Day 6: Diving Deep and Strolling Along the Coast: A Day of Wonders in Barbados
Experience the underwater magic with Atlantis Submarines and enjoy a relaxing walk on the Richard Haynes Boardwalk. A perfect Bajan day!
Submerged Adventures and Coastal Delights
Today was a day of contrasts, from the serene depths of the Caribbean Sea to the lively Richard Haynes Boardwalk. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day here in Barbados, and I'm thrilled to share every moment with you.
Our day started with a hearty Bajan breakfast at Artsplash Cafe. Aisha had been raving about their smoothies, and she was right – the mango and passion fruit blend was the perfect way to kick off our adventures. Ethan, of course, opted for pancakes, and I enjoyed a strong cup of Lavazza coffee while soaking in the sea view from the verandah. It’s a trendy spot, and I could see why it’s so popular with locals and tourists alike. The cafe’s proximity to the boardwalk made it a convenient starting point for our day. It was also nice to see some local art on display, reminding me of the vibrant culture that Barbados holds so dear.

Next on the agenda was Atlantis Submarines! Ethan had been counting down the minutes for this, and honestly, so had I. As a Bajan who grew up hearing tales of the sea, I was eager to see it from a completely different perspective. We boarded the catamaran Ocean Quest, and the short ride out to the submarine site was beautiful, with the turquoise water shimmering under the morning sun.
Exploring the underwater world without getting wet? That's an experience I never thought I'd have, but Atlantis Submarines made it a reality.
The submarine itself was impressive. Atlantis Submarines have been operating in Barbados since 1987, and our submarine, Atlantis 15, has completed over 14,000 dives. Climbing down the steep ladder into the belly of the sub was a bit of an adventure in itself, but once inside, it was surprisingly spacious and comfortable. The large porthole windows gave everyone a fantastic view, and Ethan was glued to his, pointing out every fish and coral formation he could spot.

Captain Hugh and the crew were fantastic, providing commentary about the marine life and even pointing out a shipwreck. We descended to about 150 feet, and the world transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors. I never expected to see such vibrant coral reefs and so many different species of fish. It was like being in a giant aquarium, but so much more real and awe-inspiring. I think this experience really sparked something in Ethan; he was full of questions about marine biology afterward. I must admit, even Aisha and I were captivated by the underwater landscape.
After resurfacing, we headed to Speightstown for lunch at Island Plates. This charming little spot, tucked away behind a car park, is a real gem. Run by two sisters, Pat and Marie, it offers authentic Bajan cuisine with a personal touch. Aisha and I opted for the daily special, which was a delicious curry, while Ethan devoured a fish sandwich. The food was incredible, and the atmosphere was so relaxed and welcoming. It felt like we were having lunch at a friend's house. It's these kinds of local experiences that make traveling so worthwhile. It reminded me of the simple, honest food I grew up with in Speightstown.

With our bellies full, we decided to spend the afternoon at The Richard Haynes Boardwalk. This 1.6-kilometer wooden promenade stretches along the south coast, offering stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. We parked the car and started our stroll, enjoying the refreshing sea breeze and the lively atmosphere. The boardwalk is a hub of activity, with people jogging, families picnicking, and tourists soaking up the sun.
Ethan, of course, was immediately drawn to the beach, so we spent some time building sandcastles and splashing in the waves. The beaches are relatively narrow but offer a relaxed atmosphere perfect for swimming. Aisha and I enjoyed watching him play, reminiscing about our own childhoods spent on the beaches of Barbados and Jamaica.
As the sun began to set, we walked further along the boardwalk, passing several restaurants and bars. The vibe was upbeat, with music playing and people enjoying happy hour. We stopped at the Green Monkey Bar & Grill for a quick drink. While the service was a bit slow, the atmosphere was great, with a nice pool area and lots of greenery. I had a rum punch, while Aisha and Ethan enjoyed some refreshing fruit punches.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a special meal at Nishi Restaurant in Holetown. This stylish spot is known for its Asian-Pacific inspired menu, blending traditional flavors with modern twists. The owner, Paul, greeted us warmly, making us feel right at home. We started with the dim sum, which was absolutely delicious, and then moved on to sushi and some Caribbean-inspired entrees. The food was exceptional, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As we drove back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. From the depths of the ocean to the flavors of Bajan cuisine, Barbados continues to surprise and delight us. Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Mount Gay Visitors' Centre and National Heroes Square, so stay tuned for more adventures! And perhaps a nightcap at McBride's Music Pub & Night Club. It's days like these that remind me why I love this island so much, and why I wanted to share it with my family.
I am particularly proud to share the island's beauty with Ethan and Aisha. It is important for them to see where I came from and to experience the warmth and culture of Barbados. I hope that Ethan will grow to appreciate his Bajan heritage as much as I do. It is more than just a vacation; it is a connection to our roots.
Until tomorrow,
David
P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to misplace my sunglasses today! I will need to pick up a new pair soon. Also, We Gatherin' is ongoing in September, with a focus on cricket and St. James parish. Perhaps we'll catch a game tomorrow!
Oh, and I almost forgot! I saw that there are electric shuttle buses being trialed in Sanur, Bali. It's great to see other islands embracing sustainable tourism! I hope Barbados can follow suit soon.
