A Day of Reflection and Renewal

Today was a day of deep reflection and physical exertion, perfectly embodying the spirit of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. As we ventured through ancient parks and challenging trails, I felt a profound connection to the countless pilgrims who walked these paths before me. The blend of natural beauty and spiritual significance made for an unforgettable experience, one that I'm eager to share.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sansaro Cafe. Aoife and I enjoyed the local coffee blend, which was the perfect pick-me-up before a day of hiking. Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried a traditional Japanese pastry, declaring it a delightful start to the day. It's funny, you know, even after all these years, I still find myself surprised by Liam's willingness to try new things; reminds me of myself when I was his age, backpacking through Europe with nothing but a map and a thirst for adventure. This cafe is known for its emphasis on natural, high-quality ingredients. It's a cozy spot, and I can understand why it’s a favorite among hikers. The staff were incredibly friendly, offering tips for our journey, which is always a bonus.

Fueled up, we headed to Kumano Kodo Park, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the region. The park itself is a part of Yoshino-Kumano National Park. The park was lovely, offering a tranquil space to appreciate the lush landscapes of the Kii Peninsula. We spent a couple of hours wandering through the park, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. The air was fresh and clean, and the scenery was simply breathtaking. It's amazing how a simple walk in nature can clear the mind and rejuvenate the spirit. It reminded me of the gardens back in Dublin, though on a much grander scale. I even managed to snap a few photos, hoping to capture the essence of the park's serene atmosphere.

Next on our itinerary was the Kumano Kodo Dainichietsu trailhead, a path known for its challenging ascent. I must admit, I felt a bit apprehensive as we approached the trailhead. The path is known to be steep. I was quickly reminded that the Kumano Kodo is not just a walk in the park; it's a true pilgrimage, a test of both physical and mental endurance. It's a climb and then descent over a small mountain pass. The trail was indeed challenging, with steep, uneven steps that tested our stamina. Aoife, with her usual grace, navigated the path with relative ease, while Liam bounded ahead, eager to conquer the next incline. I found myself lagging behind, my knees protesting with every step. But I pressed on, driven by a sense of determination and the knowledge that countless pilgrims had walked this same path for centuries.

The true beauty of the Kumano Kodo lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the profound sense of connection it fosters with history, nature, and oneself.

After a few hours of strenuous hiking, we made our way to lunch at Hinoki Steak House. This restaurant has a rich history spanning over half a century. I opted for the Kumano beef hamburger steak, a local specialty that came highly recommended. The hamburger steaks are made from 100% Kumano beef. It was absolutely delicious, a welcome reward after our challenging hike. Aoife chose the tuna hamburg steak, while Liam, ever the meat lover, went for the Wagyu steak. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere. It reminded me of some of the old establishments back in Montpelier, Vermont, where the food was simple but hearty, and the service was always warm and welcoming.

In the late afternoon, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing break at KUMANOYASAI CAFE. This cafe is nestled along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail. It's a cozy haven that captivates visitors with its warm ambiance and delectable menu. We enjoyed some refreshing drinks and delicious pastries, savoring the peaceful surroundings. The cafe has a rustic charm with modern touches. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of hiking. I particularly enjoyed chatting with the staff, who were eager to share their knowledge of the local area.

For dinner, we opted for a casual meal at Sukiya R42 Kumano. I chose the classic gyudon. It was a comforting and satisfying end to a day filled with physical and spiritual exploration. Sukiya R42 Kumano offers delicious meals in a cozy setting. We enjoyed the family-friendly atmosphere. It's a great place to experience authentic Japanese cuisine.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared. Walking the Kumano Kodo is more than just a hike; it's a journey of self-discovery, a chance to connect with nature and history, and a reminder of the importance of perseverance. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to visit Tsubo-yu and the Fukusada-no-Oicho Large Gingko Tree. I hear Tsubo-yu is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan. I'm sure it will be a welcome treat after another day of hiking. And who knows, maybe I'll even find a few more antiques along the way.

Until tomorrow,
David

P.S. I almost forgot! I did manage to find a small, antique map of the Kumano region at a local shop today. It's not in the best condition, but it's a fascinating piece of history, and I'm eager to add it to my collection back in Dublin.
