Exploring the Natural and Cultural Wonders of Pelion, Greece
Day 2: A Day of Steam and Serenity in Pelion
All aboard the Train of Pelion! Discovering breathtaking views and tranquil moments in Greece with Emily and Oliver. A day to remember!
Riding Through History and Finding Peace in Pelion
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the thrill of a historic railway journey with moments of quiet reflection amidst stunning natural beauty. Pelion continues to surprise and delight, offering experiences that cater to both the adventurous spirit and the soul seeking tranquility. It’s days like these that remind me why Emily and I love to travel, and why we’re so keen to share these experiences with Oliver.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tavern Pelion Geuseis Portaria. The warm and inviting atmosphere, coupled with the promise of authentic Greek cuisine, made it the perfect start. Emily opted for the local yogurt with honey and walnuts, while Oliver, ever the traditionalist, went for a classic omelet. I decided to try the lamb cutlets, and I must say, they were cooked to perfection. The flavors were robust and satisfying, setting us up perfectly for the day ahead. I must admit, I felt a pang of guilt not remembering to pack my sunglasses, squinting in the morning sun, but the delicious food quickly made me forget.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to catch the Train of Pelion, also known as Moutzouris. This historic steam train, with its narrow gauge railway, promised a unique journey through the heart of Pelion. The railway was built between 1894 and 1903, and it is one of the narrowest in the world. As we boarded at Ano Lechonia, I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time. The rhythmic chugging of the train, the whistle echoing through the hills, it was all incredibly evocative.

The journey itself was nothing short of spectacular. The train wound its way through dense forests, over stone bridges, and past rocky cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Pagasetic Gulf. Oliver was particularly fascinated by the De Chirico Bridge, a unique curved structure named after the railway's engineer. I found myself reflecting on the ingenuity and determination of those who built this railway so long ago. It’s amazing to think that the father of the surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico designed this railway. As a marine biologist, I’m usually more focused on coastal ecosystems, but today, I was captivated by the engineering marvel before me.
“The best view comes after the hardest climb.”
After about 90 minutes, we arrived in Milies, a traditional village known for its stone houses and cobbled streets. We took some time to explore the village, visiting the historic library and admiring the architecture. Emily, with her background as a history teacher, was in her element, sharing stories and facts about the region. Oliver, surprisingly, seemed genuinely interested, perhaps swayed by the charm of the village or the promise of lunch.
For lunch, we stopped at Loukoulos. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the food was delicious. I had some seafood which was very fresh. Emily and Oliver enjoyed it as well.

In the late afternoon, we drove to the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning landscape. As we reached the observation point, the view was simply breathtaking. The panoramic vista stretched across the verdant hills and shimmering Aegean Sea, creating a sense of awe and tranquility.

The iconic cross stood tall, a symbol of faith and hope, providing a perfect photo opportunity. We spent some time simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this moment with Emily and Oliver. It was a moment of connection, a reminder of the importance of family and the beauty of the world around us.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back down, the sky ablaze with vibrant colors. For dinner, we chose Meintani (Niki's Taverna). This charming taverna in Zagora promised an authentic Pelion dining experience, and it certainly delivered. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu featured traditional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients.

We savored every bite, reflecting on the day's adventures. The Train of Pelion, the stunning views from the observation point, the delicious food, it had all been simply perfect. As we sipped our wine, we made plans for tomorrow, a visit to Limnionas Beach. I’m looking forward to relaxing by the sea.
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we decided to check out the Red Nose Bar. This bar is located in Volos and is known for its cocktails and brunch. It has a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and reflection. Sipping a local beer, listening to the murmur of conversation around us, I felt a deep sense of contentment.

Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things, connecting with loved ones, and finding moments of peace and wonder in the world around us. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel excited for what tomorrow will bring. Perhaps I’ll even remember my sunglasses this time. Tomorrow we are off to Limnionas Beach, and I am very much looking forward to it! I think I will also check out Filokaliashandmadecreations.
