Exploring Humahuaca's rich history at the Independence Monument, savoring local cuisine, and finding unique crafts in Argentina.
A Day in Humahuaca: Where History and Beauty Collide
Today was all about soaking in the essence of Humahuaca. From panoramic views that stretched across the colorful mountains to delving into the heart of Argentine independence, the experiences were as enriching as they were visually stunning. I love that this trip allows me to combine my love for history and beautiful landscapes!
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Las mejores empanadas. I'd heard whispers that this place served some of the best empanadas in the region, and I couldn't resist putting that claim to the test. Let me tell you, the locals weren't exaggerating! I went with Verito's recommendation from Google reviews and ordered three fried empanadas. They were indeed a bit heavy, but the taste was incredible and cheap. The owner's friendly service only added to the charm. Fueled up and ready, we headed out to explore what Humahuaca had to offer.

Our first stop was the Formación Geológica Peñas Blancas - Mirador. The views from here were nothing short of spectacular. The trail was a short 3-mile loop, perfect for a morning walk, and the panoramic vista of Humahuaca and the surrounding mountains was well worth the effort. The colors of the landscape were incredible, with the sun casting shadows that seemed to dance across the rock formations. I spent a good hour just taking photos and trying to capture the sheer scale and beauty of it all.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, like gazing at a landscape that has witnessed centuries of history.
Next on the list was the Monumento a los Héroes de la Independencia. This imposing monument stands proudly on Santa Bárbara Hill, a testament to the battles fought in Humahuaca during the Argentine War of Independence. As I climbed the lateral stairs, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the heroes who fought for freedom. The monument itself is a masterpiece, with the bronze figure of Pedro Socompa, the indigenous messenger of freedom, standing tall against the backdrop of the Quebrada. Apparently some locals believe the statue is of Diego Viltipoco, an Omaguaca Indian Chief who helped Belgrano in the Independence Fight. The views from the top were breathtaking, offering a panoramic perspective of Humahuaca and the valley.

After a morning of exploration, my friends and I were ready for lunch. We chose Ser Andino Restaurante, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Andean cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the menu was filled with local delicacies. I decided to try the locro, a hearty stew made with beans, corn, and meat. It was the perfect comfort food for a chilly afternoon, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. My friend couldn't stop raving about the empanadas, which apparently were delicious.

With our bellies full, we ventured into Humahuaca Artesanías y Regionales for some afternoon shopping. This place is a treasure trove of local crafts, from colorful textiles to intricate ceramics. I was on the hunt for a unique souvenir to take back to Berlin, and I wasn't disappointed. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven poncho, the colors mirroring the vibrant hues of the mountains we'd seen earlier in the day. My friends found some beautiful jewelry and other textiles. It's easy to see why this shop has such a high rating; the variety and quality of the crafts are exceptional.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at La Terminal for dinner. Despite its name, it's more than just a place to grab a quick bite before a bus ride. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and the menu offered a mix of local and international dishes. I opted for one of their specialties: homemade pasta with goat cheese and quinoa. It was a delicious and satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. Rick CS on Google reviews mentions that the bathrooms are outside the restaurant and cost money to use. Good to know!

Reflecting on the day, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Humahuaca. It's a place that stays with you, not just for its stunning landscapes but also for its rich culture and warm, welcoming people.
Tomorrow, we're heading to Purmamarca to see the Mirador Panoramico and explore Inca Cueva. I've heard the views from the Mirador are incredible, and I'm excited to discover more of the Quebrada's hidden gems. Afterwards, we plan to grab a bite at Los Puestos Restaurante for lunch and Pinocho Restaurante for dinner. And if we're up for it, we might check out La Peñita Art-Huma bar for a nightcap. Until then, goodnight from Humahuaca!
It's fascinating to think about how much this region has witnessed throughout history. It makes me appreciate the present moment and the journey I'm on even more. Maybe I'll even try to learn more about the local language; it's always a good way to connect with the culture on a deeper level.
