Echoes of Emperors: A Day Immersed in Tarragona's History
Today marked the beginning of our family adventure in Tarragona, and what a start it was! I had been eagerly anticipating this trip, especially the chance to immerse ourselves in the rich history of this ancient Roman city. With James and Eglė by my side, I knew this journey would be filled with discovery and unforgettable moments. Today, we dove headfirst into Tarragona's Roman past, exploring its most iconic landmarks and savoring the local flavors.
Our first stop was the magnificent Amfiteatre de Tarragona. As we approached the site, the sheer scale of the structure took my breath away. Perched dramatically overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the amphitheater stands as a testament to the grandeur of Roman engineering. It was easy to imagine the roar of the crowds as gladiators battled and wild animals roamed the arena. Eglė was particularly fascinated by the history of the site, imagining the dramatic events that unfolded within its walls centuries ago. I tried to picture exotic animals arriving by boat to participate in the games. The cold December air nipped at our noses, but the sun shone brightly, casting a golden glow over the ancient stones. It was truly a surreal experience, standing in a place where so much history had unfolded. We took some photos from El Balcó del Mediterrani before heading down to the venue.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
Next on our itinerary was the Circ Romà. This ancient Roman circus, once used for chariot races, is remarkably well-preserved, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people of Tarraco. As we explored the site, we marveled at the intricate network of underground tunnels and the remnants of the stands that once held thousands of spectators. James, with his keen interest in engineering, was particularly impressed by the architectural design of the circus, noting how the Romans had ingeniously integrated the structure into the surrounding landscape. Eglė enjoyed the visual elements of the Circus, with its integration into the modern city and the amazing views of the city and sea. Although much of the original structure is buried under modern buildings, it was easy to envision the excitement and energy of the chariot races that once took place here. The Circ Romà truly transported us back in time, offering a tangible connection to Tarragona's Roman past.

Our historical exploration continued at the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona. Although the main building is currently under renovation, the temporary exhibition at Tinglado 4 in the port provided a comprehensive overview of Roman Tarraco. The museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including mosaics, sculptures, and everyday objects that offer insights into the lives of the city's inhabitants. I was particularly struck by the intricate details of the mosaics, which depicted scenes from mythology and daily life. Eglė was fascinated by a marble relief depicting a gladiator's shield. The museum visit enriched our understanding of Tarragona's history and provided valuable context for the sites we had already explored.

In the late afternoon, we ventured into the Central Market of Tarragona. This bustling marketplace is housed in a stunning Modernist building and offers a vibrant array of local produce, seafood, meats, and cheeses. The market was opened in 1915. As we wandered through the stalls, we were captivated by the sights, sounds, and smells of the market. We purchased some local delicacies, including fresh fruit and nuts, to enjoy as snacks throughout our trip. The Central Market provided a glimpse into the daily lives of the people of Tarragona and offered a sensory feast that we won't soon forget.
