As our family adventure in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park continues, today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of this natural wonder. We set out to explore Lagoa Bonita - Rota, a destination that promised stunning vistas and unforgettable experiences. The day unfolded with a blend of thrilling 4x4 rides, challenging dune climbs, and serene moments spent swimming in crystal-clear lagoons. It was a day that reminded me why I love traveling – for the chance to disconnect from the ordinary and connect with the extraordinary.

Our day began early, with a hearty breakfast at the Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde. Sophie, Émile, and I fueled up on traditional Brazilian fare, knowing we'd need the energy for the adventures ahead. The anticipation was palpable as we piled into the 4x4, ready to tackle the rugged terrain that separated us from Lagoa Bonita. The journey itself was an experience, bouncing along sandy tracks, the landscape transforming with every turn. The temperature in December in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park typically ranges from a high of 89°F (32°C) to a low of 78°F (26°C). December is considered hot and slightly windy.

Our first stop was Frutos de Goiás Santo Amaro MA, a local shop known for its delicious fruit popsicles. Émile's eyes lit up at the sight of the colorful treats, and we indulged in a variety of flavors, from classic strawberry to exotic Amazonian fruits. It was a sweet start to our day, and a perfect way to cool down in the rising heat. As a historical archivist, I always appreciate the chance to connect with local culture, and Frutos de Goiás offered a taste of the region's natural bounty. Back on the road, the landscape grew increasingly dramatic. Towering sand dunes stretched as far as the eye could see, interspersed with shimmering lagoons. It felt like we had entered another world, a surreal and captivating realm of sand and water. The drive to Lagoa Bonita involves an adventurous 18 km trail in a 4x4 vehicle.

Reaching the base of the dunes, we began our ascent to Lagoa Bonita. The climb was challenging, the sand shifting beneath our feet with every step. Émile, ever the energetic explorer, scrambled ahead, his laughter echoing across the dunes. Sophie and I followed at a more leisurely pace, taking in the breathtaking views that unfolded with every meter gained. After rising approximately 85m of dune, a panoramic view of dunes and lagoons, including Lagoa Bonita, will appear.

Finally, we reached the summit, and the sight that greeted us was nothing short of spectacular. Lagoa Bonita lay before us, a vast expanse of crystal-clear water nestled amidst the towering dunes. The contrast between the white sand and the turquoise water was mesmerizing, a scene that seemed straight out of a dream. It's a view that undoubtedly excites everyone.

We spent the afternoon swimming in the refreshing waters of Lagoa Bonita, the cool water a welcome respite from the heat. Émile splashed and played with abandon, while Sophie and I floated peacefully, soaking in the tranquility of our surroundings. As someone who spends much of my time immersed in historical documents, it was a welcome change to be immersed in nature, feeling the sun on my skin and the sand between my toes. There was plenty of free time to sunbathe and enjoy the lagoon.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to a vantage point overlooking the lagoon. The sunset was nothing short of magical, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. The dunes glowed with a warm, golden light, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. Watching the sunset over Lagoa Bonita was a moment I will cherish forever, a reminder of the simple joys of life and the beauty that exists in the world.

The Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde was our choice for both lunch and dinner. I enjoyed the fact that we were able to truly immerse ourselves in the local culture and not have to worry about where to eat, as the food was incredible! I think Émile's favorite part of the day was how easy it was to enjoy the local culture. It's an incredible experience to get to know one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to our guesthouse in Ponta Verde, filled with memories of our adventure at Lagoa Bonita. Émile was already fast asleep, dreaming of dunes and lagoons, while Sophie and I reminisced about our favorite moments of the day. It was a day of physical challenges, natural beauty, and shared experiences, a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're excited to explore more of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Our itinerary includes visits to Queimada dos Britos and Mirante das dunas de Vassouras, promising more opportunities to discover the unique landscapes and hidden gems of this remarkable region. And perhaps, after a day of exploration, we'll unwind at the Kayak Bar, soaking in the local atmosphere and enjoying a well-deserved drink. Before drifting off to sleep, I realized I had forgotten my sunglasses and portable charger at the guesthouse back in São Luís! Luckily, I was able to purchase a new pair of sunglasses. I will have to rely on Sophie's portable charger until we return to São Luís. It's a good thing that we are traveling together as a family, as we are able to share our belongings and help each other out. It is a good reminder to always double-check your packing list before leaving for a trip!

The memories we created today will stay with us long after we leave this magical place. The laughter, the challenges, and the shared moments of awe – these are the things that make travel so enriching and meaningful. And as I reflect on our day at Lagoa Bonita, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
