Finding Serenity and Awe in Guatapé

Today was a day of deep connection – with nature, with spirit, and with the breathtaking beauty of Colombia. Guatapé continues to surprise and enchant me, offering experiences that resonate far beyond the typical tourist trail. Olivia and I embraced a day filled with natural wonders and cultural immersion, a true testament to the magic of this region.

Our morning started with a hearty Colombian breakfast at Guatacrep'. This cozy spot was the perfect place to fuel up for the day's adventures. Olivia and I enjoyed arepas and strong Colombian coffee, setting the stage for what promised to be an unforgettable day. It’s amazing how a simple breakfast can feel so special when you’re sharing it in a new place, soaking in the local atmosphere.

Our first destination was the Reserva Natural Cañón del Río Claro. The journey itself was an experience, winding through lush landscapes that hinted at the natural beauty to come. As an urban planner, I am always intrigued by how communities interact with their environment, and this reserve is a shining example of conservation done right.

Upon arrival, we were immediately enveloped by the sounds of the rainforest – the calls of exotic birds, the rustling of leaves, and the gentle flow of the Río Claro. The reserve is a sanctuary for hundreds of species of birds and thousands of plant species. We hiked through the humid, warm environment, marveling at the diverse flora and fauna. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and vibrant blossoms. We chose to take a guided tour, and I’m so glad we did. Our guide shared fascinating insights into the local ecosystem and the reserve's commitment to preserving it.

The highlight of the Río Claro was undoubtedly the marble beach. The smooth, white stones lining the riverbank created a surreal and beautiful landscape. We took a refreshing dip in the cool, clear water, feeling completely rejuvenated by the natural surroundings. Olivia, ever the adventurous one, even explored a small cave, emerging with a huge smile and tales of hidden wonders. It was a moment of pure joy, connecting with nature in its rawest form.

To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.

After our morning immersed in nature, we sought a different kind of immersion – a spiritual one. We headed to a local Temazcal for an afternoon of reflection and purification. I had heard about Temazcal ceremonies before, but never had the opportunity to participate. Olivia, always open to new experiences, was just as eager as I was.

The Temazcal itself was a small, dome-shaped structure, representing the womb of Mother Earth. The ceremony began with a guided meditation, led by a local shaman. We sat in darkness as heated stones were brought into the center of the structure, filling the air with intense heat and the scent of medicinal herbs. The shaman chanted and prayed, guiding us through a journey of self-reflection and release.

The heat was intense, but it was a cleansing heat, both physically and emotionally. I found myself confronting long-held anxieties and fears, allowing them to surface and dissipate in the steam. Olivia held my hand, offering silent support and strength. By the end of the ceremony, I felt a profound sense of peace and renewal. It was an experience that stripped away the layers of daily stress, leaving me feeling grounded and connected.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to Mirador Guatapé Oriente. After the intensity of the Temazcal, we were seeking a place to simply breathe and take in the vastness of the landscape. The mirador, perched high above the rolling hills and sparkling lakes, offered exactly that.

The view was simply breathtaking. The sprawling panorama of the Guatapé region unfolded before us, a tapestry of green hills, shimmering waters, and quaint villages. We watched as the sun painted the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple, casting a magical glow over the landscape. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and introspection.

Before heading back to our cozy accommodation, we stopped at ARTE A MANO, a local shop known for its unique handcrafted treasures. As someone who appreciates craftsmanship and supports local artisans, I was immediately drawn to the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the items on display. We picked up a few small souvenirs – a hand-painted ceramic bowl for Olivia and a small wooden carving for myself – as reminders of our time in Guatapé.

For dinner, we chose La Fogata, a restaurant renowned for its grilled specialties. The aroma of sizzling meats filled the air as we approached, making our mouths water in anticipation. I opted for the grilled steak, cooked to perfection and served with traditional Colombian sides. Olivia chose the grilled fish, equally delicious and satisfying. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the flavors of Colombia.

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.”

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our experiences over a nightcap. We had ventured into the heart of nature at Río Claro, embraced spiritual renewal at the Temazcal, and soaked in panoramic views from Mirador Guatapé Oriente. Each experience was unique, yet they all contributed to a deeper understanding and appreciation of this remarkable region. I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore such a diverse and enriching destination.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, our last day in Guatapé, we plan to visit Plaza Bicentenario, Letrero GUATAPE, and Mirador El Águila. We'll also be enjoying meals at Venezuela Mia, El castillo Guatape, and Restaunte La Parilla. To cap off our trip, we'll be visiting La Barra Guatapé for a final taste of the local nightlife. I am particularly excited to explore Plaza Bicentenario, a historical landmark that promises to offer insights into the region's rich heritage.

I am also looking forward to Mirador El Águila, another viewpoint that promises stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape. Each of these destinations offers a unique perspective on the beauty and culture of Guatapé. I am eager to immerse myself in these experiences, capturing the essence of this vibrant town before we bid it farewell.

As our time in Guatapé nears its end, I am filled with a sense of both satisfaction and anticipation. This trip has been a remarkable journey of discovery, filled with unforgettable moments and cherished memories. I am eager to share our final day of adventures with you, as we continue to explore the hidden gems and cultural treasures of this enchanting destination.
