Solo Adventure in the Majestic Geirangerfjord
Day 11: Farewell to Geirangerfjord: Reflecting on Norway's Majestic Beauty
Reflecting on the awe-inspiring landscapes of Geirangerfjord, a perfect ending to my solo journey through Norway's natural wonders.
A Fond Farewell to Geiranger
As my solo adventure in Norway draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past eleven days. Geirangerfjord, with its dramatic landscapes and serene beauty, has been the perfect final stop. It’s amazing how a place can leave such a lasting impression, and I’m already planning my return.
My last day began with a hearty breakfast at Låna Bistro. The bistro, which I believe used to be called Friaren Bistro, offered a delightful selection of local treats, and I savored every bite while enjoying the picturesque view of the fjord. It was a perfect way to start the day, fueling up for the adventures ahead.

After breakfast, I decided to visit Geiranger Skysslag. I learned that Geiranger Skysslag AS is the name of the transport company who own Dalsnibba. The drive up was an experience in itself, with winding roads offering panoramic views at every turn. Reaching the top, I was rewarded with a vista that truly took my breath away. From this vantage point, the Geirangerfjord unfolded beneath me, a tapestry of blue waters and verdant slopes. It was easy to see why this spot is known as one of Europe's highest fjord views accessible by road. The sheer drop of around 500 meters beneath you and a mountain breeze blowing gently from below, you'll feel like you're floating. The skywalk is located on the Dalsnibba mountain at an elevation of 1,500 metres with an iron grid floor and glass guard rail. The Geiranger Skycafé served lunch, pastries and coffee which was great. I was also able to buy a few souvenirs and casual wear at the shop.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are those we stumble upon unexpectedly, enriching our journey in ways we never imagined.
Next on my list was the Holebroa Waterfall. I drove along the scenic route, approximately 10 km from the center of Geiranger, keeping an eye out for the Fv63 road. I spotted Holebroa Waterfall on my left side as I approached a viewpoint area. The waterfall cascaded down the rocks, surrounded by lush greenery. The sound of the water was incredibly soothing, and I spent some time simply soaking in the tranquility of the scene. It was a refreshing contrast to the more crowded viewpoints, offering a moment of peaceful contemplation.

Before leaving Geiranger, I stopped by Geiranger Tourist Information v/ Visit Geiranger AS. I picked up a few maps and brochures, already plotting potential hikes and sights for my next visit. The staff were incredibly helpful, sharing local insights and tips that I knew would come in handy. It’s always a pleasure to connect with people who are passionate about their home and eager to share its beauty with others.

For lunch, I ventured to Fiskekaka Geiranger, a local fast-food spot known for its traditional fish cakes. The owner of the restaurant was very friendly and accommodating, and I was able to enjoy their specialties. The fish cake, made from high-quality local fish and served with traditional accompaniments was delicious. It was a satisfying and authentic taste of Norway's coastal cuisine, exactly what I was hoping for. I savored every bite while enjoying the stunning vistas.

In the late afternoon, I took a drive to Hellesylt. The village, nestled at the head of the Sunnylvsfjorden, exuded a charm of its own. As I strolled through the village, I couldn't help but notice the beautifully restored old farmhouses scattered around the hills and mountains. Hellesylt has retained its idyllic charm despite more than 200,000 tourists and 100 cruise ships visiting annually. I paused to admire the Hellesylt Waterfall, a powerful cascade that seemed to embody the raw energy of the Norwegian landscape. I also learned that Hellesylt was used as a backdrop for the fictional city of Kattegat in the tv-series Vikings and that the 1991 Icelandic film The White Viking was shot in Hellesylt.

My final dinner in Geiranger was at the Grande Fjord Hotel. The hotel was built in 1996, however it has been refurnished and renovated in 2018 and expanded with a new building in 2024. The Grande Fjord Hotel is a family owned and family run, 4-star boutique hotel situated only 100 meters from the World Heritage Geiranger Fjord. I enjoyed a delicious meal while overlooking the fjord. The Grande Fjord Hotel is located 2km away from the center of Geiranger, which gave me peace and quiet and distance myself from the crowds. The Grande Fjord Hotel was the perfect way to reflect on my journey and savor the last moments of my Norwegian adventure.

As I prepare to leave tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I’ve had. From the bustling streets of Oslo to the serene beauty of Geirangerfjord, Norway has captured my heart. The landscapes have been awe-inspiring, the people warm and welcoming, and the memories unforgettable. This solo trip has been a journey of self-discovery and appreciation, and I know that the lessons I’ve learned and the sights I’ve seen will stay with me for a lifetime.
Aoife, my wife, would have loved this trip. I’ll be sure to bring her back here someday. Perhaps we can explore the hiking trails together, or even try our hand at kayaking in the fjord. And I know Liam, my son, would be thrilled by the adventurous spirit of this place. Maybe he and I can plan a father-son trip in the future, conquering the mountains and discovering hidden gems together.
Tomorrow, I’ll be heading back to Dublin, my mind already buzzing with ideas for future blog posts. I can’t wait to share my experiences with my readers and inspire them to embark on their own adventures. Until then, farewell Geirangerfjord, and thank you for the memories.
