Echoes of the Minoans and the Caves of Matala
Today's adventure took us back in time, tracing the footsteps of Minoans and hippies alike. Crete continues to surprise me with its layered history and the way it seamlessly blends ancient wonders with natural beauty. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and a deeper connection with the island's soul.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Georgia's Traditional Taverna. The reviews I had read online praised their traditional Cretan dishes, and I was eager to start the day with an authentic taste of the island. The taverna was cozy and welcoming, and we enjoyed some giant beans and spinach pies. Hans-Peter particularly enjoyed the lamb casserole. After breakfast, we set off towards our first destination: the Minoan Palace of Phaistos.
Explore the ancient wonders of the Minoan Palace of Phaistos, a historical landmark in Crete that showcases the grandeur of Minoan civilization.
As we drove, the landscape unfolded before us, revealing the raw beauty of Crete in January. The rolling hills were dotted with olive groves, and the air was crisp and clean. The weather in Crete this time of year is quite mild, with average daytime highs around 15 degrees Celsius, but today we were lucky and it was closer to 16 degrees. I made sure Sophia had a light jacket, remembering my oversight in not packing one for myself! The drive itself was a journey, and I found myself reflecting on the island's history and the stories it held.
Arriving at Phaistos, I was immediately struck by the palace's commanding presence. Perched atop a hill, it offered panoramic views of the Messara plain and the Psiloritis mountain range. As a librarian specializing in ancient Greek history, I've spent countless hours reading about the Minoans, but standing on the grounds of one of their palaces was an entirely different experience. I could almost hear the echoes of the past, the whispers of kings and queens, and the bustling activity of a thriving civilization.
To walk through these ruins is to connect with the very essence of human history, to feel the pulse of a civilization that shaped our world.
The Palace of Phaistos, second in size only to Knossos, is less crowded, offering a more intimate experience. The site is undergoing improvements to protect the architectural remains and improve accessibility, which is wonderful news. We explored the central court, the royal apartments, and the workshops, imagining what life must have been like during the palace's heyday. The intricate stonework and the sophisticated drainage systems were a testament to the Minoans' advanced engineering skills. Sophia was fascinated by the ruins, asking questions about the people who once lived there and their way of life.
I was particularly moved by the workshops in the north wing. It's fascinating to imagine the artisans at work, creating pottery and other goods that were traded throughout the Mediterranean. The horseshoe-shaped furnace in the East Court is a particularly striking feature, a reminder of the Minoans' skill in metallurgy.
After immersing ourselves in the history of Phaistos, we drove towards the coast to Matala Beach.

The drive was short, only about 15 minutes, and the landscape changed dramatically as we approached the sea. Matala is famous for its caves carved into the cliffs, which were once used as burial places and later became a haven for hippies in the 1960s and 70s. The caves have been dated back to the Neolithic period. As we walked along the beach, I could feel the echoes of a different era, a time of peace, love, and freedom.
Even in January, Matala Beach had a certain charm. The weather was mild, and the sea was a beautiful shade of blue. Although it wasn't warm enough to swim, we enjoyed walking along the shore and exploring the caves. Sophia was particularly intrigued by the stories of the hippies who once lived there, and I tried to explain to her the cultural significance of that era.
We had lunch at Marilena Restaurant, which offered a delightful view of the beach.

The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the food was delicious. We enjoyed some fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes, savoring the flavors of the Mediterranean. The reviews I read before praised the restaurant's fresh produce, and I could certainly taste the difference. As we ate, we watched the waves crashing against the shore, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful place.
After lunch, we took some time to explore the village of Matala. We visited Alexander Natural shop and souvenirs, where we found some unique Cretan crafts to take home as souvenirs.

I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic plate with a Minoan design, a reminder of our visit to Phaistos. Sophia chose a colorful bracelet made of natural stones, a memento of her time at Matala Beach. I always try to find souvenirs that are locally made and reflect the culture of the place we're visiting. It's a way to support local artisans and keep the memories of our travels alive.
As the day drew to a close, we drove back to our guesthouse, feeling tired but content. We had dinner at Pelagos Sea Side Restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious meal with a stunning view of the sea.

The staff was attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxing. The restaurant is well-sheltered, which was great considering the blustery winds. I had the Beef Cheeks and Onion Stew, while Hans-Peter enjoyed the Cretan Lamb Kleftiko. Sophia, of course, opted for pasta.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore Rethymnon, a city known for its Venetian architecture and rich history. We'll visit the Fortezza, a 16th-century fortress, and stroll through the Rethymnon Municipal Garden. I'm also hoping to find some time to relax and soak up the atmosphere of this charming city. Perhaps we'll even stop by Rudis Bar for a drink in the evening.
Today was a reminder of the power of travel to connect us with the past and with each other. As we continue our journey through Crete, I'm excited to see what other wonders await us. I feel so privileged to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes Crete a truly special place, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore it with Hans-Peter and Sophia.
The weather in Crete in January can be unpredictable, so it's important to be prepared for anything. We packed layers of clothing, including sweaters, jackets, and raincoats. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as there's a lot of walking involved in exploring the archaeological sites and villages. And of course, don't forget your camera to capture all the beautiful scenery!
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the enduring power of the human spirit. The Minoans, despite facing earthquakes and other natural disasters, created a vibrant and sophisticated civilization. The hippies, seeking freedom and peace, found refuge in the caves of Matala. And we, as travelers, continue to seek out new experiences and connections, drawn to the beauty and mystery of the world around us. It's a reminder that even in the midst of challenges, there is always hope, creativity, and the possibility of new beginnings.
