Chasing Views and Brews in Geiranger

Another day in Geiranger, and another opportunity to be utterly captivated by the raw, untamed beauty of Norway. Leaving Dublin behind for this solo trip was exactly what I needed. There’s something incredibly freeing about exploring a place like this on your own, setting your own pace, and soaking in the scenery without distraction. Today was all about scenic drives, stunning viewpoints, and a little bit of local flavor.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Naustkroa Restaurant. I opted for some traditional fare – perfectly cooked fish, which set me up perfectly for a day of exploration. The restaurant had a lovely, unpretentious vibe, and it was clear from the chatter around me that it's a local favorite. Fuelled up and ready to go, I set off to tackle the famed Turistveg: Geirangervegen (Scenic road).

The drive along Geirangervegen is nothing short of spectacular. As the road winds its way up the mountainside, each turn reveals a new, breathtaking vista. The Geirangerfjord itself is a constant companion, its deep blue waters contrasting sharply with the lush green hills that rise on either side. It's easy to see why this area is a UNESCO World Heritage site; the natural beauty is simply overwhelming. I stopped at several viewpoints along the way, each offering a unique perspective on the fjord and the surrounding landscape. The road itself is an attraction, with its steep inclines and hairpin bends adding an element of excitement to the journey. I found myself pulling over frequently, not just to admire the views, but also to capture them with my camera. I really must remember to buy a new portable phone charger for my next trip, I am always running out of battery!

The beauty of Geiranger isn't just in its landscapes, but in the sense of peace and wonder it instills in those who wander through it.

Next on my list was Vesterasfjellet (Løsta), specifically Løsta viewpoint. The drive there was an adventure in itself, navigating narrow, winding roads that climbed ever higher into the mountains. Once I reached the parking area, it was a relatively short hike to the viewpoint. The trail was well-marked, but definitely a bit steep in places, but nothing this 55 year old couldn't handle. As I ascended, the views became increasingly panoramic, and by the time I reached Løsta, I was rewarded with a vista that stretched out in every direction. From this vantage point, the Geirangerfjord looked like a toy landscape far below, with cruise ships appearing as tiny white specks on the water. The surrounding mountains rose majestically, their peaks often shrouded in mist. I spent a good hour at Løsta, simply soaking in the view and enjoying the solitude. It was the perfect place for some quiet reflection, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with nature.

After descending from Vesterasfjellet, I decided to drive towards Djupvatnet, a lake located further up in the mountains. The drive was scenic, with the landscape gradually changing from lush green hills to more rugged, rocky terrain. As I approached Djupvatnet, I was struck by its serene beauty. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, even in July, and its crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding landscape like a mirror. I parked the car and took a walk along the shoreline, enjoying the peace and quiet. There were a few other tourists around, but the atmosphere was still one of tranquility and solitude. I found a secluded spot on the shore and sat down to enjoy a picnic lunch, taking in the stunning views. It was a simple meal, but the setting made it feel like a feast.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to head back towards Geiranger village, but not before stopping for a late lunch at Restaurant Skageflå. This restaurant is known for its local ingredients and traditional Norwegian cuisine, and it didn't disappoint. I enjoyed a delicious meal of fish soup and fresh salad, savoring the flavors of the region. The restaurant also offered stunning views of the Geirangerfjord, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind after a busy day of exploring.

With the day drawing to a close, I made my way back to Geiranger village, but not before stopping at Geiranger Bryggeri for a well-deserved beer. This local brewery is known for its traditional brewing methods and its unique beers, and it was the perfect place to end the day. I sampled a few different brews, each with its own distinct flavor and character. The brewery had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the locals and learning about the brewing process.

For dinner, I ventured to Berserk Bar & Grill. The atmosphere was lively, and I decided on one of their famous burgers. The combination of great food and a friendly atmosphere made it a perfect way to cap off the day. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the service was excellent. It’s a popular spot, and for good reason. I made sure to try some local beer, a fitting end to a day immersed in the local culture.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, my final day in Geiranger will be spent exploring Geiranger Skysslag, Holebroa Waterfall and Hellesylt. I plan to grab breakfast at Låna Bistro before heading out for the day. I am also hoping to do a little shopping for souvenirs at Geiranger Tourist Information v/ Visit Geiranger AS before I leave.

As I sit here reflecting on the day, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible place. Geiranger is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left. The natural beauty, the friendly locals, and the sense of peace and solitude make it a truly special place. I’m already looking forward to my next adventure, wherever it may take me.

Tomorrow marks the end of my solo adventure in Geirangerfjord, but the memories and experiences I've gathered here will undoubtedly stay with me for a lifetime. This trip has been a wonderful reminder of the beauty and serenity that can be found in nature, and I'm eager to carry that sense of peace back with me to Dublin. While I'll miss the stunning landscapes and tranquil atmosphere of Geiranger, I'm also looking forward to reuniting with Aoife and sharing my stories with her. Until next time, Norway!
