A Solo Adventure in the Majestic Serra da Estrela
Day 13: Farewell, Serra da Estrela: Reflecting on a Solo Journey
A final day of reflection in Serra da Estrela, cherishing landscapes, local flavors, and solitude on a transformative solo adventure.
A Fond Farewell
As my solo journey through the Serra da Estrela comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and breathtaking landscapes that have filled the past thirteen days. This final day was a culmination of exploration, introspection, and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of Portugal's mountainous heartland. It's amazing how quickly time flies when you're immersed in such a captivating environment.
My last day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante O Olival in Manteigas. I savored every bite, knowing it would be my last taste of traditional Serra da Estrela cuisine for a while. The restaurant offered a unique gastronomic experience, and I particularly enjoyed the artistic presentation of the dishes, paired with the family's own wine. The warm and welcoming atmosphere made it a perfect start to the day.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore Poço do Funil, a hidden gem nestled in the scenic region of Cortes do Meio. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the mountains. When I arrived, I was immediately struck by the natural beauty of the area. Poço do Funil is a natural swimming pool with crystal-clear waters, framed by dramatic rock formations and lush greenery. Despite the cooler November air, I couldn't resist dipping my toes in the refreshing water. I can only imagine how idyllic this spot would be for a summer swim!

It is not the destination that matters, but the journey.
After spending some time at Poço do Funil, soaking in the peaceful ambiance, I made my way to Miradouro do Sanatório. Located on the eastern slope of the Serra da Estrela, at an altitude of approximately 1300 meters, this viewpoint offers a sweeping panorama of the surrounding region. The view stretched across the southern half of the Guarda district, the northern parts of the Castelo Branco district, and even into the western regions of Salamanca and Cáceres in Spain. The sheer vastness of the landscape was awe-inspiring, and I spent a good hour simply taking it all in. It was a perfect spot for quiet contemplation, a moment to reflect on the journey and the experiences I've had.

For lunch, I ventured to Taberna A Laranjinha, a restaurant that I had read about and was keen to experience. Tucked away in a typical granite house in the historic center of Covilhã, this taberna is known for its traditional petiscos (tapas). The restaurant is even listed in the Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand selection. I sampled a variety of dishes, including the bombons de alheira (sausage bites) and the pastel da Covilhã (a meat-filled pastry). The food was delicious, and the friendly service added to the overall charm of the place.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some souvenir shopping at A Loja do Brás. I wanted to find something special to remind me of my time in the Serra da Estrela, a tangible memento of the landscapes and experiences that had captivated me. The shop had a variety of local products, from handcrafted items to regional delicacies. I ended up buying a small, hand-painted ceramic tile depicting the Serra da Estrela, a perfect keepsake to display in my home in Toronto.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to a final dinner at O Vicente in Loriga. This cozy restaurant, completely renovated, offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The chef prides himself on using fresh, local ingredients to create traditional Serra da Estrela dishes. I savored every bite of my meal, accompanied by a glass of regional wine. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration and reflection.
