Kyoto's Gentle Embrace

Today was a symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors that painted a vivid picture of Kyoto's soul. It was a day where history whispered from ancient shrines, and the gentle flow of canals mirrored the city's serene spirit. I savored exquisite meals that were not just food, but artistry on a plate, and even found a moment to unwind with a meticulously crafted cocktail. It was a day that reaffirmed why I chose Kyoto for this solo journey – a place where every corner holds a story, and every experience is a treasure.

My day began with an early breakfast at Ajikyu. This tiny izakaya, tucked away in a residential part of Gion, felt like stepping into someone's home. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a stark contrast to the chilly morning air outside. Apparently, Ajikyu is known for its fresh seafood and the hospitality of its matriarch, who still works there in her late 80s! I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was simple, yet deeply satisfying, a comforting start to a day of exploration. The warmth of the miso soup was particularly welcome, chasing away the last vestiges of sleep and preparing me for the adventures ahead.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I made my way to Heian Shrine. The shrine, dedicated to Emperors Kammu and Komei, was built to commemorate Kyoto's 1100th anniversary as the capital of Japan. As I approached, the massive torii gate loomed before me, a vibrant vermillion structure that seemed to guard the entrance to another world. The scale of the gate was truly impressive, a testament to the grandeur of the Heian period. The main buildings, replicas of the original Imperial Palace, were equally striking, their traditional architecture a feast for the eyes. The shrine's spacious courtyard provided an expansive view, allowing me to fully appreciate the intricate details of the structures. The vibrant colors of the shrine stood out against the clear blue sky, creating a postcard-perfect scene.

I took my time wandering through the grounds, admiring the meticulous craftsmanship and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Although Heian Shrine is relatively new compared to other ancient sites in Kyoto, it holds significant cultural importance, serving as a symbol of the city's rich history and resilience. Apparently, in 1976, the shrine was damaged in a fire but was rebuilt three years later with funds collected exclusively through donations. The shrine is also known for its gardens, which are arranged around a central lake crossed by a picturesque bridge. Although I didn't have time to explore the gardens fully today, I made a mental note to return during cherry blossom season, when the weeping cherry trees are in full bloom.

The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.

Next on my itinerary was the Shirakawa Canal, a picturesque waterway that meanders through the Gion district. I strolled along the canal's edge, captivated by the charming scenery. Traditional wooden machiya houses lined the canal, their reflections shimmering in the water. The gentle sound of the flowing water created a soothing ambiance, a welcome escape from the bustling city streets. Apparently, the Shirakawa area has been dedicated to entertainment for centuries and the city has done an amazing job of preserving the look and feel of the old days. I could almost imagine geishas and samurai strolling along these very streets centuries ago.

The canal was particularly enchanting, with weeping willow trees adding to the romantic atmosphere. I paused to admire the Tatsumi-bashi bridge, a small, unassuming structure that has become an iconic symbol of Kyoto. It's easy to see why this spot is so popular with photographers and Instagrammers – the combination of the canal, the traditional houses, and the bridge creates a truly magical scene. I took several photos myself, trying to capture the essence of this serene and beautiful place. The canal has also served as a vital water source for the city for centuries, highlighting Kyoto's historic relationship with water management.

Lunch was at Saishuan Shiraki, a small, cozy restaurant near the Kyoto Imperial Palace. This restaurant offers vegan Kyoto-style dishes called obanzai. With only a handful of seats arranged around the chef, it felt like dining in someone's kitchen. The chef, a friendly and welcoming woman, spoke excellent English and explained each dish with passion and enthusiasm. I opted for the set menu, a delightful array of small, flavorful dishes that showcased the best of Kyoto's local produce. The meal was a culinary journey, each dish a work of art. From the delicate tofu to the flavorful pickled vegetables, every bite was a revelation. It was a truly memorable dining experience, one that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a cocktail at the Kyoto Star Bar. This bar is known for its expertly crafted drinks and its sophisticated atmosphere. The bartender, dressed in a traditional kimono, greeted me with a warm smile and guided me to a comfortable seat at the counter. I ordered their signature Ki No Bi Negroni, a unique twist on the classic cocktail that incorporated local gin and ingredients. The drink was expertly balanced, the flavors melding together in perfect harmony. The bar's intimate setting and the bartender's impeccable service made for a truly enjoyable experience. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing, a moment to savor the flavors of Kyoto and reflect on the day's adventures.

Dinner was at Kikunoi Roan, a Michelin 2-star restaurant in Gion. This establishment is a sister restaurant to the world-famous Kikunoi Honten. Knowing that some find traditional kaiseki too formal, I was hoping that Kikunoi Roan would offer a more modern take on kaiseki. From the moment I stepped inside, I knew I was in for a special experience. The ambiance was elegant and refined, yet welcoming and comfortable. The staff greeted me with impeccable hospitality, guiding me to my seat at the counter, where I had a front-row view of the chefs at work.

The kaiseki menu was a culinary masterpiece, each dish a work of art. The flavors were subtle and complex, showcasing the best of seasonal ingredients. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and artistry that went into each creation. The service was impeccable, the staff anticipating my every need. It was an unforgettable dining experience, one that I will cherish for years to come. The format of the kaiseki meal was largely similar to classical meals. I began with appetizers and a seasonal plate known as the hassun, followed by sashimi, several dishes each focusing on a separate cooking technique (simmered, grilled, etc.) before finishing with rice, soup, pickles, and dessert. Dessert was not the usual fruit, but often times a more obviously 'sweet' confection, such as glutinous rice balls, red beans, watermelon cubes, and coffee ice cream drizzled with maple syrup.

As I walked back to my hotel, the streets of Kyoto were quiet and peaceful. The day's experiences replayed in my mind, a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and flavors. Kyoto had once again cast its spell on me, enveloping me in its beauty and charm. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible city, to immerse myself in its culture, and to discover its hidden gems. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Gion and Hanamikoji Street, eager to explore more of Kyoto's enchanting neighborhoods. Until then, I will drift off to sleep, dreaming of temples, canals, and culinary delights.

I am also excited to experience some of the local shopping that Kyoto has to offer, such as visiting the GIFT KIOSK tomorrow. It will be great to pick up some souvenirs for Sophie and Émile.
