A Day Among Towers

Today, Aoife and I truly immersed ourselves in the heart of San Gimignano, a place where time seems to stand still. It’s remarkable how this medieval town has preserved its character, offering a tangible connection to centuries past. As an antiques dealer, I find myself particularly drawn to places like this, where history isn't just read about, but felt in every cobblestone and seen in every ancient stone.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Osteria San Giovanni. The reviews I had read beforehand were spot on; the atmosphere was terrific, and the decor added to the charm. We enjoyed some lovely Italian coffee and pastries, fueling up for a day of exploration. Aoife, ever the librarian, was eager to dive into the historical aspects of the town, while I was keen on observing the architectural details and the stories they whispered.

First on our itinerary was the Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, Torre Grossa. The Palazzo Comunale, or Town Hall, was built in 1288 and houses the Civic Museums. We decided to get the San Gimignano Pass to access the Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, Torre Grossa, and other museums. The climb to the top of Torre Grossa was, let's just say, a bit more challenging than I anticipated. Those medieval steps are not designed for comfort! However, the panoramic view from the top was absolutely worth it. From that vantage point, San Gimignano unfolded beneath us, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops and rolling Tuscan hills. I could almost imagine what it would have been like to stand guard there centuries ago, watching for approaching enemies or simply taking in the beauty of the landscape. Aoife was thrilled, snapping photos and pointing out various landmarks with the enthusiasm only a librarian could muster. We spent a good hour up there, simply absorbing the atmosphere and committing the scene to memory. The Palazzo Comunale itself was fascinating, filled with art and history. We saw the famous fresco cycles and the chivalric-inspired paintings in the Dante Room. It’s amazing to think that Dante Alighieri himself visited this very room. As a history enthusiast, I was in my element.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Next, we made our way to Casa Santa Fina. This site is dedicated to Saint Fina, a local figure revered for her piety and miraculous story. The Casa reflects the classic medieval style that characterizes San Gimignano. Saint Fina was born in San Gimignano in 1238, and she is especially venerated in the town. According to legend, Saint Gregory the Great appeared to her to predict her death. It was a somber yet inspiring place, reminding us of the importance of faith and community in this town's history. The Spezieria di Santa Fina was also fascinating. Founded in the mid-13th century, it purchased and produced medicines for use in the hospital and for sale. The installation reproduces the layout and original aromatics of the Spezieria, and includes a reconstruction of a garden of aromatic plants.

Afterward, we strolled through Piazza Sant'Agostino. This square is a vibrant gathering place, where you can immerse yourself in the Italian atmosphere. We admired the architecture and soaked up the sun. We also visited the nearby Church of Sant'Agostino. The church is known for its stunning frescoes. We took a moment to admire the intricate details of the architecture.

Dinner was at Ristorante La Stella. The reviews mentioned it was popular with the locals, and that's always a good sign. The atmosphere was friendly, and the food was delicious. I had a fantastic pizza, and Aoife enjoyed a traditional pasta dish. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

San Gimignano is more than just a picturesque town; it's a living, breathing testament to the past. As we walked back to Hotel Leon Bianco, the towers silhouetted against the night sky, I felt a profound sense of connection to this place. It's a feeling I hope to carry with me long after we leave.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, Piazza di San Lorenzo, and the Beautiful View. I am looking forward to another day of discovery in this remarkable town. I am particularly excited to see the views from Piazza di San Lorenzo, and Aoife is looking forward to seeing the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino.

I’m also thinking about Liam. He’s always been fascinated by history, and I know he’d love wandering these ancient streets. Perhaps next time, we’ll bring him along. For now, though, Aoife and I are savoring this time together, exploring the medieval marvels of San Gimignano. The town truly comes alive in June, with events like the Ferie delle Messi adding to the vibrant atmosphere. It is a reminder that even in the most historical of settings, life continues to evolve and celebrate.

As I close out this entry, I raise a glass to history, to travel, and to the simple joys of discovering the world with the one you love. Until tomorrow, arrivederci from San Gimignano!
