Saying Goodbye to Cusco
My final day in Cusco arrived with a mix of emotions. While I was eager to return to James and Eglė in Toronto, a part of me wished I could linger longer in this captivating city. Cusco had woven its spell, and I knew I’d carry its vibrant spirit with me. Today was all about soaking in the last drops of its beauty and culture.
I started my day with a delightful breakfast at Ofrenda Peruvian Healthy Food. After reading so many glowing reviews, I had to experience it myself, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The cozy atmosphere and the healthy, flavorful options were the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, complete with fresh juice and local bread. It was a delicious and nourishing start, setting the tone for a day of mindful appreciation.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way to the San Blas neighborhood. Known as the artisan district, San Blas is a charming maze of narrow cobblestone streets, white-washed buildings, and vibrant blue doors and balconies. The climb was a bit challenging, especially with the altitude, but the views along the way were more than worth it. Every corner revealed a new perspective of the city, with red-tiled roofs cascading down the hillside and the majestic Andes Mountains in the distance.
Reaching the San Blas View Point was like stepping into a postcard. The panoramic vista of Cusco spread out before me was breathtaking. I spent a long time there, simply absorbing the beauty and reflecting on my journey. The crisp mountain air, the warmth of the sun, and the stunning scenery created a moment of perfect serenity. I took several photos, hoping to capture the essence of this magical place, but I knew that the true experience would forever remain etched in my memory.

Afterward, I wandered through the artisan shops, admiring the intricate textiles, ceramics, and jewelry. San Blas is a treasure trove of unique gifts, and I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs for James and Eglė. I found a beautiful hand-woven scarf for Eglė, its vibrant colors reflecting her youthful spirit, and a small, intricately carved wooden box for James, perfect for storing his collection of small trinkets. Supporting local artisans felt good, knowing that I was contributing to the preservation of traditional crafts.
My next stop was the Coca Museum, a fascinating place that offered a comprehensive look at the history and cultural significance of the coca leaf in Peru. I learned about its traditional uses in Andean society, from sacred rituals to its role in combating altitude sickness. The museum also addressed the controversies surrounding coca and its connection to cocaine production, providing a balanced and informative perspective. It was eye-opening to understand the complex relationship between the coca leaf and Peruvian culture.

For lunch, I decided to try Carpe Diem Cucina Italiana, a charming Italian restaurant that had caught my eye earlier in the week. I was in the mood for something different, and the aroma of freshly baked pizza wafting from the entrance was irresistible. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with vintage posters and rustic décor that transported me to a small Italian trattoria. I ordered a simple margherita pizza, and it was absolutely delicious. The crust was thin and crispy, the sauce was tangy and flavorful, and the mozzarella was perfectly melted. It was a delightful culinary escape in the heart of Cusco.

In the afternoon, I dedicated some time to souvenir shopping at Souvenirs Cusco. I wanted to find a few more mementos to remind me of my trip, and this shop had a great selection of unique and affordable items. I picked up a colorful tapestry depicting scenes from Inca mythology, a set of hand-painted ceramic magnets, and a bag of coca tea to share with my friends back home. Bargaining with the vendors was a fun experience, and I managed to snag a few good deals.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to a final Peruvian dinner at Narguila restaurant Cusco. I had heard great things about their traditional dishes, and I was eager to sample some authentic flavors before leaving. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, with soft lighting and traditional Andean music playing in the background. I ordered a classic lomo saltado, a savory stir-fry of beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, and it was absolutely divine. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the sauce was rich and satisfying. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey in Cusco.

Reflecting on my time in Cusco, I realized how much this solo trip had meant to me. It was an opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone, to immerse myself in a new culture, and to discover a different side of myself. I felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the experiences I had, the people I met, and the lessons I learned. Cusco had challenged me, inspired me, and changed me in ways I couldn't have imagined.
As I packed my bags at the Sonesta Hotel Cusco, I felt a pang of sadness, but also a sense of excitement about returning home to James and Eglė. I knew that I would carry the memories of Cusco with me always, and I couldn't wait to share my stories and photos with my family.

Tomorrow, I will be heading to the airport for my flight back to Toronto, with a layover in Lima. It’s time to trade the cobblestone streets and mountain vistas for the familiar comforts of home. While I’m eager to be back in Toronto, a piece of my heart will forever remain in Cusco, a city that has captured my imagination and touched my soul. This journey has reminded me of the importance of embracing new experiences, connecting with different cultures, and finding beauty in the unexpected. Until next time, Cusco – gracias for the memories!
