Exploring the Hidden Charms of Port Antonio, Jamaica
Day 3: Chasing Waterfalls and Jerk Flavors: A Day of Jamaican Delights
Discover the natural beauty of Reach Falls and the spicy flavors of Boston Beach on a vibrant day trip in Port Antonio.
A Day of Natural Splendor and Culinary Adventures
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty and authentic flavors of Jamaica. From the cascading waters of Reach Falls to the jerk-infused air of Boston Beach, Olivia and I dove headfirst into experiences that painted a vivid picture of Port Antonio. It's days like these that remind me why we traded the Toronto skyline for the allure of the Caribbean.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sea Breeze. The ocean view was the perfect backdrop as we enjoyed a traditional Jamaican breakfast. I opted for the ackee and saltfish, while Olivia savored the callaloo. The spices, the freshness—it was a delightful start to what promised to be an adventurous day. This was a great start to our day, fortifying us for the adventures that lay ahead.
Journey to Reach Falls
After breakfast, we set off for Reach Falls, a drive that took us through winding roads and lush landscapes. The journey itself was a treat, with every turn revealing a new vista of verdant hills and vibrant flora. As an urban planner, I couldn't help but admire how the natural environment seamlessly blended with the local communities. It was a stark contrast to the concrete jungles I'm used to back in Toronto, and a refreshing reminder of the importance of sustainable development.
Arriving at Reach Falls, we were immediately greeted by the sound of cascading water and the sight of the falls plunging into a series of natural pools. The area was teeming with life, from the vibrant birds flitting through the trees to the small fish darting in the clear waters. The falls have a fascinating history, having once served as a refuge for runaway slaves. Knowing this added a layer of depth to the experience, connecting us to the island's rich and complex past.

We decided to hire a local guide, a friendly Rasta named Chris, who knew every nook and cranny of the falls. He led us through the cool, refreshing waters, pointing out hidden caves and natural jacuzzis. Olivia was a bit hesitant at first, but Chris's easygoing nature and obvious expertise quickly put her at ease. We swam through the 'Rabbit Hole,' a narrow underwater passage that led to a hidden cave behind the falls. It was exhilarating, and the sense of discovery was palpable.
The earth has music for those who listen.
The falls themselves are stunning, a series of cascades that tumble down moss-covered rocks into crystal-clear pools. We spent hours exploring the area, swimming in the pools, and simply soaking in the natural beauty. I couldn't resist taking a few photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment. Photography has always been a passion of mine, and Reach Falls provided endless opportunities to capture stunning images.
Boston Beach and Jerk Paradise
After our refreshing adventure at Reach Falls, we drove to Boston Beach, known as the birthplace of jerk cuisine. The aroma of spices hung heavy in the air as we approached the beach, our stomachs rumbling in anticipation. Boston Beach is a small, picturesque cove with golden sand and waves that are perfect for surfing. While neither Olivia nor I are experienced surfers, we enjoyed watching the locals ride the waves, their skill and grace a testament to their connection with the ocean. It’s amazing to see how integrated the ocean is with the culture here. I find it quite similar to my childhood home back in the British Virgin Islands.

The main attraction at Boston Beach, however, is the jerk. We sampled jerk chicken and jerk pork from several different vendors, each with their own unique blend of spices and cooking techniques. The meat was smoky, spicy, and incredibly flavorful. As someone who enjoys cooking Caribbean dishes, I was fascinated by the nuances of each vendor's recipe. I even managed to get a few tips from one of the cooks, who shared some of his secret ingredients with me. I can’t wait to try to replicate the flavors back home, though I suspect the Toronto air might not impart the same magic as the Jamaican breeze.
Olivia, who is usually not a fan of spicy food, surprised me by how much she enjoyed the jerk. She even braved the Scotch bonnet peppers, albeit with a glass of water close at hand. It was a testament to the quality of the food and the vibrant atmosphere of Boston Beach. We sat on the beach, enjoying our jerk and watching the sunset, the sky ablaze with color. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.
Evening Reflections and Culinary Delights
For dinner, we decided to try Wilkes Cuisine Seafood Restaurant. The restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and authentic Jamaican dishes, and it did not disappoint. I had the steamed fish with veggies, which was flavorful and perfectly cooked. Olivia opted for the garlic shrimp, which she declared was the best she'd ever had. The owner, Chef Nigel, was a gracious host, making us feel welcome and sharing stories about the local area.

After dinner, we made a quick stop at Sandy and Friends, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and refreshing drinks. We enjoyed a couple of Red Stripes, chatting with the locals and soaking in the laid-back vibe. It was a great way to unwind after a day of adventure.

As we drove back to our Airbnb, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's experiences. We had immersed ourselves in the natural beauty of Reach Falls, savored the authentic flavors of Boston Beach, and connected with the local community. It was a day that encapsulated everything we love about travel: discovery, adventure, and connection.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Folly Ruins and Nonsuch Cave. I'm particularly excited about the Folly Ruins, as I'm fascinated by architecture and history. But for now, I'm content to bask in the memories of today, the taste of jerk still lingering on my tongue and the sound of cascading water echoing in my ears.
I am so grateful to be sharing these experiences with Olivia. As someone who grew up in the Caribbean, it feels wonderful to share a piece of my heritage with her, and to see her embrace it with such enthusiasm. It's moments like these that strengthen our bond and create memories that will last a lifetime. And who knows, maybe one day we'll trade the Toronto skyline for a permanent spot under the Jamaican sun. For now, though, I'm just happy to be here, exploring the hidden charms of Port Antonio, one day at a time.
