Echoes of Emperors and Saints

Today was a day of diving deep into Tarragona's historical heart. The chill in the December air was a crisp reminder that winter is approaching, but the allure of ancient stones and grand architecture kept us warm with fascination. I was eager to explore the city's most iconic landmarks with my family, and Tarragona certainly didn't disappoint.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Osteria del Lab. The restaurant itself is nestled within ancient walls, setting the perfect tone for our historical explorations. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, and we enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal that fueled us for the day ahead. It was a charming start, and Eglė was particularly taken with the unique blend of modern and medieval aesthetics of the place.

With our appetites sated, we made our way to the Catedral de Tarragona. As we approached, the sheer scale of the cathedral was breathtaking. The mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles spoke volumes about the city's layered history. The intricate carvings on the façade and the towering presence of the structure were truly awe-inspiring.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere. The soaring ceilings and beautiful stained-glass windows created a sense of reverence and wonder. We wandered through the naves, admiring the artwork and the play of light through the colored glass. James, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the structural elements, pointing out the Romanesque arches and the Gothic vaults. Eglė, with her artistic eye, was captivated by the sculptures and the stories they told.

We took our time exploring the cloister, a peaceful retreat with lush gardens and stunning views. It was easy to imagine monks strolling through these very grounds centuries ago. The museum housed within the cathedral was a treasure trove of artifacts, each piece telling a part of Tarragona's rich past. Of course, we couldn't resist the climb up the bell tower, and the panoramic views of Tarragona and the Mediterranean coastline were well worth the effort.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Leaving the cathedral, we strolled along the Passeig Arqueològic, an archaeological promenade that traces the ancient Roman walls of Tarraco. The crisp air and the panoramic views of the city and the sea made for a delightful walk. The walls themselves were a testament to Roman engineering and the city's strategic importance in ancient times. It was fascinating to see the different layers of construction, each reflecting a different era in Tarragona's history.

As we walked, we came across several statues, including those of Emperor Augustus and the Capitoline Wolf. It was a surreal experience to be walking in the footsteps of Roman emperors and to imagine life in this bustling city over two thousand years ago. The informational signs along the way provided valuable context, and we learned about the different phases of construction and the various sieges and battles that these walls had withstood.

Our exploration continued to Plaça del Pallol, a historic square that was once part of the ancient Roman forum. The square was bustling with locals and tourists alike, and the atmosphere was vibrant and lively. We took a moment to soak in the ambiance, imagining the merchants and citizens who would have gathered here centuries ago.

The square itself was surrounded by beautiful buildings featuring Catalan architecture. Cozy cafés and quaint shops lined the perimeter, adding to the charm of the place. It was the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy a refreshing drink while people-watching. Eglė, of course, found a charming little shop selling handmade jewelry and spent a good half-hour browsing the wares.

Lunch was a delightful affair at El Llagut. This restaurant, known for its seafood and rice dishes, was a welcome respite after a morning of exploring. We shared several plates, including the Arroz which was flavorful and satisfying. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the service was attentive and friendly.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a bit of local culture at Alquimista Tgn. This bar, located in the heart of the old town, was a unique and atmospheric spot. The interior, carved into the rock, added to its charm. We sampled a few of their signature cocktails, each one expertly crafted and delicious. It was a fun and relaxing way to end our day of exploration.

For dinner, we chose Racó de l'Abat, a restaurant known for its traditional Tarragona cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of local specialties. We savored each dish, appreciating the fresh ingredients and the authentic flavors. It was a fitting end to a day of immersing ourselves in Tarragona's history and culture.

As we walked back to Hotel SB Ciutat Tarragona, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The memories of the day swirled in my mind – the grandeur of the Catedral de Tarragona, the ancient walls of the Passeig Arqueològic, the lively atmosphere of Plaça del Pallol, and the delicious flavors of El Llagut and Racó de l'Abat. Tomorrow, we plan to continue our exploration of Tarragona, visiting the Torre del Pretori, the Mediterranean Balcony, and Plaça de la Font. I'm particularly excited about the Mediterranean Balcony, as I've heard the views are simply stunning. And of course, Eglė is already planning a shopping trip to El Corte Inglés. It seems our Tarragona adventure is far from over!
