Exploring the Majestic Landscapes of Dades Valley, Morocco
Day 9: Farewell to Dades: Reflecting on the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs
Join David and Emily as they bid adieu to the enchanting Dades Valley, reminiscing about the sights, sounds, and tastes of Morocco.
A Final Embrace of the Dades Valley
As our Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had in the Dades Valley. It's hard to believe that nine days have already passed since Emily and I embarked on this journey. This morning, as I sit here with a cup of mint tea, the crisp November air carrying the scent of the Dades River, I can't help but feel a tinge of sadness mixed with immense gratitude. This valley has a way of seeping into your soul, leaving an indelible mark.
Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Dar Ahlam Dades hotel. The spread was a feast for the eyes and the stomach, featuring traditional Moroccan delights like Msemmen, a delicious crepe, local bread, and of course, the ubiquitous mint tea. The hotel itself was a gem, beautifully decorated and offering stunning views. It was the perfect way to start our last day in the valley.

With our bellies full and spirits high, Emily and I set out to explore the Dadés Gorges. The plan was to immerse ourselves in the majestic beauty of the gorge one last time. We decided to enlist the services of an official tour guide, hoping to gain a deeper understanding of the area's history and geology.

Our guide was a local Berber, a man with a wealth of knowledge and a passion for his homeland. He led us through the winding paths of the gorge, sharing stories of ancient kasbahs and the people who once lived there. He pointed out unique rock formations, explaining how centuries of erosion had sculpted the landscape into the breathtaking spectacle we see today.
The Dades Valley is more than just a destination; it's an experience that engages all your senses and leaves you with a profound appreciation for the beauty of nature and the richness of culture.
As we hiked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of the gorge. The towering red rock walls seemed to stretch endlessly into the sky, their colors shifting with the changing light. The Dades River snaked its way through the bottom of the gorge, a ribbon of life in this otherwise arid landscape. Emily, ever the history enthusiast, peppered our guide with questions about the Berber people and their traditions. She was fascinated by their resourcefulness and their ability to thrive in this harsh environment.
After a morning of exploration, we stopped for lunch at Auberge Miguirne chez Ali. This charming auberge is known for its exceptional hospitality and delicious food. We were greeted by the gracious hostess, who made us feel like we were guests in her own home. The food was incredible, a flavorful tagine that was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventures.

The afternoon was reserved for a bit of shopping. We stopped by SAFOUASHOP, a local store, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home. Emily was on the lookout for a traditional Berber carpet, while I was hoping to find some local spices to experiment with in my Halifax kitchen. We ended up buying a beautiful handwoven rug with intricate patterns and a vibrant array of colors. I also picked up a bag of Ras el Hanout, a complex spice blend that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. I’m already imagining the tagines I’ll be able to cook up back home!

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Hôtel - Restaurant BOUGAFER, where we had reservations for dinner. This charming hotel is known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and its warm, welcoming atmosphere. The meal was a fitting end to our Moroccan culinary journey. We started with a selection of salads, followed by a hearty tagine and finished with sweet pastries and mint tea. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

Looking back on our time in the Dades Valley, I am struck by the diversity of experiences we've had. From the dramatic landscapes of the Dadés Gorges to the warm hospitality of the Berber people, this region has something to offer everyone. Emily and I have been fortunate to witness the beauty and the charm of this corner of Morocco, and we will carry these memories with us always.
This trip also reminded me of how important it is to be prepared for anything. I was kicking myself for forgetting my portable phone charger and sunhat. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
As we prepare to leave tomorrow, heading back to Marrakech for our flight home, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. This journey has been more than just a vacation; it has been an opportunity to connect with a different culture, to appreciate the beauty of nature, and to create lasting memories with my wife. I know that we will both cherish these moments for years to come. The Dades Valley, with its thousand kasbahs and its stunning landscapes, will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
And as I always say, travel isn’t just about seeing new places, it’s about seeing the world with new eyes. Until next time, Dades Valley, goodbye.
The Dades Valley has truly captured our hearts, and though we must leave, we take with us a piece of its soul. Perhaps Oliver will be inspired by our travels and venture out on his own someday soon. For now, it's time to bid adieu to this magical place and prepare for the journey home.
