Solo Adventure in the Majestic Geirangerfjord
Day 6: Swinging High and Hiking Deep: A Day of Geiranger's Thrills
Experience Geiranger's beauty with a fjord swing, waterfall hike, and historic farm visit. A solo adventure through Norway's wonders.
A Day of High Swings and Historic Hikes
Today was all about embracing the adventurous spirit of Geiranger. From swinging over the fjord to hiking up to a historic mountain farm, I immersed myself in the stunning landscapes and rich history of this Norwegian gem. It was a day of physical challenges, breathtaking views, and quiet reflection – exactly the kind of solo adventure I was hoping for.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Naustkroa Restaurant. Fuelled up with a traditional Norwegian breakfast, I was ready to tackle the day's itinerary. The restaurant was bustling with early risers, all eager to start their day exploring Geiranger. The friendly service and delicious food made it a perfect start.
First up: the Geiranger Schaukel, or the Geiranger Swing. I’d seen photos of this thing online, and I knew I had to experience it for myself. Finding the swing involved a bit of a hunt, wandering along a small path southwest of the Fjord Centre, but the anticipation only heightened the excitement. When I finally found it, I wasn't disappointed. The swing hangs precariously (but safely!) over the fjord, offering a unique and exhilarating perspective. As I swung out, the wind rushing past my face, I couldn't help but laugh. The views were simply incredible, the fjord stretching out before me, framed by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are the ones that push you slightly outside your comfort zone.
After the adrenaline rush of the swing, I decided to embark on the Fossevandring Geiranger, the waterfall hike. This turned out to be a fantastic way to experience the raw power and beauty of the Geiranger waterfalls. The hike took me alongside and even over the cascading waters, with stairs and pathways carved into the rock. The spray from the falls was refreshing, and the thunderous roar was both humbling and invigorating. It’s amazing that something so raw and untamed can be so easily accessible and enjoyed. I made sure to take my time, pausing to capture photos and simply soak in the moment. I even spotted a few rainbows dancing in the mist, adding a touch of magic to the experience.

For lunch, I had planned to eat at Restaurant Skageflå. However, I soon realised there must have been a misunderstanding, as the restaurant is not actually *at* Skageflå farm itself, but is located at Hotel Geiranger. Given my plan was to hike *to* Skageflå, it made little sense to hike away from it to have lunch! So I decided to be sensible and pack a lunch instead.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the hike to Skageflå. To get there, I took a fjord cruise from Geiranger to Skagehola, the starting point of the trail. The boat ride itself was a treat, offering stunning views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains. As we approached Skagehola, I could see the steep trail winding its way up the mountainside, and I knew I was in for a challenge. The hike to Skageflå is not for the faint of heart. It's a steep and demanding climb, with narrow paths and exposed sections. However, the views along the way are simply breathtaking. As I ascended, the fjord stretched out beneath me, the water shimmering in the sunlight. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the rushing of waterfalls and the occasional cry of a bird.

Skageflå itself is a remarkable place. This abandoned mountain farm clings precariously to the mountainside, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Farmers have occupied this spot since the Middle Ages and apparently it used to be one of the wealthiest farms in the area due to the lush pastures of the Skagadalen Valley. I spent some time exploring the farm buildings, imagining what life must have been like for the families who lived here, so isolated yet surrounded by such incredible beauty. It’s easy to understand why the Norwegian royal couple chose this very spot to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. I found a quiet spot to sit and enjoy my packed lunch, savouring the stunning views and the sense of accomplishment. The hike back down was just as challenging, but the knowledge that a cold beer awaited me at the end kept me motivated.
Back in Geiranger, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Berserk Bar & Grill. I’d heard good things about their burgers, and after a long day of hiking, I was definitely in the mood for some comfort food. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and I found a spot on the outdoor terrace with views of the fjord. The burger was indeed delicious, and the beer was cold and refreshing. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I stopped by Geiranger Bryggeri, the local brewery, for a nightcap. I sampled a couple of their beers, including the Vikingstøa Pale Ale, while chatting with some of the locals. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Geiranger Bryggeri seems to be popular, and several of their beers have received good reviews. It was interesting to try something local. I even sampled their Friaren Pilsner, just to be sure!

As I walked back to my guesthouse, the stars were beginning to appear in the sky. The fjord was quiet and still, and the mountains loomed large in the darkness. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place. Geiranger is truly a special destination, a place where natural beauty and human history come together in a unique and unforgettable way.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the fjord itself, taking a closer look at the Geirangerfjorden verdsarv (World Heritage Site) and the various waterfalls. I’m also hoping to visit Geiranger Sjokolade Fjordnær to sample some local chocolates. Until then, I’ll rest up and dream of swinging high above the fjord.
I'm also thinking of Aoife, and how much she would have loved this trip, and the various historical aspects of the area. I'm sure she would have found a local genealogy expert to try and understand the history of the area, and the people that lived here. Perhaps next time, I'll convince her to come along with me. It would be wonderful to share these experiences with her.
I must remember to buy a portable phone charger, I am constantly running out of battery taking photos! I also regret not bringing my binoculars, as they would have been very useful for spotting wildlife while hiking.
I feel like I am really getting used to solo travel, and I am enjoying the freedom that it brings. I am able to do what I want, when I want, and I am not beholden to anyone else's schedule. It is a very liberating experience, and I am looking forward to the rest of my trip. And I am looking forward to telling Aoife all about it when I get home. I know she will be eager to hear all about my adventures, and I can't wait to share my experiences with her.
I know that when I return to Dublin, Liam will be eager to hear all about my adventures as well. He is always curious about the places I visit, and he loves to see the photos I take. I'm sure he'll be especially interested in the Geiranger Schaukel, as he is always up for a thrill. I'll have to make sure to bring him back a souvenir from Geiranger Sjokolade Fjordnær, as he has a sweet tooth just like his mother. It's moments like these that make me appreciate my family and the bond we share. Even when I'm traveling solo, I always feel connected to them, and I know they're always there for me, no matter what.
