First Day Wonders in Tokushima
Touching down in Shikoku, Japan, with my friends marked the start of an adventure I'd been eagerly anticipating. As someone who loves blending cultural experiences with natural wonders, I knew this island would be a treasure trove of memories. Our first day was packed with exploring the famed Naruto Whirlpools and savoring the local flavors of Tokushima. Little did I know, this was just a taste of the incredible journey that lies ahead!

Our day began bright and early with breakfast at Hattorikun. I must admit, seeing the name, I immediately thought of the manga series Ninja Hattori-kun! Turns out, it’s a popular breakfast spot, and it fueled us up perfectly for the day ahead. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was a delightful start, offering a genuine taste of local life.

With our bellies full, we headed straight for the Naruto Whirlpools, a natural phenomenon I had only ever seen in documentaries. As a Bajan, I'm used to beautiful beaches and calm waters, so the idea of massive whirlpools was fascinating. We had two options to view these natural wonders: a sightseeing cruise that gets you up close or the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, a glass-floored promenade suspended under the Onaruto Bridge.

We chose the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, and it was an incredible experience. Walking along the 450-meter walkway, 45 meters above the sea, gave us a unique perspective. Through the glass floor, we watched the swirling tides of the Naruto Strait, one of the fastest whirlpools in the world. The sheer power of nature was on full display, and it was a humbling sight. I even managed to capture a few decent photos, though no picture could truly capture the feeling of witnessing such a spectacle. The whirlpools are formed by the meeting of the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean, creating a dramatic display of natural power.
Sometimes, the most awe-inspiring moments are when you realize the immense power and beauty of nature.
After the exhilarating experience at the whirlpools, our stomachs started rumbling again. We decided to have lunch at Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka. This restaurant is known for its beautiful scenery and delicious food, including local dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. I opted for a seafood set meal, eager to taste the fresh flavors of the region. The meal was a delightful mix of textures and tastes, highlighting the local culinary traditions.

Following lunch, we took some time to explore the Shikoku Shop 88. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs and immerse myself in the local culture. This shop offers a wide range of products from all four prefectures of Shikoku, including Sanuki udon noodles, local confectionery and crafts. It was a great place to find unique mementos of our trip, and I ended up buying some local sweets and a handcrafted ceramic bowl.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Tataki Kobo for dinner. This restaurant specializes in *katsuo no tataki* (seared bonito), a local delicacy that I was excited to try. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists, all eager to sample this regional specialty. The bonito was lightly seared over straw, giving it a smoky flavor that was simply divine. I paired it with some local sake, which complemented the dish perfectly. It was the perfect end to our first day in Shikoku.

One thing I quickly realized is that Shikoku is a treasure trove of unique experiences. The island seamlessly blends natural beauty with rich cultural traditions, offering something for every traveler. I'm excited to see what adventures tomorrow will bring, as we plan to explore Shikoku Karst and Todoroki Falls.
As we hadn't booked any hotels in advance, we embraced the spontaneity of our trip and started looking for accommodations. We stumbled upon a charming guesthouse, run by a friendly local family. The rooms were simple but comfortable, and the hospitality was exceptional. It felt like a true home away from home, and I was grateful for the warm welcome after a long day of exploring. As someone used to the hustle and bustle of Toronto, it was a welcome change to be surrounded by such tranquility.
Before drifting off to sleep, I spent some time reflecting on the day's adventures. From the awe-inspiring Naruto Whirlpools to the delicious local cuisine, Shikoku had already captured my heart. I'm eager to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue our journey through this enchanting island. With each new experience, I feel a deeper connection to the culture and traditions of Japan, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my friends. Tomorrow, we're off to explore the stunning Shikoku Karst and the serene Todoroki Falls. I've heard that Shikoku Karst offers breathtaking views and unique landscapes, while Todoroki Falls is a hidden gem surrounded by lush greenery. I'm excited to immerse myself in nature and capture the beauty of these destinations through my lens.
I'm also looking forward to trying more local cuisine, including the highly-recommended Yuzuan Restaurant for dinner, and perhaps even sampling some local sake at Bar Kohno. As a software developer, I appreciate the precision and attention to detail that goes into crafting both technology and culinary masterpieces. I'm curious to see how the local chefs blend traditional techniques with innovative flavors, creating dishes that are both familiar and surprising. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a few new cooking tips to try out back home in Toronto!
As I close my eyes, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Shikoku has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the next few days will be filled with even more unforgettable experiences. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our adventure through this captivating island!
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention – I did manage to find a small raincoat at Shikoku Shop 88, so at least I'm somewhat prepared for any unexpected showers. But I'll definitely need to remember to pack sunscreen next time!
Tomorrow, with Aisha in mind, I am hoping to find some special crafts that reflect the artistry and heritage of Shikoku. I know she would appreciate a delicate piece of pottery or a hand-woven textile, something that captures the essence of this beautiful island. And for Ethan, I'm on the lookout for a fun and educational souvenir that will remind him of our adventures in Japan. Perhaps a traditional toy or a book about Japanese folklore? The possibilities are endless, and I'm excited to discover the perfect treasures to bring back home.
As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile at the thought of sharing these stories and experiences with my family. Travel has a way of bringing us closer together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as I continue my journey through Shikoku, I'm grateful for the opportunity to connect with new cultures, explore breathtaking landscapes, and discover the magic that lies within the unknown.
