Day 2: A Day of Douro Delights: Vineyards, Views, and Culinary Treasures
Immerse yourself in the Douro Valley's beauty with Quinta do Bomfim, stunning views from Miradouro Casal de Loivos, & gourmet delights.
Douro Valley Dreams Realized
Today was everything I imagined and more. The Douro Valley unfolded before us in all its glory, a tapestry of terraced vineyards clinging to steep hillsides. It was a day of sensory indulgence, from the rich aromas of port wine to the breathtaking vistas that seemed to stretch on forever. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share these experiences with all of you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bistro Terrace - Quinta do Tedo. The views overlooking the Tedo River were stunning, even in December, and the food was delicious. Emily and I enjoyed some coffee while taking in the scenery.

Next up was Quinta do Bomfim, a winery steeped in history and tradition. The estate has been farmed by the Symington family for five generations. We opted for a tour of the vineyards and winery, learning about the intricate process of port wine production. The old Bomfim lodge, built in 1896, is truly remarkable. The vineyards overlooking the Douro River were amazing.

The tasting experience was wonderful. Sipping on their renowned Vintage Ports while overlooking the Douro River was an experience I won't soon forget. The design of the rooms with the wood beam ceilings and natural light was lovely. I even picked up a bottle of their Late Bottled Vintage to add to my growing collection back in Halifax. I'm hoping it will remind me of this trip when I'm back home.
The Douro Valley isn't just a destination; it's an experience that seeps into your soul, leaving you forever changed by its beauty and charm.
After Quinta do Bomfim, we drove up to Miradouro Casal De Loivos. The drive itself was an adventure, with narrow, winding roads that tested my driving skills. But the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. From the observation deck, we could see the Douro River snaking its way through the valley, surrounded by terraced vineyards as far as the eye could see. It was truly a sight to behold. I could see several Douro Quintas including Quinta das Carvalhas, Quinta da Roêda, Quinta da Foz and Quinta de la Rosa.

For lunch, we ventured to Toca da Raposa, a local restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We started with some local appetizers, including alheira and arroz de salpicão, before indulging in the roasted pork leg. It was the perfect hearty meal to fuel our afternoon adventures.

Before dinner, we made a stop at Douro Gourmet, a local shop that showcases the region's culinary delights. I picked up some local cheeses, cured meats, and, of course, more wine. These will make great souvenirs for friends and family back home, and perhaps a little something for myself too!

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Douro In for dinner. The restaurant had a modern and stylish ambiance, and the menu featured a creative take on traditional Portuguese dishes. I decided to try the grilled octopus, while Emily opted for the roasted cod. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, and the wine pairings were spot on.

The weather in the Douro Valley in December is refreshingly cool. While there is a chance of rain, the totals are surprisingly low. The average daytime highs hover around 12–14°C (mid–50s °F), with nights dropping to 4–7°C (low–40s °F).
As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of the Douro Valley. It's a place that truly captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, where we'll be exploring the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional and Quinta da Pacheca. We'll also be stopping by Petiscaria Douro Bar for a drink.
I'm also reminded that I forgot to pack sunscreen and a portable phone charger. I will need to buy those tomorrow!
Before I turn in for the night, I wanted to share a little anecdote. During our visit to Quinta do Bomfim, I overheard a tour guide telling a group about the history of port wine. He explained that back in the day, the wines were transported down the Douro River in boats called rabelos. These boats were specifically designed to navigate the treacherous rapids and narrow gorges of the river. It was a fascinating story, and it made me appreciate the rich history and traditions of the Douro Valley even more.
Good night from the Douro Valley!
