Exploring the Wine and Wonders of Douro Valley with Friends
Day 3: Nature's Embrace and Quintessential Flavors: A Day of Douro Delights
Immersing in Douro's natural beauty at Parque Natural do Douro Internacional and savoring exquisite wines at Quinta da Pacheca.
A Day of Discoveries in the Douro Valley
Today was a symphony of nature and nurture, a deep dive into the heart of the Douro Valley that left me feeling both invigorated and utterly content. From the rugged landscapes of Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, every moment was a testament to the region’s diverse offerings. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable shores of Halifax for the winding roads of the world.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Da Azenha, a cozy, family-run establishment known for its traditional Portuguese dishes. It was a bit of a drive, but Emily always says the journey is half the fun, and she was right. The drive there was beautiful. Fuelled up with strong coffee and local pastries, we set off towards the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional.
The Parque Natural do Douro Internacional is a place where the raw beauty of nature takes centre stage. As a marine biologist, I’m naturally drawn to aquatic ecosystems, but there’s something equally captivating about the dramatic cliffs and sweeping vistas of this natural park. The park straddles the border between Portugal and Spain, and the views overlooking the Douro River are simply breathtaking. I spent a good chunk of time simply observing the landscape, trying to capture the essence of the place with my camera. I was really hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the park's famed wildlife. Although I didn't spot any wolves or wildcats, I did manage to see several species of birds, including a falcon soaring high above the gorge.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the natural world.
After our invigorating hike, it was time to indulge in the Douro Valley's other great treasure: its wine. We made our way to Quinta da Pacheca, one of the region’s most renowned estates. As we drove through the gates, we were immediately struck by the beauty of the place. The vineyards stretched out before us, a sea of green and gold under the December sun.
Quinta da Pacheca is not just a winery; it’s an experience. The estate offers a range of activities, from wine tastings and tours to cooking classes and even accommodation in giant wine barrels. We opted for a tour of the vineyards and a tasting of their premium wines. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing the history of the estate and the secrets of Douro winemaking. Of course, no visit to a Portuguese vineyard would be complete without sampling the local produce. We tasted a variety of Quinta da Pacheca's wines, each one a testament to the unique terroir of the Douro Valley. I found myself particularly drawn to their Grande Reserva Touriga Nacional, with its complex aromas of dark fruit and spice. Emily, on the other hand, preferred the Vinha da Rita, a rich and structured wine with notes of olives and herbs.
After our tasting, we were feeling peckish, so we headed to Veladouro for lunch. Located right by the Pinhão docks, the restaurant offers fresh, traditional food with friendly service. The restaurant is known for its traditional cooking and river and sea products. I had some grilled fish, while Emily enjoyed a hearty meat dish. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the stunning views of the vineyards and the river.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Val Moreira for dinner. The views were breathtaking. The restaurant is located on the Quinta de Val Moreira, offering panoramic views of the Douro and Tedo rivers. The menu is a celebration of the Douro’s flavors, with dishes like black pork cheeks, octopus à lagareiro, and cod fritters with bean rice. I opted for the black pork cheeks, which were cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. Emily chose the octopus, which was equally delicious. For dessert, we shared a slice of cheesecake with salted caramel sauce and lemon ice cream.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by Petiscaria Douro Bar for a nightcap. This charming little bar offers great Portuguese traditional food at an affordable price. We enjoyed a glass of local wine while soaking in the lively atmosphere.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Quinta do Vesúvio and Miradouro Vale de Mendiz. We’ll start the day with breakfast at Cozinha da Clara, followed by lunch at Restaurante Vista do Douro. In the evening, we’ll have dinner at Writer's Place and visit the Kopke Wine House.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am reminded of the simple joys of travel: the beauty of nature, the warmth of human connection, and the pleasure of discovering new flavors. The Douro Valley has a way of captivating the senses and nourishing the soul. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
