Chasing Mountain Dreams
Today was about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Serra da Estrela. After several days of exploring the charming villages and valleys, I decided to dedicate a day to the heights, to those viewpoints that promise panoramic vistas and a sense of serene solitude. I was eager to see what the mountain had in store for me.
My day started, as it often does, with a hearty breakfast at Casa do Clube in Manteigas. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the cozy space. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of toast with local cheese and a strong black coffee. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The owner was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the region and offering tips for my hike. It's these small interactions that make solo travel so rewarding; you connect with people on a deeper level, learning about their lives and the places they call home.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Cântaro Raso, one of the most iconic spots in Serra da Estrela. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads carving through the landscape, each turn revealing a new, breathtaking view. The autumn colors were still clinging to the trees, creating a vibrant tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows against the backdrop of the stark, granite peaks.

The hike to Cântaro Raso was invigorating. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. As I ascended, the landscape transformed, becoming more rugged and dramatic. The trail was well-marked, but there were moments where I had to navigate rocky terrain, which added a sense of adventure to the journey. I thought about Olivia and how much she would have loved this hike. I made a mental note to bring her here someday; I know she'd appreciate the tranquility and the stunning views as much as I do.
Reaching Cântaro Raso was an awe-inspiring experience. The vastness of the landscape stretched out before me, a panorama of rolling hills, deep valleys, and distant peaks. The wind whipped around me, carrying the sounds of the mountain, a symphony of nature's orchestra. I spent a long time simply sitting there, soaking in the view, feeling a sense of profound peace and connection to the earth. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why I love to travel, to explore, to discover these hidden corners of the world.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that take you to the highest points, both literally and figuratively.
After my time at Cântaro Raso, I decided to visit Miradouro de Cabeço de Alfatema. The viewpoint offered a different perspective of Serra da Estrela. From here, I could see the sprawling valleys and the quaint villages nestled within them. The late afternoon light cast long shadows across the landscape, creating a magical, almost surreal atmosphere. The air was still crisp, but the wind had died down, leaving a sense of calm and tranquility. I took several photographs, trying to capture the beauty of the scene, but I knew that no image could truly do it justice. It was a moment that had to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

Before heading back to Manteigas, I stopped by Loja Tradicional, a local shop that caught my eye earlier in the day. I wanted to pick up some souvenirs for Olivia and perhaps a little something for myself. The shop was filled with an array of local products, from handmade woolen blankets to artisanal cheeses and cured meats. I ended up buying a beautiful, hand-knitted scarf for Olivia and a selection of local cheeses to enjoy later. I love supporting local businesses; it's a way of giving back to the community and ensuring that these traditional crafts and products continue to thrive.

As evening approached, I made my way to Taberna Solar do Monte for dinner. The restaurant was warm and inviting, with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home. I ordered a traditional Portuguese dish of roasted lamb with potatoes and vegetables. The lamb was tender and flavorful, the potatoes perfectly roasted, and the vegetables fresh and vibrant. It was a hearty and satisfying meal, the perfect way to end a day of hiking and exploring. The staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel like a regular customer. I chatted with them about my travels, sharing stories and experiences. It's these connections that make traveling solo so special; you meet people from all walks of life, learning about their cultures and perspectives.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to stop for a nightcap at a local bar. I wanted to soak in the atmosphere and reflect on the day's adventures. I ordered a glass of local wine and sat at the bar, listening to the chatter of the locals. It was a lively and welcoming atmosphere. I felt a sense of belonging, of being part of something bigger than myself. As I sipped my wine, I thought about how fortunate I am to be able to travel and explore these beautiful places. I thought about Olivia and how much I miss her. I made a promise to myself to bring her here someday, to share these experiences with her.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Serra da Estrela, with visits to Miradouro Nave de Santo Antonio and the Circos Glaciários. I'm also looking forward to trying out a new restaurant, Quinta do Sangrinhal, for dinner. And perhaps, if the mood strikes, I'll check out Skyline, a local bar, for a nightcap. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, to prepare for another day of adventure in this magical place.
Today was a reminder of the simple joys of travel: the beauty of nature, the warmth of human connection, and the joy of discovery.
