Embark on our Pelion adventure: breathtaking views, mythical trails, and delicious Greek flavors await in Portaria. #PelionGreece
In the Footsteps of Legends
Our Pelion adventure began today, and what a start it has been! After months of anticipation, Emily, Oliver, and I finally touched down in Greece, ready to explore the fabled landscapes of Pelion. The drive from Athens was smooth, and as we approached Pelion, the scenery transformed into a lush, mountainous paradise. Today was all about immersing ourselves in the local culture and natural beauty around Portaria, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
Our first stop was the viewpoint in Portaria. The drive up was a bit winding, but the views were more than worth it. From our vantage point, we could see the entire Pagasetic Gulf sparkling in the morning sun. The panoramic vista was breathtaking, offering a stunning introduction to the region's beauty. Emily, ever the history enthusiast, pointed out the historical significance of the area, while Oliver, with his keen eye for detail, captured some amazing photos. I must admit, even my weathered heart skipped a beat at the sheer magnificence of the landscape.

After soaking in the views, we were ready for a hearty breakfast. We headed to the Mountain Top Cafe, drawn in by its reputation for excellent food and a cozy atmosphere. Perched on a hill, the cafe offered more stunning panoramic views. I opted for a traditional Greek coffee and a savory pie, while Emily enjoyed a selection of local pastries, and Oliver devoured a pizza. The coffee was strong and flavorful, just the way I like it, and the food was delicious. The perfect start to a day of exploration!

With our bellies full, we set off on the Centaurs' Path, a hiking trail that promised a walk through mythology and nature. The trail starts near Portaria, and as we began our trek, the air was filled with the scent of pine and damp earth. It's easy to imagine those mythical creatures roaming these very hills. The path itself was well-maintained, though a bit rocky in places, so I was glad I remembered to pack my hiking boots. Emily, Oliver and I were all in agreement that the walk was relatively easy, and suitable for families.

The Centaurs' Path winds alongside a small stream, with wooden bridges crossing over the water at several points. The sound of the water was incredibly soothing, and the shade from the tall trees kept us cool even in the midday sun. Oliver was particularly fascinated by the small waterfalls and springs along the way. We stopped frequently to take photos and simply enjoy the tranquility of the forest. It was a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of Halifax, and a perfect way to reconnect with nature.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that allow you to step back in time and connect with both nature and legend.
After our hike, we were ready for lunch. We chose Synantisi, a restaurant known for its traditional Greek cuisine with a gourmet twist. The restaurant lived up to its reputation. We started with a selection of appetizers, including homemade tzatziki and giant baked beans. For the main course, I had the grilled steak, Emily chose the lamb stewed with verbena and white wine, and Oliver went for the traditional spetzofai (pork sausage with paprika and peppers). Every dish was bursting with flavor, and the ingredients were clearly fresh and locally sourced. The chef even came out to ask about our meal, which was a lovely personal touch.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the local shops in Portaria. We stumbled upon Mediterraneo Art Store, a charming shop filled with handmade crafts and artworks. The store is committed to supporting local artisans, and every piece tells a story. Emily was particularly taken with the intricate ceramics, while Oliver admired the beautifully crafted textiles. I picked up a small, hand-painted bowl as a memento of our trip. It's the kind of place where you can find a unique gift or a personal memento.

As evening approached, we made our way to KRITSA Restaurant for dinner. Located in the central square of Portaria, the restaurant boasts a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The staff was attentive and friendly, and the menu offered a diverse selection of dishes. I opted for the lamb, which was cooked to perfection, while Emily enjoyed the wild greens with fried eggs, and Oliver chose the beef fillet with wine sauce. The food was exceptional, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing evening.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the village square, enjoying the cool evening air. Portaria is a beautiful village, with its traditional architecture and lush greenery. The sound of running water from the many fountains added to the charm of the place. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Pelion.
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we made a quick stop at a local bakery for some late-night sweets. We picked up a selection of pastries to enjoy with our morning coffee tomorrow. As we settled in for the night, we reflected on our first day in Pelion. It had been a day filled with stunning views, delicious food, and fascinating history. We couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.
Tomorrow, we plan to ride the Train of Pilio from Ano Lehonia to Milies and visit the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. Hopefully, the weather will be as kind to us as it was today. Until then, goodnight from Pelion!
P.S. I almost forgot to mention, there's a theatrical performance called APOKENTROUSA at the Aloni Theater in Agios Georgios Nileias tonight. It explores women's experiences in society, which sounds intriguing. Maybe Emily and I will check it out if we have the energy!
