forward to tomorrow, when I will visit Pisac and Tipón Archaeological Park. The blend of history, culture, and culinary delights has been truly enriching. As I prepare for the next leg of my solo journey, I carry with me the echoes of the past, inspiring me to continue exploring and discovering the wonders of this ancient land.

Before heading back to the Sonesta Hotel Cusco, I took a moment to appreciate the lively atmosphere of Cusco on a Sunday evening. The city was buzzing with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the vibrant energy of the city. There were some festivities going on in the Plaza de Armas, with music and dancing filling the air. It was a perfect end to a day of discovery, a reminder that Cusco is a city that truly comes alive.

As I prepare for my adventures tomorrow, I am thinking about how lucky I am to be experiencing all of this. I am also grateful that James and Eglė are supportive of my solo adventure, even though I miss them terribly. I know they are eager to hear all about my experiences when I return to Toronto, and I cannot wait to share my stories with them.

I'm especially excited about visiting Pisac tomorrow, as I've heard so much about its vibrant market and stunning Inca ruins. The colorful stalls brimming with local crafts and produce sound like a feast for the senses, and I'm eager to haggle for some unique souvenirs. And of course, exploring the Pisac ruins, perched high on a mountain overlooking the valley, promises to be an unforgettable experience. I'm also intrigued by Tipón Archaeological Park, with its impressive system of aqueducts and terraces. It's fascinating to imagine how the Incas were able to engineer such sophisticated water management systems so long ago. I plan to have dinner at Organika Restaurant.

I am making memories that will last a lifetime.
