Exploring the Enchanted Forests of Yakushima with Friends
Day 1: First Day in Yakushima: Ancient Cedars and Culinary Delights
David and his friends arrive in Yakushima and immerse themselves in the island's natural beauty, enjoying local cuisine and market finds.
Embarking on a Yakushima Adventure
After what felt like an eternity of travel, swapping planes and ferries, my friends and I finally set foot on Yakushima. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a welcome change from the recycled air of the cabin. The island greeted us with open arms, promising an adventure that would be etched in our memories forever. The mix of sunshine and rain is quite something, but it just makes the green colours pop that much more!
Our first day was all about getting our bearings and soaking in the atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Knowing we hadn't booked any hotels, we were excited to embrace the nature around us and camp under the stars!
Arrival and First Impressions
The journey here was quite the experience. From Halifax to Tokyo, then a domestic flight to Kagoshima, and finally, the ferry to Yakushima. I must admit, lugging our camping gear across continents was a bit of a workout, but the anticipation of exploring this unique island kept our spirits high. Emily, ever the pragmatist, reminded me of the portable phone charger I'd forgotten – a rookie mistake for a seasoned traveler like myself. I made a mental note to pick one up at the first opportunity.
Stepping off the ferry, we were immediately struck by the sheer natural beauty of Yakushima National Park!

Breakfast at Yakushima Airport Restaurant
Our first order of business was breakfast. We headed to the Yakushima Airport Restaurant, a humble eatery that served up a hearty Japanese breakfast. I opted for the traditional set meal with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was simple, yet satisfying, and just what I needed to fuel up for the day's adventures. The others went for a mix of dishes, some more adventurous than others. It was great to enjoy a classic Japanese breakfast and was a great way to prepare for the day ahead.

Exploring Yakushima National Park
With our bellies full, we ventured into Yakushima National Park. As a marine biologist, I'm naturally drawn to coastal ecosystems, but the ancient forests of Yakushima have a unique allure. The park is home to some of Japan's oldest and largest cedar trees, some of which are over a thousand years old. Walking among these giants, I felt a sense of awe and humility, a reminder of the enduring power of nature.
We spent hours hiking through the park, marveling at the towering trees, the vibrant mosses, and the crystal-clear streams. The air was alive with the sound of birdsong, and the sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating a magical atmosphere. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the essence of this enchanted forest. I think I managed to get some great shots, although they don't do the real thing justice!
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where nature speaks louder than words.
As we hiked, I couldn't help but think about the delicate balance of this ecosystem. Yakushima's forests are not only beautiful but also incredibly important for biodiversity and climate regulation. It reinforced my commitment to environmental conservation and the need to protect these precious natural resources.
Lunch at Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant
By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We decided to try the local specialty: flying fish. Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that perfectly complemented the island's atmosphere. I am always keen to try the local delicacies, and this was a great opportunity.

I ordered the flying fish set meal, which included grilled flying fish, sashimi, and tempura. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the island's pristine waters. The sashimi was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the tempura was light and crispy. It was a culinary experience that truly captured the essence of Yakushima. Some of my friends were a bit more hesitant, but everyone agreed that it was very tasty!
Exploring Yakushima Market
After lunch, we made our way to Yakushima Market, eager to immerse ourselves in the local culture and find some unique souvenirs. The market was a bustling hub of activity, filled with vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handcrafted goods. The vibrant colours and exotic aromas were a feast for the senses.

I was particularly drawn to the local crafts, admiring the intricate woodwork and the delicate pottery. I picked up a few small items as gifts for Emily and Oliver, hoping they would appreciate a piece of Yakushima's artistry. I also stocked up on some local snacks, including tankan oranges and sweet potato cakes, perfect for our camping adventures.
Dinner at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant
As evening approached, we sought out a spot for dinner. We decided on the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, drawn in by its creative menu and inviting atmosphere. I was intrigued by the idea of trying some local venison, a dish I hadn't had before. The restaurant was cozy and filled with local art, adding to the experience.

I opted for the deer tataki, while others chose flying fish ramen and a venison steak. The deer tataki was a revelation – tender, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. It was a dish that showcased the island's unique culinary heritage. The others enjoyed their meals too, and we all agreed that it was a fantastic way to end our first day in Yakushima.
Embracing the Yakushima Vibe
As the day drew to a close, we found a secluded spot to set up our campsite. The stars twinkled above us, and the sound of the forest lulled us into a peaceful slumber. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible experience, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in our world.
Yakushima has already cast its spell on me. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. We're planning to hike the Shiratani Unsui Gorge, known for its moss-covered forests and the iconic Wilson's Stump. I've heard it's like stepping into a fairytale, and I'm eager to experience it for myself. I am particularly excited to see Wilson's Stump, as I have heard it is a must see attraction.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that this was just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure. I must say, I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's planned bar visit at Cafe & Bar RainTree. I have heard great things about it!
Yakushima is proving to be exactly the kind of trip I needed. Being surrounded by nature, experiencing new things with friends, and enjoying the local cuisine is a great experience. I'm already looking forward to writing about tomorrow!
