A Day of Serenity and Discovery

Today was all about soaking in the serene atmosphere and rich history of Nara. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this relatively small city. Aoife, Liam and I ventured out, eager to explore more of what Nara has to offer, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From ancient shrines to meticulously designed gardens, our day was a tapestry of cultural immersion and tranquil beauty.

Our first stop was the Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The approach to the shrine was magical, walking through Nara Park with its freely roaming deer, considered messengers of the gods. I must admit, it’s quite a unique experience to be surrounded by these gentle creatures as you make your way to a sacred site. It definitely beats the pigeons in Merrion Square back in Dublin! The shrine itself, founded in 768 AD by the Fujiwara clan, is striking with its vermilion columns and white walls. The hundreds of bronze lanterns hanging from the buildings and the thousands of stone lanterns lining the paths were truly captivating. I learned that these lanterns are only lit twice a year, during the Lantern Festivals in early February and mid-August, and I felt fortunate to be visiting during a time when the anticipation of such a spectacle was in the air.

The beauty of Nara lies not just in its historical monuments, but in the seamless blend of nature, spirituality, and the enduring spirit of its people.

Inside the shrine, we explored the inner buildings and learned about the deities enshrined there, including Takemikazuchi-no-Mikoto and Futsunushi-no-Mikoto. Kasuga Taisha has been rebuilt every 20 years since its founding in the Nara period, a tradition that reflects the Shinto concept of tokowaka, emphasizing renewal to maintain divine prestige. Aoife was particularly fascinated by the Kasuga Taisha Shinen Manyo Botanical Garden, located a short walk from the main complex. It displays about 250 kinds of plants described in the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest collection of poems. It was a lovely, peaceful spot, and a welcome respite from the summer heat.

Next on our itinerary was the Isuien Garden and Neiraku Museum. This garden, whose name means garden founded on water, is divided into two sections: a front garden dating back to the mid-17th century and a rear garden built in 1899. What struck me most was how the garden incorporates the surrounding landscape, using the technique of borrowed scenery to include Todaiji Temple's Nandaimon Gate and Mount Wakakusayama in its design. It felt as though the garden was not just a self-contained space, but a part of the wider natural world. The Neiraku Museum, included with the garden admission, houses a collection of ancient Chinese and Korean pottery, seals, and mirrors. As an antiques dealer, I always appreciate seeing well-preserved artifacts, and this museum was a treat.

Our final attraction for the day was Kofuku-ji, a temple with a history stretching back over 1,300 years. Founded in Kyoto in 669 and relocated to Nara in 710, it was the family temple of the powerful Fujiwara clan. The temple complex once had 175 buildings, though much has been lost to fires and warfare. However, what remains is impressive, particularly the five-story pagoda, which stands at 50.1 meters tall and is the second-tallest pagoda in Japan. We also visited the Kofuku-ji National Treasure Museum, which houses a remarkable collection of the temple's art. Liam, who is quite interested in history, was fascinated by the stories behind the various Buddhist statues and artifacts.

For lunch, we headed to Vegan Cafe Ramuna. This cozy cafe is run by a lovely woman who makes everything by hand. I opted for the bento box set, while Aoife tried the hamburger set. Everything was fresh, organic, and absolutely delicious. Even though I am not vegan, I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. It’s a charming little place, and we were happy to support a local business that clearly puts so much love and care into its food.

We started our day with breakfast at Naramachi Hiyori. Naramachi Hiyori is located in a charming neighborhood. I had a Kaiseki lunch, which included many small plates featuring vegetables with meat and fish. The staff was friendly and the service was good. The restaurant has a modern cozy atmosphere with a small courtyard.

For dinner, we decided to try Tonkatsu Ganko Nara. This restaurant specializes in tonkatsu, or breaded pork cutlets. I had the pork loin cutlet, while Aoife chose the chicken katsu. The cutlets were perfectly fried, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It was a satisfying and comforting meal, and a great way to end a day of exploring.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Nara, Bar.d. This bar offered a mix of entertainment, including darts and karaoke. It was a great place to unwind and socialize after a day of sightseeing. I enjoyed a glass of local sake while chatting with some of the other patrons. It’s always nice to experience the local nightlife and get a sense of the community.

As I reflect on today, I am struck by the seamless blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that Nara offers. From the sacred deer of Kasuga Taisha to the meticulously designed landscapes of Isuien Garden and the ancient artifacts of Kofuku-ji, every experience has been enriching and memorable. And tomorrow, we’re off to explore more of Nara’s treasures, including Horyu-ji, Yakushi-ji, and Toshodai-ji. I’m particularly excited to see Horyu-ji, one of the oldest wooden structures in the world. Until then, I’ll cherish the memories of today and look forward to another day of adventure in this captivating city.

Aoife reminded me as we were getting ready for bed that I forgot my travel adapter for Japan and my raincoat. I will need to buy those tomorrow.
