Sunday in San Gimignano: A Journey Through Time and Taste
Today was a quintessential San Gimignano day – a blend of history, culture, and, of course, the region's celebrated wine. Aoife and I set out to explore the town's hidden corners and iconic landmarks, eager to soak in the atmosphere of this Tuscan gem. It’s days like these that remind me why I fell in love with travel blogging – the chance to share these unique experiences with all of you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Spizzicheria Le Chicche Toscane. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy table. I ordered the pappardelle, while Aoife chose a selection of Tuscan cheeses. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The place was bustling, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to start their day with some good Tuscan food. I made a mental note to try and recreate the pappardelle when we get back to Dublin. I reckon a bit of fresh rosemary would do the trick.
After breakfast, we made our way to the Torre dei Becci. As one of the oldest towers in San Gimignano, it offered a glimpse into the town's medieval past. The tower is located near the ancient Arco dei Becci, providing a commanding view of both Via San Giovanni and Piazza della Cisterna. The climb was a bit challenging, especially on a full stomach, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. From our vantage point, the entire town unfolded before us – a tapestry of terracotta roofs, ancient walls, and rolling hills in the distance. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago when these towers were first built. Aoife, ever the librarian, was fascinated by the history of the Becci family, who were prominent merchants during San Gimignano's golden age.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to see it from above, to gain a new perspective on its history and its beauty.
Next on our itinerary was the Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Experience La Rocca. Now, you all know I appreciate a good tipple, and I was particularly excited to learn more about this renowned white wine. The Wine Experience is located within the Rocca, offering not only a tasting session but also a lesson in the history and production of Vernaccia. We opted for the masterclass tasting, which included five different Vernaccia wines paired with local snacks. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining the nuances of each wine and the unique characteristics of the local soil. Aoife, with her keen sense of smell, was particularly adept at identifying the various aromas – from citrus and almond to hints of honey. I must admit, I simply enjoyed the taste! It was fascinating to learn that Vernaccia di San Gimignano dates back to the 13th century and has even been mentioned in Dante's Inferno. The views from La Rocca were, of course, spectacular, adding to the overall experience. We ended up purchasing a bottle of our favorite Vernaccia to enjoy back at the hotel.

After our wine tasting, we strolled through the town, soaking in the atmosphere. We popped into Beconcini Tuscan Handmade, a charming shop filled with local crafts. Aoife was particularly taken with the hand-painted ceramics, while I admired the leather goods. It's the kind of place where you can find unique souvenirs that truly capture the essence of Tuscany. The shop has been around for over 50 years, and you can tell that the artisans take great pride in their work. We picked up a small ceramic bowl as a memento of our visit. I am thinking it would look great back in my antique shop in Dublin!

For lunch, we chose La Mangiatoia, a traditional Tuscan trattoria. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a menu featuring local specialties. I ordered the carbonara al tartufo, while Aoife opted for the bistecca alla fiorentina. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, showcasing the fresh, high-quality ingredients that Tuscany is known for. The carbonara was rich and creamy, with a generous shaving of black truffle. Aoife's steak was perfectly cooked, tender and flavorful. We shared a bottle of local Chianti, which complemented the meal perfectly. It was the kind of leisurely lunch that you can only truly enjoy in Italy, savoring each bite and each sip. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the prices were quite reasonable. I would highly recommend La Mangiatoia to anyone visiting San Gimignano.

In the afternoon, we visited the Museum of Sacred Art. Housed in the former Chaplains' dormitory, the museum displays a collection of religious artifacts and artworks from the region. As an antiques dealer, I always appreciate the opportunity to examine historical objects up close. The museum included sculptures, canvases, terracottas, silverware, and liturgical furnishings. Aoife was particularly interested in the illuminated psalm books and antiphonaries by Niccolò di Ser Sozzo and Lippo Vanni. I was drawn to the wooden sculptures dating from the 14th century. It was fascinating to see how art and religion have intertwined throughout the history of San Gimignano. The museum provided a deeper understanding of the town's spiritual identity and cultural heritage. It was quiet and contemplative, a welcome contrast to the bustling streets outside.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Il Pino for dinner. This restaurant is located near the Porta di San Matteo and Piazza di Sant'Agostino. We sat in one of the three dining rooms, which featured a rustic style with exposed brick, medieval arches, and cross vaults. The ambiance was perfect for a romantic dinner. The menu featured a range of Tuscan specialties, and we decided to try the chef's tasting menu. Each course was a delight, showcasing the flavors of the region. The service was impeccable, and the wine list was extensive. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day in San Gimignano. After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll back to Hotel Leon Bianco, savoring the peaceful atmosphere of the town at night. The towers were illuminated, casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets.

Tomorrow, we are planning to explore the Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, Torre Grossa, Casa Santa Fina and Piazza Sant'Agostino. I am particularly looking forward to climbing the Torre Grossa for more panoramic views. Before that, we are having breakfast at Osteria San Giovanni, lunch at La Corte del Vinaio, and dinner at Ristorante La Stella. We also plan to visit the bar, Enjoy... drink food life.
San Gimignano continues to surprise and enchant me. It's a town that seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty. Each day brings new discoveries and new experiences. I am so grateful to be able to share this journey with Aoife and with all of you. Until tomorrow, arrivederci!
