Aymavilles Awakening
Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Valle d'Aosta, a day of exploring historical landmarks and the serene beauty of alpine flora. Hans-Peter and I set out with our cameras, eager to capture the essence of this enchanting region. Little did we know, this day would be a tapestry woven with threads of history, nature, and local charm.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Chez Julie in Aosta. It was a quaint little place, the kind where the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee fills the air. I savored a croissant while Hans-Peter enjoyed a slice of local cheese, fueling up for our day of exploration. It reminded me of our favorite bakery back in Berlin, but with a distinctly Italian flair. It's the small details like these that make traveling so rewarding.

Aymavilles Castle: A Journey Through Time
Our first destination was the Castello di Aymavilles. As we approached, the castle stood majestically on a promontory, its unique architecture blending medieval strength with baroque elegance. The cylindrical towers and white façades created a striking silhouette against the clear blue sky.

The castle's history is as captivating as its appearance. Originally built in the 13th century, it has been transformed over the centuries, most notably by the Challant family. The blend of architectural styles tells a story of changing tastes and needs, a visual representation of the passage of time.
We wandered through the castle grounds, imagining the lives of those who once walked these halls. The views of the surrounding valley were breathtaking, a reminder of the strategic importance of this location throughout history. Although the interior was closed for visits, the exterior alone was worth the trip. Hans-Peter, ever the enthusiast, took countless photographs, capturing every angle and detail of this historical gem. I made a mental note to delve deeper into the history of the Challant family; their influence on this region is clearly profound.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.
Alpine Heights at Saussurea Botanical Garden
Next on our itinerary was the Saussurea Alpine Botanical Garden, a short drive from Aymavilles. As we ascended, the landscape transformed, the air becoming crisper and cooler. The garden, perched at 2,173 meters above sea level, is the highest alpine botanical garden in Europe.

The garden is named after Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, a Genevan scientist who made the first known ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786. The name is fitting, as the garden is a testament to the beauty and resilience of alpine flora. As we wandered through the meticulously landscaped paths, we were greeted by a vibrant array of alpine plants, many of which are native to the region. The Saussurea Alpine Botanical Garden was opened in 1987 and has around 800 species.
The garden is divided into sections, each showcasing different alpine environments. There were rockeries, alpine pastures, and even wetland areas, each teeming with unique plant life. Informative signs provided insights into the ecological significance of each species, adding an educational layer to our visit.
Hans-Peter and I were particularly captivated by the panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif. The snow-capped peaks provided a stunning backdrop to the colorful flora, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility, a connection to nature that is often lost in the hustle and bustle of city life. The sun was pleasantly warm, and a light breeze made the temperature ideal for walking and exploring.
Lunch at Stefenelli Desk: A Culinary Delight
By lunchtime, our appetites were calling, so we headed to Stefenelli Desk in Aosta. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and we were eager to experience its acclaimed cuisine. The restaurant itself is located in the historic center of Aosta, adding to its charm.
