Day 2: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Florence's Historical Heart
Immerse yourself in the historical wonders of Florence, from Palazzo Vecchio to the Basilica di Santa Croce, with captivating stories.
A Day Amongst Giants
Florence continues to enchant, and today was no exception. I ventured into the heart of the city, camera in hand, ready to soak in the rich history and vibrant culture that permeates every corner. With Aoife and Liam by my side, I knew it would be another day filled with discovery and shared memories.
Our day began, as most good days do in Italy, with a hearty breakfast. We found ourselves at Le Cappelle Medicee Restorante, a charming spot near the Medici Chapels. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries filled the air, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. It was a delightful start, fueling us for the adventures that lay ahead. The ambience was lovely [exotic and pleasant], and the staff was professional and welcoming.

Our first stop was the magnificent Palazzo Vecchio. As an antiques dealer, I'm always drawn to places steeped in history, and this palace is a treasure trove. Originally commissioned in 1299, it has been the seat of Florentine government for centuries. Standing in Piazza della Signoria, gazing up at the imposing structure, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The sheer scale and grandeur of the palace are breathtaking. The statues at the entrance, including a replica of Michelangelo's David, stand guard, testaments to the city's artistic prowess.

Explore the majestic Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's historic town hall, filled with art, rich history, and stunning views of the city.
We stepped inside, eager to explore the opulent interiors. The Salone dei Cinquecento, with its intricate frescoes and gilded ceiling, was particularly impressive. It's hard to believe that this hall was once used for meetings and celebrations; now, it's a museum showcasing the city's artistic legacy. Wandering through the various rooms, I was struck by the sheer amount of history contained within these walls. From the Apartments of the Elements to the Hall of Geographical Maps, each space offered a glimpse into Florence's past.
Florence is a city where history, art, and culture intertwine, creating an atmosphere that is both inspiring and captivating.
Leaving Palazzo Vecchio, we strolled through Piazza della Signoria, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling square. The Fountain of Neptune, with its imposing figure of the sea god, was a sight to behold. The square itself is a living museum, filled with statues and monuments that tell the story of Florence's past. It's a place where history comes alive, where you can almost hear the echoes of the past.
Next on our itinerary was the Basilica of Santa Croce, the principal Franciscan church in Florence. Located on Piazza di Santa Croce, it's a short walk from Piazza della Signoria. As we approached the basilica, I was struck by its serene beauty. The façade, with its intricate details and soaring arches, is a testament to the city's architectural prowess. This is the largest Franciscan church in the world. Legend says that Santa Croce was founded by St. Francis himself. The construction of the current church, to replace an older building, was begun on May 12, 1294, possibly by Arnolfo di Cambio, and paid for by some of the city's wealthiest families. It was consecrated in 1442 by Pope Eugene IV. The building's design reflects the austere approach of the Franciscans.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the basilica's solemn atmosphere. The soaring ceilings and stained-glass windows create a sense of reverence, while the numerous tombs and monuments serve as a reminder of the city's rich history. Santa Croce is known as the Temple of Italian Glories, as it houses the remains of some of Italy's most illustrious figures, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. As I wandered through the basilica, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to these great minds. It was humbling to stand in the presence of such greatness, to pay homage to those who had shaped the course of history.
After a day of exploring Florence's historical landmarks, we were ready for a culinary adventure. Following a recommendation, we secured a table at La Giostra for lunch. The restaurant is cozy and charming. When they sat us at our table, they handed us a complimentary glass of prosecco. After we placed our order, we were given a free platter of antipasto. We enjoyed all our selections. We had a terrific time and felt it was a lively experience. If you decide to go, you should make reservations ahead of time unless you're willing to wait at an hour or so.

As soon as you step inside, you are greeted by an array of captivating artwork that adorns the walls, creating an inspiring backdrop for relaxation. The bar is particularly popular among locals and tourists alike, making it a great social hub where you can meet people from all walks of life. The drink menu at Antico Caffè del Moro is a highlight, featuring a wide selection of cocktails, wines, and coffee blends. Our final culinary experience was at Cantinetta delle Terme for dinner. The food was delicious and the staff was very kind. This small restaurant is quite inviting and the food is amazing. The menu has something for all tastes. We had a mid-range bottle of red, beautifully presented by one of the waiters who clearly knew how to treat a bottle of wine. The atmosphere is that of a classic tavern with vintage signs.
