Saying Goodbye to Shikoku

As my journey through Shikoku Island draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. Excitement for the comforts of home mingles with a tinge of sadness at leaving behind this enchanting land. Today, the final day of our adventure, promised a blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty, a fitting end to an unforgettable trip with my friends.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ombelico. It was a delightful start, offering a taste of local flavors and setting the tone for a day of exploration. The cafe's calm and welcoming atmosphere was the perfect spot to fuel up for the day's adventures. Aisha and I enjoyed the organic, pesticide-free vegetables, which added a special touch to our meal.

With our appetites satisfied, we set out to visit the Statues of the Three Tosa Samurai. These statues, standing proudly in Kochi, pay homage to Hanpeita Takechi, Ryoma Sakamoto, and Shintaro Nakaoka, three legendary samurai who played pivotal roles in Japan's modernization. Standing before these figures, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for their contributions to Japanese history. The craftsmanship of the statues was remarkable, a testament to the artistry and dedication that goes into preserving history. We took some time to read the nearby information plaques, delving deeper into the stories of these heroic figures and enriching our understanding of their impact on Japanese society.

Next on our itinerary was Kahokuno Natural Park. As we wandered along the scenic walking trails, we were enveloped by lush greenery, a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The park's well-maintained paths were perfect for a leisurely stroll, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the stunning natural surroundings. The tranquil sounds of nature created an atmosphere of relaxation and rejuvenation. Although I had forgotten my sunscreen, the cool breeze and the shade from the trees offered some respite from the sun. The park was accessible year-round, but I can only imagine the vibrant foliage during the autumn months painting the park in warm hues.

Our final stop of the day was Burandoshoppuhapinesukochiten, where we did some souvenir shopping. I picked up a few small trinkets to remind me of our time in Shikoku, as well as some gifts for Aisha and Ethan back home. It was a fun way to end the day, browsing through the local goods and reflecting on all the incredible experiences we've had.

As evening approached, we made our way to Okamura in Nankoku for a farewell dinner. This quintessential izakaya offered an authentic taste of Japanese cuisine, a perfect way to celebrate the end of our journey. The inviting ambiance and friendly staff made us feel right at home. We savored a variety of traditional dishes, including grilled meats, fresh sashimi, and seasonal specialties that highlighted the best ingredients from the region. I made sure to try some local sake, which paired perfectly with our meal. The restaurant operates in the evenings, making it an ideal spot for dinner while enjoying local drinks such as sake or shochu.

Reflecting on this trip, I am struck by how much Shikoku Island has to offer. From its stunning natural landscapes to its rich cultural heritage, this destination has something for everyone. I am grateful for the opportunity to have explored this beautiful island with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of stepping outside of my comfort zone and embracing new experiences. As a software developer, I often find myself caught up in the digital world, but this journey has allowed me to reconnect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the physical world. The balance between technology and nature is something I want to incorporate more into my life back in Toronto.

As we prepare to leave Shikoku, I am already looking forward to our next adventure. Who knows where our travels will take us next, but I am confident that it will be another unforgettable experience. Though our spontaneous approach meant we sometimes had to be flexible with accommodations, it allowed us to discover hidden gems and truly immerse ourselves in the local culture. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Until next time, Shikoku. Thank you for the memories.

And to my readers, thank you for joining me on this journey. Stay tuned for more travel adventures to come!
