Whispers of the Past

Today, the Burren revealed its ancient soul to us, offering a glimpse into Ireland's mystical past and breathtaking natural beauty. From hidden trails to prehistoric parks, it was a day filled with wonder and discovery. The Burren is a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to truly connect with the land and its stories.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Ritz in Lisdoonvarna. I remember reading a review that said, "Talent in the Kitchen" and they were not wrong ! Although, I must admit, I was expecting a grander affair, perhaps something akin to The Ritz in London. However, this Ritz had its own charm. It was a cozy, family-run establishment that felt like a warm embrace. We enjoyed a simple yet satisfying breakfast, fueling up for our day of exploration. James had the full Irish breakfast, while Eglė opted for a lighter continental option. I chose the avocado toast, a nod to my Canadian lifestyle, while still enjoying a taste of local ingredients.

Our first adventure was with Hidden Burren Walks. Mary O'Dea, a local guide with generations of Burren heritage, led us on a mesmerizing journey through the landscape. Her family has lived and farmed in the heart of the Burren for over eight generations. As we walked, Mary shared her vast knowledge of the Burren's nature, archaeology, and history. She showed us hidden stone circles and mystical caves, enriching our spiritual journey through the landscape. The landscape was stunning, even under the overcast sky. The limestone pavements stretched out before us, an otherworldly expanse dotted with wildflowers and hardy shrubs. Mary pointed out rare plants and explained how they thrive in this unique environment. Eglė was particularly fascinated by the stories of the ancient people who once lived here, imagining their lives among these stones. I was glad I had packed my hiking boots; the terrain was uneven, and ankle support was essential. James, ever the photographer, captured the raw beauty of the Burren through his lens, promising to add these shots to our growing family album.

The Burren is a testament to the enduring power of nature and the rich tapestry of human history woven into its very stones.

Next on our itinerary was Cavan Burren Park, a prehistoric wonderland that promised to transport us back in time. I had read about the park's summer events, including intergenerational choir performances. Unfortunately, we missed the performance but the park itself was captivating. We explored the various trails, each revealing different aspects of the Burren's ancient past. Eglė was thrilled to discover fossils embedded in the rocks, imagining the creatures that once roamed this land. The park's rugged beauty and sense of history were palpable. Although there were no choir performances, there was something special about the history that resonated with me.

Lunch was at Vaughans on the Prom in Lahinch, a restaurant known for its seafood and stunning views of Liscannor Bay. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a testament to its popularity. We secured a table by the window and savored the panoramic vista of the waves crashing against the shore. James and I shared a plate of fresh oysters, a taste of the Atlantic that was both briny and invigorating. Eglė, always a fan of seafood, devoured a plate of fish and chips, declaring it the best she'd ever had. The staff were friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. I made a mental note to try their signature dish, the seafood chowder, on our next visit.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way to Kilshanny House for a relaxing evening. This traditional Irish pub and restaurant exuded warmth and hospitality. The limestone exterior and the aroma of home baking created an inviting atmosphere. We settled into a cozy corner, surrounded by locals and tourists alike. James and I enjoyed a pint of local beer, while Eglė sipped on a refreshing lemonade. For dinner, we indulged in classic Irish dishes. I ordered the shepherd's pie, a hearty and flavorful comfort food that warmed me from the inside out. James opted for the Burren béilíní, a signature dish featuring wild Atlantic seaweed, locally smoked salmon, Burren beef, and Kilshanny lamb. Eglė, feeling adventurous, tried the mushroom soup and loved it. The staff were amazing, providing top-notch service. The Kilshanny House was a perfect way to end our day, immersed in the best of Irish culture.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Dunguaire Castle and Dysert O'Dea Castle and Archaeology Centre, delving deeper into Ireland's rich medieval history. I'm excited to see these ancient structures and learn more about the people who once inhabited them. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Fox's of Kinvara and Connollys Bar and Restaurant.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting corner of Ireland with my family. The Burren has a way of captivating your soul, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. It is a place where the past and present intertwine, where nature and history converge, and where the simple joys of life are celebrated. Tonight, as I drift off to sleep, I will dream of stone circles, prehistoric parks, and the warm hospitality of the Irish people.
