Island Gardens and Culinary Delights

Today was a day dedicated to exploring the natural beauty and savoring the flavors of Barbados. It’s amazing how much the island has to offer beyond its stunning beaches. I wanted to show Aisha and Ethan a different side of Barbados, one that connects us to its rich botanical heritage and vibrant culinary scene. It was a day of discovery, relaxation, and delicious food, making it a perfect Sunday in paradise.

Our day began with a hearty Bajan breakfast at Salt Café in Bridgetown. Aisha had read rave reviews about their sweet potato crusted fish, and I was eager to try their Asian wings. Ethan, of course, opted for the classic crispy fried chicken. The cafe itself is a cozy little spot, and it was easy to see why it's a south coast favorite. The food was a delightful mix of international flair and local flavors, just as promised.

Fueled up and ready, we set off for Hunte's Gardens. The drive itself was lovely, taking us through the scenic St. Joseph Parish. As we approached the gardens, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. I had heard so much about this place, and I was eager to experience its beauty firsthand. The gardens are nestled in a lush gully, and you really do feel like you're entering a lost world.

Anthony Hunte, the creator of this enchanting garden, has truly crafted something special. The story goes that he transformed an overgrown sinkhole into this extraordinary environment. As we wandered through the meandering pathways, hidden nooks, and artistic arrangements, I was struck by the tranquility and vibrant flora. The classical music playing softly in the background added to the magical atmosphere. Ethan was fascinated by the various plants, and Aisha, ever the nature enthusiast, was in her element, snapping photos at every turn. The garden is a reflection of Hunte's creativity, and it's clear that he has poured his heart and soul into this project.

The least publicised but most memorable gardens on Barbados are owned and run by the engaging Anthony Hunte, whose English ancestors settled on the island back in the 1600s.

After Hunte's Gardens, we made our way to the Flower Forest Botanical Gardens. Located on the historic grounds of the Richmond Plantation, the Flower Forest offers incredible scenery and views across the island's forest. At 850 feet above sea level, the breeze was refreshing, and the panoramic views were simply breathtaking. We strolled along the well-maintained paths, surrounded by dazzling tropical colors and fragrant flowers. Ethan was particularly excited about spotting some local wildlife, and we managed to catch a glimpse of a hummingbird flitting among the blossoms.

The Flower Forest is more than just a botanical garden; it's a place where people and nature unite to create something beautiful. Originally a sugar cane plantation, the area has been transformed into a lush paradise for nature lovers. The gardens offer a peaceful retreat from the sun and the hustle of the capital. As we wandered through the trees, we found several spots to pause and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the distant eastern coastline. It’s amazing how much the island’s landscape changes within a relatively short distance.

By lunchtime, we were all feeling a bit peckish, so we headed to JuJu's Beach Bar for a casual meal by the sea. Located just north of the Fairmont Royal Pavilion, JuJu's is a very casual beach bar serving local food and ice-cold beverages. Aisha and I both ordered the flying fish, a Bajan staple, while Ethan went for a burger and fries. The food was fresh, flavorful, and full of local charm. The real star, though, was the view: crystal-clear turquoise waters just steps away. We spent a leisurely hour or so enjoying our lunch, soaking up the sun, and watching the waves roll in. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with locals and tourists mingling and chatting.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre. Dubbed as the most stylish place to shop and dine in Barbados, Limegrove is home to a treasure trove of duty-free jewelry, apparel, and accessories. We strolled through the various boutiques, admiring the designer brands and local crafts. Aisha found a beautiful necklace at one of the jewelry stores, and Ethan picked out a new cricket bat. I was tempted by a new camera lens, but I decided to hold off for now. The center itself is beautifully designed, with tall palms, water features, and designer shop fronts creating an air of calm. It's a great place to escape the heat and indulge in a bit of luxury.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Lone Star Restaurant & Hotel for dinner. This beachfront restaurant has a reputation as the Ivy of the Caribbean, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. The setting was idyllic, with the restaurant sitting directly on the beach. The atmosphere was buzzy yet laid-back, and we were immediately made to feel welcome by the friendly staff. The menu was a fusion of Caribbean and international flavors, and we all found something to our liking. Aisha and I shared a wood-fired pizza, while Ethan opted for the catch of the day. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. As we ate, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in a riot of colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As we drove back to our accommodations, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had explored lush gardens, savored local cuisine, and indulged in a bit of luxury. But more importantly, we had spent quality time together as a family, creating memories that we would cherish for years to come. Barbados has a way of capturing your heart, and I'm so grateful to be able to share this experience with my loved ones.

Tomorrow, we are planning to explore the underwater world with Atlantis Submarines and take a leisurely stroll along The Richard Haynes Boardwalk. I can’t wait to see what new adventures await us!

It was also nice to see that the We Gatherin' in Barbados event is still ongoing, with September dedicated to Cricket and St. James Parish. It's wonderful to see the island celebrating its heritage and culture.

Quote of the day:

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found not in grand adventures, but in the simple moments shared with loved ones amidst nature's splendor.
