Mirror Lakes and Highland Flavors

Today was a day of serene beauty and delightful culinary experiences here in Landmannalaugar. Emily and I ventured out to explore some of the region's stunning lakes and treat ourselves to the local cuisine. It was a perfect blend of natural wonders and gastronomic pleasures.

The morning started with a hearty breakfast at The Food Truck Company. I opted for a traditional Icelandic breakfast – skyr with berries and a side of rye bread. It was the perfect fuel for our day of exploration. Emily, ever the fan of simplicity, enjoyed a croissant with a strong coffee. Fuelled up, we set off towards Kýlingavatn lake. The drive itself was an experience, with the rugged landscape stretching out before us.

As we approached Kýlingavatn, the sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking.

The lake was like a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and craters with perfect clarity. The air was still, and the only sound was the gentle lapping of water against the shore. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos, trying to capture the ethereal beauty of the scene. The mountains surrounding the lake are beautiful and remote. I can see why it is a favourite place for photographers. It's easy to see why this is a favourite place for photographers. The still water provides the perfect mirror image.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the quietest moments, in the stillness of a lake reflecting the grandeur of the mountains.

Emily and I spent a good hour just wandering along the shoreline, soaking in the tranquility. It was a welcome contrast to the more strenuous hikes we've been doing. I found myself reflecting on our journey so far, the incredible landscapes we've witnessed, and the sense of peace that comes with being immersed in nature. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate the simple things in life.

Next on our itinerary was Danau Frostastaoavatn. This lake was larger than Kýlingavatn, and the surrounding landscape was more dramatic. The lake is picturesque and set in the heart of Iceland. The wind was a bit stronger here, creating ripples on the water's surface, but it only added to the wild beauty of the place. We took a short hike along one of the trails, enjoying the panoramic views.

For lunch, we stopped at Kantina. I opted for the lamb stew, a classic Icelandic dish. It was hearty and flavorful, the perfect comfort food after a morning in the cool air. Emily chose the Arctic char, which she declared was fresh and delicious. We shared a slice of skyr cake for dessert, a sweet and tangy treat that was the perfect ending to our meal.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of local shopping. We visited the Woolmarket Local Store. I was on the lookout for a warm Icelandic sweater, and Emily wanted to find a unique souvenir to take back home to Oliver. The store was a treasure trove of handmade crafts, from intricately knitted sweaters to delicate pottery. We spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, chatting with the friendly owner, and admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

I finally settled on a cozy grey sweater with a traditional Icelandic pattern, while Emily found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl. We both felt good supporting the local economy and taking home a little piece of Iceland with us. It’s these kinds of places that give a real feel for the local culture.

As evening approached, we made our way to Hvönn Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is known for its modern twist on traditional Icelandic food, and we were eager to try it. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, with a touch of rustic charm. For starters, I had the smoked arctic charr, while Emily chose the soup of the day. Both were excellent, bursting with fresh, local flavors. For our main courses, I opted for the slow-cooked lamb, and Emily chose the fish of the day. My lamb was tender and flavorful, with a hint of orange-kombucha marmalade that added a unique twist. Emily's fish was perfectly cooked, served with potatoes and seasonal vegetables. We both agreed that it was one of the best meals we've had on this trip.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll back to our campsite, enjoying the long Icelandic twilight. The sky was ablaze with color, and the air was crisp and clean. We reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and flavors of Landmannalaugar.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Danau Langisjor and Hveravellir. I've heard that Danau Langisjor is one of the most beautiful lakes in Iceland, and I'm eager to see it for myself. Hveravellir is a geothermal area known for its hot springs and colorful landscape. It promises to be another day of stunning scenery and unforgettable experiences. We might even stop for a cocktail at Cocktail Lounge Kormáks & Skjaldar. Until then, goodnight from Landmannalaugar.

As I sit here in our tent, the wind gently buffeting the canvas, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. This trip has been everything I hoped for and more. The landscapes are breathtaking, the people are friendly, and the food is delicious. I'm so grateful to be sharing this experience with Emily, and I know that these memories will stay with us for a lifetime. I'm also glad that Oliver is getting to see the world through my blog.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but think about the guidebook on Icelandic flora that I forgot to pack. It would have been fascinating to learn more about the unique plant life of this region. Oh well, perhaps next time.

One thing I won’t forget next time is extra batteries for my camera!
