Exploring the Rich History of Crete with Family
Day 3: Echoes of Faith and Freedom: A Day Among Monks and Ancient Echoes in Crete
Discover Crete's spiritual heart at Arkadi Monastery and uncover the ancient secrets of Eleutherna with Eleni and her family.
A Journey Through Time and Spirit
Today, our Cretan adventure took us on a poignant journey through history and spirituality. We explored places where echoes of the past resonate deeply, and where the spirit of resilience and faith are palpable. It was a day of reflection, learning, and connection, leaving us with a profound appreciation for Crete's rich heritage.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Myrtios Traditional Taverna. The warm hospitality and traditional Cretan flavors were the perfect start to a day of exploration. Hans-Peter particularly enjoyed the *antikristo* meat, cooked in a way that he learned dates back to ancient Greece. Sophia, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by trying (and enjoying!) the local olives. Fuelled and ready, we set off for Arkadi Monastery.
Discover the serene beauty and historical significance of Arkadi Monastery, a must-visit site in Crete for culture and history enthusiasts.
The drive to Arkadi was stunning, winding through the rugged Cretan landscape. As we approached the monastery, its imposing walls rising from the plateau, I felt a sense of anticipation. I had read so much about its historical significance, particularly its role in the Cretan resistance against Ottoman rule, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. As a librarian specializing in ancient Greek history, I'm always drawn to places where history feels alive.
The Arkadi Monastery is more than just a beautiful building; it's a symbol of Cretan identity and resilience. The architecture itself is a fascinating blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped Crete over the centuries. But it was the story of the monastery's role in the 1866 revolt that truly captivated me. In November of that year, hundreds of Cretan men, women, and children sought refuge within its walls during the uprising against Ottoman rule. When Turkish forces stormed the monastery, the besieged, led by their abbot, chose to detonate gunpowder, sacrificing themselves rather than surrender. It was a desperate act of defiance that ignited a flame of resistance throughout Greece and captured the attention of the world.
The sacrifice at Arkadi is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the unwavering pursuit of freedom.
Walking through the monastery, I could almost hear the echoes of the past – the prayers, the cries, the sounds of battle. The small museum within the complex houses a collection of artifacts related to the revolt, including icons, vestments, and weapons. Seeing these items up close brought the story to life in a powerful way. Sophia was particularly moved by a display of children's clothing from that era, a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict. Hans-Peter and I tried to explain to Sophia the importance of the events that took place here, the courage and the conviction that drove these people to make such a sacrifice.
The experience at Arkadi was deeply moving, a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that have shaped the island's identity. Leaving the monastery, I felt a sense of gratitude for the peace and freedom we enjoy today, and a renewed appreciation for the importance of preserving historical memory.
From Arkadi, we journeyed further back in time to Ancient Eleutherna, an archaeological site that reveals Crete's history stretching back to the Dark Ages. The site is located on a narrow spur of Mount Ida, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The air was crisp and carried the scent of wild herbs, a familiar and comforting aroma that reminded me of my childhood in Livadeia.

Ancient Eleutherna was once a powerful city-state, strategically located between Knossos and the western coast. Excavations have revealed a wealth of information about the city's development, from its early Dorian settlement to its flourishing in Hellenistic and Roman times. The ongoing work of archaeologists continues to unearth new discoveries, shedding light on the lives of its ancient inhabitants.
We explored the acropolis, where remnants of a tower still stand atop a long, narrow ridge. The uneven path led us down to vast Roman cisterns carved into the hills, a testament to the ingenuity of ancient engineers. Sophia, with her boundless energy, was particularly fascinated by the cisterns, imagining them filled with water and bustling with activity.
One of the most significant finds at Eleutherna is the necropolis of Orthi Petra, a cemetery dating back to the 9th to 6th centuries BC. The site has yielded evidence of various burial practices, including cremations and inhumations, as well as a rich collection of grave goods. These artifacts provide invaluable insights into the social structure, beliefs, and trade networks of Eleutherna during this period. The Museum of Ancient Eleutherna, inaugurated in 2016, houses many of these treasures, offering visitors a chance to delve deeper into the city's past. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to visit the museum today, but I've added it to our list for a future visit.
After a morning steeped in history and culture, our appetites were calling. We decided to have lunch at Lemonokipos Restaurant in Rethymno. The restaurant is known for its charming setting, nestled under a canopy of lemon trees, and its delicious Cretan and Greek cuisine. The vegan options were plentiful, which was a delightful surprise. I savored a selection of vegan mezze, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a traditional moussaka. Sophia, of course, opted for the *souvlaki*, which she declared was the best she'd ever had.

Before dinner, we stopped by Irida Family Workshop. I was hoping to find a small replica of a Minoan artifact to bring home as a souvenir. The shop, run by a local family, offered a wide array of handcrafted items, from museum replicas to ceramics and jewelry. I chose a beautiful clay figurine of a Minoan goddess, a reminder of Crete's ancient past. Sophia picked out a small, hand-painted owl, a symbol of wisdom and knowledge.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to To Pigadi Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant, housed in a 16th-century Venetian building, is known for its traditional Cretan dishes and its beautiful courtyard setting. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was simply divine. We shared a selection of local cheeses and mezze, savoring the flavors of Crete. The evening was filled with laughter, good food, and a sense of contentment.
