A Day of Discovery in Port Antonio

Today was a day of contrasts, blending historical exploration with the vibrant flavors of Port Antonio. Olivia and I set out to delve into the area's past and experience its present, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From the crumbling grandeur of Folly Ruins to the depths of Nonsuch Cave and the lively dining scene, Port Antonio continued to reveal its many layers.

Our day began with a hearty Jamaican breakfast at Glen's Good Grub. I opted for the traditional ackee and saltfish, while Olivia enjoyed a plate of callaloo and dumplings. The warm, inviting atmosphere and friendly service made it the perfect start to our day. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the historical side of Port Antonio. Glen's is truly a gem, showcasing the rich flavors of Jamaican cuisine. From jerk chicken to savory curried goat, every plate is a testament to the island's culinary heritage.

Folly Ruins: Echoes of a Grand Past

Our first stop was the Folly Ruins, a site steeped in history and local legend. As an urban planner, I'm always fascinated by the stories behind architectural remains, and the Folly Ruins certainly had a compelling one. The ruins are what's left of a mansion built in 1905 by Alfred Mitchell for his wife Annie Tiffany. Mitchell, a businessman from Salem, Connecticut, and Annie Tiffany, heiress to the Tiffany fortune, fell in love with Port Antonio and decided to build their dream home here.

The mansion was designed as a replica of a Roman villa, boasting 60 rooms, marble floors, and state-of-the-art conveniences for the time, including a steam-powered generator, electric lights, and running water. However, legend has it that Mitchell, in his haste to impress his bride, used seawater to mix the concrete, leading to the mansion's eventual decay. While the legend might be a bit far-fetched, the ruins stand as a testament to ambition and the passage of time.

Walking through the skeletal remains of the mansion, Olivia and I imagined what life must have been like in its heyday. Despite its dilapidated state, the Folly Ruins exuded an aura of faded elegance. The views of the coastline were breathtaking, and it was easy to see why the Mitchells chose this location for their home. The property is now fenced off for safety, but it can still be viewed from the perimeter.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

We learned that the Mitchells lived in the house until 1911, when Alfred passed away. Annie then returned to the United States at the start of World War I, eventually selling the property. Over time, the mansion fell into disrepair, and in 1936, the roof collapsed. Today, the Folly Ruins serve as a popular spot for photoshoots and music videos, a reminder of its enduring appeal.

Before leaving Folly Point, we took a short detour to the Folly Lighthouse, constructed in 1888. The lighthouse, with its red and white colors, provided a striking contrast against the clear blue sky. It was a peaceful spot, offering panoramic views of the coastline and the Caribbean Sea.

Nonsuch Cave: A Journey Underground

Next on our itinerary was Nonsuch Cave, located a few kilometers southeast of Port Antonio. The drive itself was an adventure, taking us through winding roads and lush greenery. Nonsuch Cave is located within Athenry Gardens, a former coconut plantation and agricultural research center. Today, the gardens are a botanical paradise, showcasing a variety of exotic and native plant species.

Unfortunately, upon arrival, we discovered that Nonsuch Cave is currently closed for an unspecified period. While this was a disappointment, we were still able to appreciate the beauty of Athenry Gardens. The gardens offer stunning views of the coastline and the sea, and we enjoyed a leisurely stroll amidst the tropical flora.

From what I've read, Nonsuch Cave is a fascinating geological site, featuring nine separate chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is also home to a colony of bats, adding to its mysterious allure. Fossils of fish and other sea creatures found within the cave's limestone formations serve as evidence that Jamaica was once submerged beneath the sea. I hope that Nonsuch Cave reopens soon, as I would love to explore its underground wonders.

Lees Maxi Mart: A Taste of Local Life

Since our plans for Nonsuch Cave were thwarted, we decided to immerse ourselves in the local culture by visiting Lees Maxi Mart. Located in the heart of Port Antonio, Lees Maxi Mart is a bustling shopping destination that caters to both tourists and locals. As soon as we stepped inside, we were enveloped in a vibrant atmosphere, filled with the chatter of shoppers and the enticing aromas of local snacks.

Lees Maxi Mart offered a wide array of products, from fresh produce to household goods and Jamaican specialties. Olivia and I wandered through the aisles, sampling local delicacies and picking up souvenirs for our friends and family back home. I was particularly impressed by the selection of jerk seasoning, a must-have for anyone looking to recreate the flavors of Jamaica.

I learned that Lees Maxi Mart was operated by Patrick Lee, a well-known and respected businessman in Port Antonio. Sadly, Mr. Lee passed away recently, but his legacy as a kind-hearted philanthropist lives on. He was known for assisting schools and community groups, leaving a positive impact on the people of Port Antonio.

A Culinary Evening: Di Honeycomb and Di Hip Strip Ultra Lounge

As evening approached, our thoughts turned to dinner. We decided to start with a relaxed meal at Di Honeycomb Restaurant & Bar. This charming eatery is known for its warm hospitality and authentic Jamaican cuisine. We shared a plate of jerk chicken and some curried goat, savoring the rich flavors and spices. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff made for a delightful dining experience.

For a nightcap, we headed to Di Hip Strip Ultra Lounge, a vibrant spot known for its lively atmosphere and panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. Located on Folly Road, the lounge offered a breathtaking view of the coastline and Port Antonio town. We enjoyed a couple of signature cocktails while listening to some reggae music. The lounge was a perfect blend of modern design and Caribbean culture, creating an inviting space to unwind and socialize.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the diversity and richness of Port Antonio. From the echoes of the past at Folly Ruins to the flavors of the present in its local cuisine, this town has something to offer every traveler. Even though Nonsuch Cave was closed, the experience was still rewarding.

Tomorrow, we plan to venture into the Blue Mountains National Park for a day of hiking and coffee tasting at the Craighton Estate Blue Mountain Coffee Tour [If last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I'm looking forward to exploring the lush landscapes and savoring the world-renowned Blue Mountain coffee. It promises to be another unforgettable day in Jamaica.

It's moments like these, shared with Olivia, that make our travels so special. As an urban planner, I appreciate the history and architecture of the places we visit, but it's the people and the culture that truly make a destination come alive. Port Antonio has certainly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
