Cultural Family Adventure in Historic Saint-Louis, Senegal
Day 4: Capturing Saint-Louis: A Day of Photography and Colonial Echoes
Exploring Saint-Louis through its photographic museum and historic church, a day of cultural immersion and culinary delights with family.
A Lens on History
Today in Saint-Louis was a beautiful blend of art, history, and delightful Senegalese flavors. Francisca, Nilton and I immersed ourselves in the city's rich culture, capturing moments and memories that I know we’ll cherish for years to come. It felt particularly special, given my own background and love for history, to share this experience with my family.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ndiaye Restauranty. It was a bustling spot, full of locals starting their day. I ordered a traditional Senegalese breakfast of Thiéboudienne, a flavorful rice dish with fish and vegetables. Francisca opted for a simpler omelet, while Nilton, ever the adventurous one, tried a bit of everything. The vibrant atmosphere and delicious food set the perfect tone for our explorations.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we made our way to the Musée de la Photographie de Saint-Louis. This museum, or rather, a collection of museums scattered around the city, is a true gem. Founded by Amadou Diaw, it's more than just a gallery; it's a cultural hub that showcases the evolution of photography in Senegal and beyond. Each location, or *kër* (house in Wolof), offers a unique perspective on the history and art of photography. We started at the Villa Mupho, the heart of the museum, where we purchased our tickets, which granted us access to all the locations. It felt like embarking on a treasure hunt through the city's visual legacy.

As a tour guide in Lisbon, I'm used to sharing stories through historical buildings and monuments. Here, the photographs themselves were the storytellers, revealing glimpses of the past and present. Nilton was particularly fascinated by the old cameras and equipment on display at Kër Repentigny, while Francisca was drawn to the portraits of local figures at Kër Messaoud. For me, it was the way the museum was woven into the fabric of the city that struck me most. It wasn't just a place to look at art; it was an invitation to engage with the city's history and culture in a deeply personal way.
Photography, at its best, captures not just a moment in time, but the soul of a place and its people.
Leaving the museum, we strolled through the streets of Saint-Louis, soaking in the atmosphere. The colonial architecture, with its pastel-colored buildings and wrought-iron balconies, transported us back in time. I imagined what life must have been like here during the French colonial era, a period of both progress and oppression. It's a complex history, one that I try to understand and share with others through my work in Lisbon, highlighting the African influences that have shaped the city.
Our next stop was L’église Saint-Louis-en-l’île, a beautiful church that stands as a testament to the city's colonial past. Construction of the church began in 1664, based on plans by François Le Vau, and was completed in 1726. Its architecture, a blend of French Baroque style, reminded me of some of the churches we have back in Portugal. Inside, the church was serene and peaceful, a welcome respite from the bustling city outside. The stained glass windows cast colorful patterns on the walls, and the air was filled with the scent of incense. We lit a candle for my mother, who always appreciated the beauty and tranquility of churches.

After our visit to the church, we were ready for lunch. We chose Restaurant Afia, a local spot known for its delicious seafood. I ordered the Yassa, a flavorful chicken dish marinated in lemon and onions, while Francisca had the grilled fish. Nilton, of course, opted for the fish and chips. The food was simple but delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming.

In the late afternoon, we decided to indulge in a little treat at Coconut cafe. The cafe was buzzing with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the cool drinks and sweet treats. I ordered a bissap juice, a refreshing drink made from hibiscus flowers, while Francisca had a gazelle horn pastry. Nilton chose an ice cream, which he promptly devoured.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Keur Dada for dinner. This restaurant, located in a charming building on the island, offered a mix of Senegalese and international cuisine. We sat on the terrace, overlooking the Senegal River, and enjoyed the cool evening breeze. I ordered the Thiof, a traditional fish stew, while Francisca had the steak frites. Nilton, again, chose the fish and chips. The food was excellent, and the ambiance was perfect.

As we walked back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had explored the city's art, history, and culture, and we had tasted its delicious cuisine. But more importantly, we had spent quality time together as a family, creating memories that would last a lifetime. I felt grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with Francisca and Nilton, and I looked forward to what tomorrow would bring.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Tour of the egg and the Langue de Barbarie National Park. I'm particularly excited about the latter, as I've always been fascinated by birdwatching. I've also made a mental note to pick up a power adapter, as I seem to have forgotten it, and we could use it to charge our devices.
As I sit here now, writing this entry, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Saint-Louis is a city that has captured my heart, and I'm eager to continue exploring its hidden corners and uncovering its untold stories. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine, creating a unique tapestry of culture and history. A place where every corner holds a story, and every photograph captures a piece of its soul.
Before I turn in for the night, I can't help but think about how much Nilton is enjoying this trip. Seeing the world through his eyes, his endless curiosity and excitement, reminds me of the simple joys of travel. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones we share with those we love. And as I drift off to sleep, I know that tomorrow will bring even more adventures and discoveries in this enchanting city.
